Why the Hate for Cambodia?

Featured Replies

Never been, but followed a couple of Youtubers living there and it seems fine. They seem to like it.

Although one Youtuber admitted he moved there because cost of living was lower than Thailand and he pops into Pattaya for fun times a few times a year.

And another Youtuber did complain that he was no beach. Not as many beach options as Thailand and Vietnam.

And less developed = Phnom Penh is less polluted and traffic congested than Bangkok

Do you know how much Thailand has done for Cambodia, especially during the Khmer Rouge era? We took care of everything for them and now Cambodians dare to claim the land that we gave them shelter in those dark times.

Incorrect, Thailand never gave land to Cambodia, in fact Thailand grabbed land from Cambodia, hence the current border issues. Thailand lost face when the International Court of Justice ruled that the Preah Vihear Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) was located in Cambodia.

Do you love Mexicans as an American?

In the United States, over 43.4 million people aged five or older speak Spanish at home, according to the 2023 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census Bureau. This represents roughly 13.7% of the population. Additionally, the US is home to nearly 12 million bilingual Spanish speakers. Overall, it's estimated that there are 53 million Spanish speakers in the US. (Google) Asi es la vida.

"Yes, at its peak, the Spanish colonial territory of Mexico was indeed larger than the present-day United States. This area, known as New Spain, included not just modern-day Mexico but also extended into what is now the southwestern United States, including California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, most of Arizona, and parts of Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming. At its greatest extent, it also included parts of Central America. "

What you will discover is a complex (and at times contradictory) history

There may be an existing deep underlying psychic manifested in both Thailand and Cambodia cultures that influences the political clash. There was political division of Southeast Asia in the 1600's between two aggressive superpowers: France and Great Britain. Thailand was closely aligned with Britain vs Cambodia with France.

They are not claiming land, the border was decided by the international court last time in 2013, Thais of course being bad losers did not accept it.

The place oozes corruption from every crack in the pavement, if you can even call those broken slabs “streets.” The only foreigners who willingly stay there are washed-up sexpats, broke, bloated and staggering through life in a cocktail of meth fumes and cheap booze, clinging to their last shred of dignity like mold on a decaying wall. If you’re a balding, overweight eyesore with the fashion sense of a failed 70s porn star, congratulations, you’ve found paradise. For anyone else with a functioning brain and the bare minimum of self-worth, it’s a living nightmare, a purgatory disguised as a country.

I dont agree. At least in Siem Reap, life costs roughly the same as in Bangkok, although housing wise you get more bang for the buck in Siem.

My experience about Cambodia, makes me never want to go back. I was attempted mugged and hijacked by the driver I rented, and the poverty there killed my vibe. Horrible compared to other Asian countries.

Sounds like Philippines

What 's not to like about 3 dollar beach BbQ 's and 50 cent   happy hour draft beer in  even the tiniest little bar?

Hope the prices haven't gone up  !

As a resident of Siem Reap I am happy to say no! A small glass of draught beer is still 50 cents (around 17 baht at current exchange rate) and bargain meals can be enjoyed.  However since covid, several new bars and restaurants have been established where prices may be a little higher - just check their menu boards displayed outside for prices.

Imagine going into a beer bar in Pattaya, ordering a small glass of draught beer and getting change from a 20 baht note! Never.

It must have changed a lot in the last 3 years.

That is nothing like my experience from 40+ visits.

My life includes good quality western food and wine. The non-application of penal tax/duties means that Cambodia wins by a country mile.

If you are into 'local' food then Thailand is way superior.

Well I don't drink wine, nor have I been really cooking a lot. If you're basing expenses on wine and hotels well then probably Thailand is more expensive. If you talking about living in Siem as opposed to being a tourist, then the costs are approximately the same. But hey, I had a burger for my favorite burger joint last Tuesday in Siem that cost me $5. The same style Burger in Bangkok cost me $4. On the other hand, there are no $50 steaks in siem So.......

$50 steaks are probably $30 in Siem Reap , and a 2,000 Baht bottle of wine the same.

Years ago I used to bring back a case of Kangeroo Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from  the old lady in the booze shop, opposite the daytime market, for $48 a case. For that price I could only have bought 2 bottles in Thailand.

Nobody with any existing taste buds eat steak in Cambodia. Cambodia does have cheaper booze as the amount of drunks indicates.

A nonsense post, I thought you were better than that. Did you think before you posted?

Did you consider the number of drunks in Thailand? The amount of gut-rot Lao Khao consumed in Thailand?

Regularly during discussions I read folks disrespecting Cambodia. Folks act as if someone who resides in Cambodia is a "lower end" or broke or Cheap Charlie tourist or a paedo

I guess my question would be, why do folks dislike Cambodia? 10 years ago I can understand it, and I have no quarrel with those who think little of Snookyville. I personally dont like PP, but Cambodia itself is a fabulous laid back lifestyle, especially for retirees who just need to pay once a year, and get a free temple pass on top of it.

Are you looking for moral support or sympathy?

You know where to find the last one in the dictionary !
