Vintage Hi-Fi

Featured Replies

I am a product of the 60's with 70's & 80's rock and love the sound of Vintage hi-fi. I have a penchant for all things Cerwin-Vega, especially when teamed with a Marantz/Sansui/Technics amp of decent power. I will retire to Thailand next year and would love to bring my collection with me from Australia, but transport costs will be the real killer. Seems crazy to pay 3-4 times the value of something just to ship it here.

What I am looking for is some decent forums and /or Vintage HiFi shops to lurk around, discuss and maybe do the occasional trade. I will be living in Bua Yai (60k's north of Korat) but a trip down to Bangkok or further afar in pursuit of a bargain would not be out of the question.

All suggestions are greatly accepted & appreciated.

Cheers, Robbie

The night train market in Srinikarin, Bangkok, may be worth a trip.  At the back of the market is several rows of shops, and some sell vintage gear, such as old film cameras, antiques and Hi Fi equipment.  If they don't have what you want, they would know where to get it.

If that's Marantz NR-1200, it's available in Thailand. At least it was a couple of years ago, and it's quite affordable. Cerwin Wega is also available here. You can even find it on Lazada, with older models available both on Lazada and Kaidee, where you'll also find a lot of vintage electronics. Open kaidee.com in Chrome and translate page to English to see descriptions in English as well, not just menus. There's a shop that has a marketplace also, Munkong Gadget. Unsure if it's still there but it is a high end electronics shop, and on forum people post ads for stuff they are selling (or buying).

As lots of high end stuff here are imported from Japan, be careful to inspect the photos for whether it's 220-240V model, or 100V model. Not difficult to get transformer, but they are bulky, especially 500W+ ones.

Then make up your mind if it's worth bringing it over.

Pretty far for pursuit of a bargirl. Shop local. Oh, sorry!

There used to be a vintage audio shop at top of Pantip Plaza. Still there?

There is only one real Aladdin's cave for vintage mid to high end, and that's in a condo building in a soi behind Fortune Town. It's called Mister Balance.  They moved from Pantip a few years ago.

Much better sounding equipment than that can be found in Thailand but generally not cheaply

How old are you? You likely can't hear the highs anymore anyway. Do one of the frequency hearing tests and you will be shocked how your hearing may gave degraded.
