Shallow marine areas with wind farms transmit noise and vibration via turbine foundations, through water. This disorients and negatively impacts whales, particularly w. r. t. navigation, migration, breeding, feeding, and communication. Deaths have not been directly attributed to wind farm noise as yet, but this study topic is relatively new, and deaths are certainly possible. During the construction phase of wind farms, the volume of ship/boat traffic increases, this raises the risk of serious collision with cetaceans. Although not yet proven, it is likely that some cetaceans have already been injured or perished and that breeding has been affected as a consequence of so many marine wind farms.

I certainly have not implied that on-shore wind farms are "perfectly" safe for whales but then again, whales don't live on-shore, so they should be OK.
