A Filipino man has been arrested in Bangkok following a series of deceptive stays at luxury hotels, where he incurred damages amounting to hundreds of thousands of baht by skipping out on his bills.

 

Major General Prasart Khemmaprasit of the Immigration Division 1, along with senior immigration officers, responded to complaints from several five-star hotels in Bangkok about a Filipino man's fraudulent activities. The man, known for his cunning ploys, repeatedly managed to stay without paying for accommodation or meals by tricking hotel staff.

 

The incidents date back to December 2024, when a manager of a renowned five-star hotel by the Chao Phraya River filed a complaint about the man, who booked hotel rooms via a popular online platform.

 

He would provide credit card details, which were only charged upon physical card presentation at the hotel. Claiming that his father, who was arriving later, would settle the bill, he manipulated the hotel's service standards to gain free accommodation.

 

His scheme involved reserving luxurious stays and limo services from the airport, stating he was travelling with his father. However, the investigation revealed he was not entering Thailand from abroad but was instead residing locally. He would feign arrival via public transport to collect the limousine, effectively deceiving hotel staff.

 

While staying, he'd indulge heavily in room service, even inviting friends for gatherings, accumulating significant costs on the hotel's account. On the supposed day of his father's arrival, neither the father nor the man was found, leading hotels to file police reports.

 

Following reports of similar incidents at other hotels, officers identified the suspect as not a tourist but a university student in Rangsit. Using this information, police obtained a warrant for his arrest.

 

The Immigration Division arrested 26-year-old "Leonardo Hernandez" (a pseudonym), based on witness accounts and surveillance, as he returned to his residence near the university. Convicted of fraud, he now faces legal proceedings for deceitfully obtaining stays and services under false pretenses.

Didn't they check the details on the CC were valid, and could therefore be charged without the card?

All the hotels i have stayed in always ask for a CC upfront, before they let the room. No CC no room!

I got the sense that I had checked into the wrong kind of hotel in Asoke when the mini bar featured condoms and KY.  Live and learn.  Checked out the next morning.  The room turned out to be smaller than the Orbitz ad.  Tiny, in fact.

Obviously the luxury hotels don't hire 5 or 10 "security guards" to gang-beat the snot out of guests who skip paying their bills.
