I was replying to a poster who said this will kill tourism (or something similar).  I asked him if he really think tourists check the rules about getting foreign driver's licenses before booking a holiday. Of course they don't, so how will it kill tourism? The point I was making was obvious - that saying it will kill tourism is stupid.

They are not happy with drivers from one or more countries.

In order not to single out and therefore annoy aforementioned country/ countries, they make all foreigners do the test.

 

Makes sense….punish all for the actions of some. 
 

Anecdotally, there have been numerous reports on AN of a certain East Asian country’s citizens being involved in crashes, likely a direct impact of both their poor driving and the significant increase in numbers over past 5 years. 

Foreigners are not all British and Americans, which, of course,  are the best drivers in the world, as we read on this forum every day.

Foreigners are also people from Madagascar and Nauru, where requirements for a DL are not  too strict. 

Did I mention India?

 

Thailand is set to introduce stricter regulations for foreign nationals "seeking to obtain a Thai driver's licence" The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has proposed a draft regulation requiring all foreigners to pass a written test, irrespective of holding a valid international driving permit (IDP).

 

Genuine tourists would presumably remain exempt when they roll up at the Car Rental kiosk with Home Country Licence and accompanying IDP per the Vienna Convention.

Lack of care for children in general. They know the driver has to wear a helmet but seem to dismiss that passengers need one also, to not get a ticket.

Thailands traffic woes are created primarily by the the drivers on Thailands roads...  from blocking box junctions, creating gridlock, to pulling out without looking, jumping lights and riding down pavements etc... 

 

Thailand 'has' to start looking inwards to see improvements - it can't always 'look' out for external reasons for its issues - when many are so obviously home grown.

 

This isn't an anti-Thai rants - its an anit-absence of common sense rant - ALL licensing needs to become more strict with greater training and oversight - not just foreigners.

Oh! sorry, for the pedant I should have fully checked my post and should have said - if it passes into law it will only be for people applying for a driver's  licence to drive in Thailand, happy now?

This will be a big boost of income for driving schools. I got my MC license at a school in Pattaya area, cost was 1000 thb for 3 days school. First day was spent taking driving test in English till I could pass 100%. Then you have the plank test which you have to drive real slow which makes it hard for the inexperienced. The last day included taking the written test on computer at the school. Armed with the school's paperwork you can go to land office and do the usual color and reaction tests.

 

I think the car license cost like 5000 thb.

They are seeking feedback on whether to apply these protocols. Since Thais will be included you be rest assured that it will be rejected by the public. Should they choose to apply these types of changes for foreigners only then you be be sure it would be approved. 

I'm pretty sure if there was an actual proper road test, that 90% of Thai's would never pass it. In fact, if they try to go through with this, all Western countries should never allow Thai's to drive with an IDP, as they lack even basic safe driving skills.

Sometimes I realize I'm never understand how the other 99% live.
