Is it me?

Featured Replies

I went for lunch in my usual Santa fe "steak" restaurant the other day. I have been going there for years, get an annual discount card (199 baht) which gives you a couple of free meals plus 10% off ever bill for the next year. I sat down at a single table and waited for the menu. When I chose my meal, the waitress came to take the order. I ordered a spinach soup, a fish & chips and salad meal and - being as I was thirsty - a carafe of iced tea (carafe = 89 baht which gives about 3 glasses, as opposed to a glass of iced tea @ 49 baht). All was going fine until the waitress said: "One" (after I ordered the carafe of iced tea). So, you tell me, IS IT ME???

One what? Your post makes no sense

This has happened to me many times in Thailand.

I don't really understand why they would say that.

I just look at them funny, and repeat ONE and it usually goes OK.

I did have an incident years ago at a non-English speaking Chinese restaurant in the U.S. where there was similar issue about numbers although I don't recall the exact details. So they brought EIGHT of a dish that we only wanted one order for a group of three. Yes, there was a conflict from that and they were sure they were right. It wasn't a scam just a weird miscommunication.

BTW, that restaurant was on the verge of banning me after during a subsequent visit I accidentally spilled an entire jar of chili oil on their floor. Good times.

But again if the ONE happens to you in Thailand and I find it weird that people are saying it hasn't I think just repeating ONE will be OK.

I'm confused!  Surely the waitress is simply checking how many of each item you have ordered.  Nothing wrong with that.

Happened to me many times. I’m sitting there alone, order a steamed fish and the waitress asks “ one?”

She couldn't believe such a handsome man would be eating alone. Your posee of girlfriends must be powdering their noses in The Ladies before joining you.
