Ex-Air Hostess Charlotte Lee Arrested for £1.5m Cannabis in Sri Lanka

Charlotte May Lee, a 21-year-old former British air hostess from Coulsdon, South London, finds herself at the centre of a drug smuggling scandal after being apprehended at Colombo Airport, Sri Lanka. Lee was intercepted by customs officials carrying 46 kilogrammes of high-grade Kush cannabis, with an estimated street value of £1.5 million, in her luggage after a flight from Bangkok.

This sizeable haul, which officials have labelled as the largest Kush bust in the airport's history, was allegedly destined for affluent local consumers. Sri Lankan customs officers, alongside Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) officials, are now delving deep into the origins and logistics of the consignment, suggesting organised crime involvement.

Charlotte, once a TUI cabin crew member and now a lash technician, had been celebrating her 21st birthday in Thailand in April with her sister from Australia. Following a brief return to the UK, Lee hinted at new job prospects abroad before posting beachside photos and travel snippets, culminating in her arrest at Colombo.

Her social media, rife with images of sunlit beaches and lively gatherings, painted the picture of a young woman enjoying her independence and travel, making the recent developments surrounding her arrest all the more startling for her peers and family. Friends describe her as a hardworking and joyful individual, expressing disbelief at her involvement in such a serious crime.

One friend shared their shock, noting: “Charlotte was a grafter. None of us saw this coming.” This sentiment echoes another close acquaintance who remembered spotting a woman with an English accent, resembling Lee, amidst footage of the arrest.

The UK’s Foreign Office has been quick to provide consular support, stepping in to liaise with Sri Lankan authorities and keeping in close contact with Charlotte's family. Her detention comes shortly after Bella May Culley, an 18-year-old from County Durham, faced arrest in Georgia under similar circumstances, suggesting a pattern of young Britons entangled in drug trafficking plots tied to Southeast Asia.

Charlotte Lee remains in custody as investigators seek to uncover the scope of this operation and determine her role. Her unexpected situation serves as a poignant reminder of the severe consequences associated with drug offences abroad, where laws are often far stricter than in the UK.

This unsettling development has left family, friends, and the broader community anxiously awaiting further information as the investigation continues. The stark reality now facing Charlotte is a far cry from the recent glamour of her travels and career aspirations, placing her future in uncertain waters.

Guess this explains the uptick in European tourists that TAT was bragging about yesterday.

  • No sympathy for either of them. The risks are well known. Two young lives ruined.

  • Another scenario is that BKK detected the stuff and liaised with Colombo to inform them, so they could catch her at arrival (saving themselves all the hassle involved)

Interesting that she was travelling from Bangkok, just like the girl who did the same thing and was caught in Georgia.  Smuggling cannabis from Thailand is obviously big business. These two got caught, but presumably many get through.

The Londoner, who was training to become an eyelash technician, attended Negombo Magistrates Court on Monday.

The generation of women brought up on Instagram is doing anything to keep up with the Kardashians.

Onlyfans and escorting aren't covering the lifestyle for 99.5% of them, so drug smuggling is the latest profession.

So dumb

So the flight left Bangkok and nobody no alarm bells went off that luggage had weed in it interesting TIT

A British, young and stupid.

How low are the requirements being an "air hostess"? IQ less than 50?

Congrats. Rott in jail.

Also she was a former air hostess for TUI, the phrasing makes it sound like she was a British Air (ways) hostess, she's still British but a former air hostess

No sympathy, she knew more than most what the outcome would be if rumbled.

As weed is legal in Thailand they probably saw it as a good export trade business.

Something seems off. Both young gals. Both not affected in Thailand. Both done in on their next arrival. How do large amounts get through initially?????????? Has to be impossible in this day and age to have that much go through an Airport. We really need to hear their side of the story.

Seems it is very easy to smuggle things out of Thailand in a suitcase on a plane.

Very reassuring knowing no terrorist would think to take some explosive device on one 🙄🙈🙈🙈

Thai airports need to review their whole security at the airport as there are obviously several workers who can do anything if the price is right.

Interesting that she was departing from Bangkok and they did not detect this sizable haul ?

Height: minimum 155.5 centimetres. Weight: proportional to height as per body mass index (BMI) Appearance: positive body language, well-groomed, fair complexion and no visible tattoos. Health: physically fit and healthy.High school diploma. ............Nothing to do with being British but greed.

Question is how was she able to pass security in bkk with that much? Perhaps miscommunication between corrupt airport staff here and there.

Then Thailand would jail her, dealing with the court case, the British Embassy, etc. It would be easier to let them get caught on arrival. If I was in charge it's what I'd do, nice export deal.

They could have put an air tag in her bag and let her go.  they're not interested in catching the rich people that financed her journey.

....and both are British. Maybe there is a criminal British girl gang specialized in drugs?

"once a TUI cabin crew member and now a lash technician an idiot"

Now that Cannabis is legalized in Thailand, do Thai customs no longer check baggage for it?  Or do they check for it and then just tip off the police at the destination?

I would like to know how she managed the get through Bangkok with 46 Kg of the stuff. Massive excess baggage to start with and then customs???

People don't seem to know that drug-sniffer dogs operate in the luggage area of airports and that bags are x-rayed for organic materials.  The chances of getting arrested are very high nowadays.

When she is released from jail, she won't be good-looking anymore. Here is an article about Colombo's women's jail:
https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2011/7/25/sri-lankan-jails-hell-for-women

Drug traffickers should research what jails are like in the countries where they get caught and ask themselves: "Could I stand being jailed in this (hellhole) place for (20) years?"

Shall we start with a #gofundme already? To pay all the lawyers and bribes, and of course the flights for the whole family ???😳
