Bangkokians are now the fattest Thais

Government workers are possibly the largest group, perhaps led by the staff at the Ministry of Health.

More than 56% of people living in Bangkok suffer from abdominal obesity, putting them at greater risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) than those living in other provinces, said Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin.

The minister unveiled the figures on Sunday during the launch of an NCD event in Bangkok to discuss why the capital’s residents are stricken with higher rates of diabetes, hypertension and cardiac disease, compared to people in other parts of the country.

A recent study showed 56.1% of people in Bangkok had abdominal obesity, compared to 39.4% nationwide. Some 12.5% of people in the capital were diagnosed with diabetes, while only 9.5% of people nationwide have diabetes.

The lifestyle of Bangkokians has always been like that. Thirty years ago, there were barely any gyms, and people weren’t obese back then either. Now there are hundreds of gyms, so in fact, people are probably moving a lot more now after work than before. The real issue is the change in diet and increased access to calorie-dense food. Nearly everything they eat and drink now is loaded with sugar too. Obesity is based 80% on diet and only about 20% on lack of physical activity.

wealthier people can afford more non-essential foods, which tend to be junk foods ..

also, they can afford more western foods like pizza more often than rural thais , if rural thais eat it at all

Western food is a small part of the problem.  KFC seems to be the most popular with Thais.  But, opposed to what many think Thai food is not that healthy.  Way too much oil, deep fried palm oil, mostly little vegetables,  fat, sugar and MSG widely used.  Another thing is Thai portions are generally smaller, but it seems the number of orders are greater people ordering 3 or 4 different foods instead of one.

The gyms in places like Pattaya are mostly Falang working out.  The gyms in Bangkok do have some Thais, but very little considering the population.

Although true, there are fat locals all over Thailand, as the diets are the same all over. What makes a difference, at least a little, is that in the country they are getting more exercise, as most of the country people are farmers, who work outside long hours. The same goes for the US where I'm from, and even the farmers use machines more than they did before, with AC, so they aren't exempt, especially with all the fried food Americans eat, especially in the country areas.

Many go to gyms and still stay overweight because they won't change their eating habits. People love food, and much of the best tasting food is high calorie. A lot don't realize that drinking a lot of calories in any form makes your chances of staying slim remote. Western food coming here is why Asians are expanding, especially those sugar drinks and alcohol.

It's not Thais only, see all the farang walking Meat Balls.

If western food was never adopted here, most Thais would be lean. Using oil a lot isn't the culprit, nor is MSG. Stir frying isn't bad in and of itself. Their basic diet has always been rice, pork, fish, chicken, veggies and fruit. You don't get overweight on that, especially if you're a farmer who works much of the day. It's the western drinks and food, snacks, etc, along with beer, added to that Thai diet that has them gaining weight and slowly catching up with westerners.

Yet, still, compared to BKK girls, the Average American Tattooed  Woman....

Still Takes the Cake, ....in fatness...and only when she wants to....

Big Time!

America will Always be No. !....in everything.

This is a given.

And, we like it like this.

America invented the BIG MAC, and the Big Everything.....

By comparison, Thai girls in BKK are just plain puny....

Note: This girl is not only attractive, meaning her happy face, but also Super Duper.... You can just tell that she is happy in her skin.

Go Girl Go....!!!!

Note2:  Still, I wonder how many pontoons under that raft, and their buoyancy, in order to keep her afloat.  That raft is hardly tilted, at all.  Amazing!

Same the world over as a people tend to get more affluent > ergo lazier. People have more money and spend more time eating & drinking and loading up with 7-11 stuff.  Agree above also; it’s not all on sugar and western food, Thai food can be very unhealthy and obese-inducing.

In the US you have to live near a university if you want to see attractive girls on a regular basis. And dont make it obvious youre hanging around to avoid any lawsuit

As a country, certainly #1 in big-headedness. The arts, culture, history, science & innovation, class, manners… not so much.

Take the cake, looks like she's eaten the whole bakery!

And the baker.

America has about 350 million people plus another 100 million who knows...lol.

Let's say that 10 percent are fit.   1 percent are amazingly fit.   That's enough for any country.  fattest and maybe the fittest.  that's OK.

richest, but not the poorest.

and Florida.  100 million nutjobs.

Thailand doesn't have the same luxury of letting too many going fat.

as far as hotties.....at least a few million.   i only need a few hundred thousand.

In the rural areas, Thais are far less likely to have access to, or afford the KFC, MacDonald's and Pizza Hut offerings.

It's no accident Japanese have the longest average life spans, and an obesity rate of only 4%. Their fast food outlets are less than one-fifth of those in America.

I beg to differ on the role of fat in obesity. I eat lashings of cheese, which is 40% fat. My BMI is normal.

OTOH, sugar is banned from my diet, as are any high carb fruit and vegetables.

Every time I go to the local Lotus, which has a Pizza Company, Kfc,  and Dunkin Donuts they are packed with locals. I live in the country, 30 kilos from the nearest big town, and they're always bringing home KFC or frying their own chicken.

It's no lie that Okinawa is in a blue zone, is Japanese, which follows the blue zone diets, which has the longest living people on earth. They eat fish, a little meat, grains, nuts, vegetables-especially root ones, and fruit. The Japanese themselves eat pretty healthy also.

You can surely stay low body fat by starving your body of sugars, but it's not a good idea to  leave carbs out, especially for the gastro system. I went 50 years living on high carb, low fat and moderate protein and stayed lean with no cardio problems. High fat diets are not healthy but fat isn't a problem, especially cheese, as long as it's not most of your diet. Natural sugar is fine. Refined and added sugar isn't. If you eat more carbs, you just need to move more.

You always say as usual when it's me that always proves you wrong. That doesn't make you look too convincing. The basic diets in Thailand are the same things made from the same basic ingredients. Various regions have certain spices added to those basic foods. Most people in the country areas  are farmers or farm oriented. The cities around the farms aren't country, but most have village ties.

Yes.

BUT, I really have no bias based on anything OTHER than IQ.

So if she is smart.

And, if she is happy....

All is well and good.

I would like to think that she has an IQ of....

At least 135...which is quite a bit higher than 98 percent of the posters on TV....

Just judging from the quality of the postings here.

So....

Her weight means nothing to me.

And, also, I bet she can float in the lake far longer than you.

Which might be an advantage, next time we experience a flood.

Here we go with more nonsense.

If you ever actually get out of your village you would see that “Issan restaurants” have  a completely different menu to southern “Kao Geng” restaurants, which differ from central thai cuisine and northern cuisine.

It is all the ingredients not just “certain spices”.

I often wonder if you are a troll, could anyone actually live in Thailand but know so little?
It is incredible.

To you it's nonsense. To everyone else with sense it's facts. I've been all over Thailand and see what restaurants offer. The same basics with a few local differentiations added in, still made from the same basic ingredients. I ate in Thai restaurants hundreds of times in the US and they had the same things, and were from all over Thailand. I often wonder if you're not just a teenager, because your replies show that type of thinking. Assuming every time.

Take me out to paradise city where the burgers are big and the chicken is crispy.... Oh can I take extra home...

I'm currently in Da Nang, Vietnam until mid June then back to Thailand. There's a lot less fat/obese people here in Da Nang. However, I can see the Vietnamese are starting to eat the same sugary junk that Thailand stocks in their stores(to the ceiling).

I count about 1 in 20 Vietnamese being obese when I'm back in Bangkok or Pattaya I'll go to a store like 7/11 or Big C and usually 8-10 out of 20 are obese.

Literally every day gets worse and worse.
