Thailand Ready for Military Action Amidst Cambodia Border Tensions

In an escalating border dispute with Cambodia, Thailand's military has declared readiness for a "high-level operation" to counter any breach of its sovereignty. This strong stance follows a deadly confrontation last week and highlights growing tensions between the neighbouring countries.

On Thursday, the Thai military issued a statement expressing concerns over Cambodia's increased military preparedness at the border, despite ongoing diplomatic dialogues. This assertion contrasts sharply with an earlier government statement calling for peaceful engagement through existing diplomatic channels.

"The army is prepared for a high-level military operation if necessary to respond to any sovereignty violations," the statement ahead of a high-command meeting on Friday reads. The Thai military emphasised that its border operations have been conducted with care and deliberation to prevent casualties while ensuring readiness to protect national sovereignty.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra corroborated the military's readiness to defend the country, following a National Security Council meeting on the issue. The armed forces chief voiced support for the government's peaceful resolution efforts, highlighting a delicate balance between military readiness and diplomatic dialogue.

The border dispute has historical roots and is further complicated by overlapping territorial claims. Last week's skirmish in an undemarcated area left a Cambodian soldier dead, intensifying nationalist sentiments. Despite this, Thailand and Cambodia maintain historically friendly ties, attributed to the relationship between their influential former leaders, Thaksin Shinawatra and Hun Sen.

The issue surfaces at a challenging time for Thailand's Pheu Thai Party-led government, which grapples with economic woes and political pressures. The Shinawatra family's history with the Thai military remains contentious, given the military's past coups against their governmental leadership.

The conflict draws parallels to past clashes, notably in 2011 over the Preah Vihear temple, a site of longstanding territorial dispute. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in favour of Cambodia in 2013, mandating that Thailand withdraw troops from disputed areas, a decision Thailand did not recognise concerning the court's jurisdiction.

Cambodia remains committed to peace, proposing to resolve disputes through the ICJ, urging Thai cooperation. As tensions simmer, the world watches closely, hoping for a resolution that maintains regional stability.

High level operation, as opposed to a level one?

Given it’s military prowess, Thailand is very fortunate to not have any playas at its borders, and I’m happy about that.

I'd agree the border incident was started deliberately.

But over the past week Tony T has been talking it down, whilst the military are talking it up. They certainly aren't doing anything for him. Quite the opposite IMHO.

someone died.  I can say every single war, genocide, everything is an attempt to gather more power elsewhere.  This is all conspiracy talk.  Hundreds of millions died, all a conspiracy.   It's all just a lie.  Simulation.  This tread is a distraction because the real problems are in 3937 weeks.

crazy talk

The invaders will be retaliated with bullets.

The way both sides shoot, about 20,000 rounds per casualty.

Flip the switch, close your eyes, look the other way and just point the weapon in the possible direction of the enemy and squeeze. Reload and repeat.

Where this is going to?

Will they fight if the International Court decide in favour Cambodia?

Can't believe😳

Thaksin and the military don't mix well, just remember who kicked the Shin's out of office.

The military don't give a stuff about Thaksin, in fact if he got banged up in jail they'd celebrate.

When the Thai fearless foreskin fusiliers move in this WAR will be over in no time. That is unless the Cambodians front up with their self made weapons. Then see who does a runner.

And if things don't to plan Teflon Tony will reappear with his neck support.

The Thai military sucks an enormous amount of money out of the treasury each year and provides very little in return, so they have to somehow justify their existence. They're blowing this up into something way beyond what it is, and it's likely just a flexing of muscles to remind people that they're there, and that they're somehow relevant.

as my old sergent use to say ' shoot first and then say 3 times halt who goes there ' !!

hmmm… let the boys shoot each other full of holes , all that pent up

aggression can’t be good for you?

Please no war. I have several important items from Lazada going to Cambodia

Stupidity is surpassed by stupidity😨..........and the "free" Thai media stokes the fire as usual!

Surely a ruling was clearly made by the international court in the Netherlands and Thailand accepted it at the time.
Now Thailand is starting to be difficult again, trying to escalate the situation, in my opinion they are the war hitters and not Cambodia.

You can read it up in the Bible already

"Lord, forgive them for they don't know what they are doing"

The shot which killed the Cambodian soldier came from a Thai weapon. Question is, how this this (as well as most likely all other weapons) get fired in the first place. Somchai the soldier would not dare to do anything without explicit order from higher up at the border. That higher up gets the orders from bigger wig in the province's capital. Latter consults with the army headquarters. In short, shooting is instructed/ordered and you have to dig around there first.

For me this is a repetition of the smoke screen the government pulled up in 2008, slightly to the West in Khao Phra Viharn (Sisaket province) compared to this year's incident.

Just be careful, you're playing with fire. Diplomatically the ice is pretty thin as both countries have BIG faces to lose and you might stir the racist pot on both sides of the border which would be the perfect start of a war.

Just saying ........

The Shins and the Hun Sens of this world, total scum,  are best of friends. Cambodia aided with them when Abhisit was in charge. Hun Sen hurled insult after insult at Abhisit.

So what it is all about?

Thailand got the usual problem if losing face?

Best Cambodia will ask UN for help/sending troops?

All tensions because of a small piece of land with a temple (probably)?

Unbelievable 😱

You don't need the Thai military for peaceful engagement. Hence the latter, aggression - so much simpler.

And the Thai military can justify more foreign purchased military armaments and aircraft.

Thailand - the Hub of ASEAN Aggression?

They dont seem to worry about Burma breaching the border's Wonder if thats because you buy there cheap oil n gas

It’s all pantomime, this border dispute is as Spidermike said just a show of relevance and making sure the money keeps flowing . The Cambodians are probably in on it with Thai military. As I’m pretty sure out of the 30,000 Thai generals, none will have a clue if it actually escalated into an actual conflict where the opposition were also a military force.

Well corruption I think will not stop this!. I also think Thailand's military won't either!.not enough experience in real warfare.  Also I believe there are too many 'how do I put this as not to offend the people concerned 'he/she. Elements. From what I've been told by a ladyboy restaurant.  They want to be in the army to get a boyfriend  !!!.

You're 💯 correct my friend. Perfect cure for the situation 👌. Total corruption again 👏
