Crossing into Laos with Vehicle – Any Issues?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I currently hold a DTV visa and I'm wondering about the practicality of traveling to Laos and Vietnam with my vehicles (a Toyota Corolla, Honda PCX, or Kawasaki Ninja 250R).

  • Is it relatively easy to cross borders with these vehicles under my name?

  • Or would it be simpler if I registered them under my girlfriend’s name instead?

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated—thanks in advance!

Did it years ago, and always Nong Khai / Vientiane crossing.   Easy enough, though need some paperwork before, and then I think we had to buy insurance on Laos side, very inexpensive.

Would imagine easier now, and link above should help, maybe.

thank you very much mates!

Good luck, enjoy, and report back if you feel inclined.

My Thai wife does it every 2x weeks into Laos (thai reg hilux, it can only be temp imported for 14 days at a time).  Not sure about Vietnam.

Just follow the advice from the other forum topics (links below) for Laos, need vehicle passport from Thai side, valid registration, blue book, proof its unencumbered, THA sticker on the back to show its RHD vehicle.

Be prepared to be frustrated each time, lots of shuffling between different booths on both Thailand and Laos side with filling out papers and getting things stamped etc.

Good luck

If you have the blue book your next move is to get the purple car passport. A few pieces of paper at the border but no problem. I have heard right hand drive vehicles are not allowed into Vietnam but have never had this confirmed by someone that was refused entry.

Mr Sing, do not transfer registration of your vehicles into your girlfriends name, you will no longer be the owner.

It used to be very easy - I don't think anything has changed - I used to cross every month - It took me about half an hour to get from Mukdahan to Savannakhet. Obviously you need the right docs. THe cars can't be on finance and  you must have the purple book car passport
