Russia was in demographic decline long before the war in Ukraine. Now it’s in free fall.
Since 2022, hundreds of thousands of Russians have died or suffered critical injuries in Ukraine. The result: According to one demographer, Russians may have had fewer children from January to March 2025 than in any three-month period over the past 200 years. As of 2023, the country’s fertility rate—1.4 births per woman—lies well below replacement level and amounts to a roughly 20 percent drop compared with 2015. In some regions, births fell that much in just 12 months. Last year, deaths outpaced births by more than half a million.

To me it’s sad for the Russian people they and their country have much to offer the world.they possess all the nessary ingredients to succeed and thrive with the exception of that murderous malignant cancer of a leader putin.how I wish they could join the world and thrive without being criminal aggressors.i know I’m naive but hope springs eternal.

Agreed. Being born Russian is a raw deal. In all it's existence (roughly 1100 years) it has only experienced democracy for 9 years (in the 90's under Yeltsin).

Who knows what happens when the present dictator is gone. As you say, one can only hope.

Same demographic free fall happening in Europe and Japan as well. All well below the "replacement rate" of 2. It's not only a Russian problem. Chinas former 1 child policy has come to haunt them.

But Africa is taking up the slack: They are reproducing like rabbits.

 

I find the political/economical/sociological/military "free fall" of Europe more worriesome.

Since the early 1990s, Russia has decided to follow the path of the West. Since 1993, according to the Russian constitution, the most important thing is human rights and not the rights of society. Just like in Western countries. Therefore, a woman's right to give birth to 1 child only for herself had become more important than the right of society to get 2-3 children from each woman in order to survive.
The same situation is in all Western countries that are trying to clumsily cover up the demographic catastrophe by importing migrants from Muslim countries. Muhammad's wife gives birth to 6 children precisely because her husband doesn't give a damn about human rights.
The worst situation in the world is in South Korea, where we can see the world`s lowest birth rate per woman - 0.8 children! In North Korea, everything is fine - 2 children per woman. All because Kim doesn't give a damn about such harmful Western inventions as Human Rights.

Only because the western world keep sending money and food enough keep it happen.

Increased population but no increase in productivity or food production.

Unfortunately, smart people are sometimes very stubborn in their delusions. It is high time for Western society to abandon the harmful idea of the supremacy of Human Rights. Immediately after that, the demographic situation will become normal.
Also, abandoning harmful western ideas will have a positive effect on relations with such world leaders as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un, who have a different view of rights and freedoms.

It's happening all over the developed world.  Either people can't afford kids or they don't want them for whatever reason.  Sooner or later, that's not good. 

 

As for Russia?  Kill enough young men in a war and the problem is obvious.  But from what I see here in Wongamat Beach, which always seems to have a lot of Russians on vacation, they like kids.  Most of the women seem to have kids and everyone is having a good time.  

Ummmmm, all countries in the West have this problem. China too. South Korea too. Japan too. All in Europe too.

 

Women are just refusing to have children.

No. On average, they give birth to 1 child in Western countries.

Why should a woman give birth to more than one child? She gave birth to one for herself and is quite happy. The second and third child must be born for society - which is half made up of men who do not have the ability to give birth. The concept of the supremacy of human rights leads to the fact that the demands of society become secondary and women give birth to one child as they want.

No, it's a total and utter steaming pile of dog caca.

 

You'll find many women do not even want one child. The reason has nothing to do with human rights. It's because women only DATE UP. This means that they only procreate with men who can give them a better lifestyle than they themselves have. And most women today have a lifestyle equal or better to the average male. So there is absolutely no incentive for these women to enter into a relationship, let alone have children with a man they do not consider high value.

 

This, my dear zmisha, is the real reason women are not having children. A relationship only makes sense if you get something which you do not have out of it. But most women have the same or more than most men now.

Everyone is having a good time? Judging by the facial expressions of most Russians I encounter that looks to be the very opposite of what they're having.

I don't know who you encounter.  I think I see a lot of people here on vacation, and a tropical beach probably beats Siberia or some other freezing place in the middle of the winter. They seem happy and relaxed to me.  If some of them don't seem too friendly when they're out and about, maybe that's a cultural thing?  

But by supressing the gays Russia increases the amount of hetreosexuals so they get a straight boost in children to offset those lost in wars. It's swingers and roundabouts in Putinland.

Back around the year 2000, I had a girlfriend from Japan, and that was her philosophy.  She "liked kids," but she didn't want to be a mother. 

 

And I'm pretty sure that today, she's a childless old lady wishing she could go back and have a real life with a family.

That's right, once women miss the boat, they bitterly regret it.

 

Too late then..

 

Ultimately the reason is that women marry "UP" only, so they'd need a man who substantially improves their lives. And most men today will not fit that criterion, so women choose not to marry and not to have children. Women, and men, only enter into relationships if they want to get something from the other which they don't have. But most women have more than men now.
