  • Then they should remove as many Thais from the roads as possible. They are the ones who can't drive

  • Very strange, as foreign folk from first world countries have to pass a stringent driving test, where as here, that is non-existent............

  • Kind of unbelievable.   Why don't they put their resources into education of Thai drivers.  The total abuse of common sense driving here is sickening.

Do tourists normally check the rules for getting a foreign driving license before they book their two week holiday?

If they want to drive, probably.  If they don't, and then come a cropper, they'll certainly remember it, and tell all their friends.

You seriously do not know that most countries' licences are legal here for tourists use?

Obviously you're reading something that has not been reported in the OP, they haven't introduced any new hurdles for foreign drivers, either.

Bugger off with your pointless pedantry for once.

I was replying to a poster who said this will kill tourism (or something similar).  I asked him if he really think tourists check the rules about getting foreign driver's licenses before booking a holiday. Of course they don't, so how will it kill tourism? The point I was making was obvious - that saying it will kill tourism is stupid.

And yet you still find a pathetic little non-related thing to argue about. The biggest pedant on the entire forum, and not even being clever, just indulging in pedantry for the sake of it even when it has nothing to do with the point being made.

What a life.

"Thailand Tightens Rules for Foreign Drivers: Tests Now Mandatory".

No, they are not yet mandatory.

Try reading to whom I was responding and the context before the pointless, insulting personal attacks. I was responding to BangkokReady, not you.

At least I can read and understand context.

Ah fair point. I just saw my quote in there and didn't click "expand" so it did look like you were replying to me.

Just yesterday I saw a man driving a bike with his helmet on, and a child on the front and back without them….. couldn’t have been older than 5.

Are they really that thick?

Mark.

Safety features - front and rear airbags.

Reading between the lines…

They are not happy with drivers from one or more countries.

In order not to single out and therefore annoy aforementioned country/ countries, they make all foreigners do the test.

Makes sense….punish all for the actions of some.

Anecdotally, there have been numerous reports on AN of a certain East Asian country’s citizens being involved in crashes, likely a direct impact of both their poor driving and the significant increase in numbers over past 5 years. :whistling:

Foreigners are not all British and Americans, which, of course,  are the best drivers in the world, as we read on this forum every day.

Foreigners are also people from Madagascar and Nauru, where requirements for a DL are not  too strict.

Did I mention India?

Thailand is set to introduce stricter regulations for foreign nationals "seeking to obtain a Thai driver's licence" The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has proposed a draft regulation requiring all foreigners to pass a written test, irrespective of holding a valid international driving permit (IDP).

Genuine tourists would presumably remain exempt when they roll up at the Car Rental kiosk with Home Country Licence and accompanying IDP per the Vienna Convention.

Lack of care for children in general. They know the driver has to wear a helmet but seem to dismiss that passengers need one also, to not get a ticket.

I don't see this as a bad thing - in isolation. It can't hurt for foreigners to take a written exam so they better understand the rules of the Thai roads.

However, the issue lies with the quality of examinations in the first place.

Then of course , this completely ignores the elephant in the room...    a bit elephant, knocking one out and spaffing in the face of common sense....

Thailands traffic woes are created primarily by the the drivers on Thailands roads...  from blocking box junctions, creating gridlock, to pulling out without looking, jumping lights and riding down pavements etc...

Thailand 'has' to start looking inwards to see improvements - it can't always 'look' out for external reasons for its issues - when many are so obviously home grown.

This isn't an anti-Thai rants - its an anit-absence of common sense rant - ALL licensing needs to become more strict with greater training and oversight - not just foreigners.

So absolutely nothing to do with the total lack of enforcement of the existing, very adequate road traffic laws by the police?

I see.

I am one of the lucky ones who has a lifetime licence. Always amuses me whenever I am asked to produce my licence at a roadside police check. I can almost read the Police minds. How does this farang b***tard, have a lifetime licence and mine is only for 5 years😁

Lucky bugger, I missed out as I did my test about 2 weeks after they got rid of the lifetime licence.

It's also just a proposal.

Oh! sorry, for the pedant I should have fully checked my post and should have said - if it passes into law it will only be for people applying for a driver's  licence to drive in Thailand, happy now?

This will be a big boost of income for driving schools. I got my MC license at a school in Pattaya area, cost was 1000 thb for 3 days school. First day was spent taking driving test in English till I could pass 100%. Then you have the plank test which you have to drive real slow which makes it hard for the inexperienced. The last day included taking the written test on computer at the school. Armed with the school's paperwork you can go to land office and do the usual color and reaction tests.

I think the car license cost like 5000 thb.

Licence Validity Extension: The validity of personal driving licences will increase from two years to five for applicants with a previously expired Thai temporary licence.

How is this a change? My Thailand D/L has always been active for 5 years once I completed the first 2 years temporary.

Questions 2. You're at a red light do you....

1. Wait until it's green to proceed.

2. What red light ?

3. Wait to see what Somchai does first..then blast through the light when its kinda clear.

4. Is that a cop. Turn around go the wrong way back down the soi because you weren't wearing a helmet.

i especially liked their question about what do you do when there is a ghost on the road.

According to a Ministry of Transport source, the DLT is actively seeking public feedback on the draft, which highlights updated protocols for training, testing, and licence renewals for both Thai and foreign drivers.

They are seeking feedback on whether to apply these protocols. Since Thais will be included you be rest assured that it will be rejected by the public. Should they choose to apply these types of changes for foreigners only then you be be sure it would be approved.

I'm pretty sure if there was an actual proper road test, that 90% of Thai's would never pass it. In fact, if they try to go through with this, all Western countries should never allow Thai's to drive with an IDP, as they lack even basic safe driving skills.

Sometimes I realize I'm never understand how the other 99% live.

Maybe they should consider these standards for all Thai drivers, most foreigners have undergone much stricter driving lessons, exams and tests to obtain a driving licence
