Ceiling Collapse at Thai Immigration Office Caused by Air Conditioning Leak

Immigration authorities have confirmed that a ceiling collapse at their training centre in central Bangkok was the result of an air conditioning malfunction, not a structural failure.

The incident occurred at 09:00, on 2 June in the “Chaiyo Yodsuk” meeting room on the third floor of the Immigration Bureau’s Personnel Training and Welfare Centre on Rama I Road, Pathumwan district. According to initial investigations, condensation from a malfunctioning air conditioning unit had dripped onto the ceiling panels over an extended period, weakening them until they eventually gave way.

A statement from the Immigration Bureau clarified that the collapse was unrelated to the building’s structural integrity. The damage was limited to one section of the meeting room ceiling.

National Police Chief, Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanpet, stated that the cause was water accumulation due to a clogged condenser in the air conditioning system. He noted that the unit had not been serviced for approximately three years, which led to poor ventilation and water leakage onto the ceiling panels.

“This incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of regular maintenance,” said Pol. Gen. Kittirat. “The air filters must be changed and the air conditioning units cleaned every six months to prevent such failures.”

The Royal Thai Police have instructed the engineering division and the Immigration Bureau to carry out a full inspection of the entire building. All other ceiling areas, air conditioning systems and potential leak points are being assessed to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

Authorities reiterated that no injuries were reported and that the building remains safe for use. Comprehensive maintenance and inspections are now underway.

no, it just shows that you dont need to service them every 6 months !!

They want us all dead, squashed and   Squelched..🤔

They very well could just simply be blaming it on the AC, a lot of the tile work here it's very poorly done, and done with very little skill. I had the same thing happen with my front patio, the entire ceiling collapsed due to a water leak from poorly laid tile.

Why does an Immigration office need a chandelier?

Because large meeting spaces are multi-use. It would look nice in your wedding pictures.

So, dips over and extended period of time, did they know about it, and chose to ignore it.

I'm pretty sure it will have shown signs of the water leak for months already, similar to this one.

Stuff like this happens in Malaysia and Indonesia pretty regularly, but it's usually the sewage pipes that come bursting through the ceilings, the stink lingers throughout the building for a very long time.

"Oh, no problem, it only leaks when it rains."  😊

I immediately thought of this ceiling, too, when I read this thread.

Mine does leak for several years already. But with Mirabegron, I am on the safe side.😄
