paying online

Featured Replies

Being old and old fashioned I have always paid cash and never thought to buy online, so I know nothing. 6 months ago I tried buying an anti-virus program online using my Bangkok bank debit card, it was refused. I tried using my German debit card, this was also refused. My German bank told me that I can't use the card to buy online outside of Europe. My Bangkok bank lady said that to use the Bangkok bank debit card online I have to ring up the number on the back of the card but on reading it the number was just to report finding a lost card. I was thinking of taking a holiday in Cambodia but saw on the website that I should buy a e visa online for 30 dollars, I haven't tried yet (dollars is an increase in the difficulties perhaps.

I can't apply for a German credit card because I'm outside of Europe, to apply I must have an address there. It seems unlikely that I could get a Thai credit card and anyway I would rarely use it. Paypal seems out of the question NDID doesn't like our ID number. People seem to buy online all the time, how do you do it?

You get a Wise account. They'll send a credit card everywhere. Including Thailand.

I looked into that, they don't do Thailand.

Ring up your German bank and ask them to switch whatever on so you can do internet payments and foreign payments, my UK bank i can personally switch these things on and off. Try their app or website

Go to Bangkok bank branch, then they connect you to head office by phone. You answer a couple of questions and then you can do foreign payments. (bring ATM card, passport and bank book)

They won't open an account based on a Thai bank. So he'd need to open it in Germany. And it's a debit card, not a credit card.

Unfortunately when I ordered the card from Germany they sent me a debit card without even ATM ability even though I specifically asked them for it. They apologized of course and offered to send me the correct card but this means they (the factory that makes them) would instantly cancel the card I have, it can take 6 to 8 weeks before a new card arrives so I'm staying with what I have, it's good enough for wise. The last time I waited for a card it took so long that I filled out an online form for international bank transfers..... "We cant do that, you have to sign it in front of us". I rang them up and spoke to the bank manager, who knew me, "Just this once but not again". My German friends are not very flexible.

I got a credit card sent to Thailand. You just have to give an EU address when you open.

He would need to use an EU address to open, but the card can then be sent to Thailand. It is a credit card, not a debit card, VISA to be precise.

Anyway my German bank knows me well, I've been with them for 35 years and of course Wise knows where I live, telling porkies can lead to loss of service.

You can call the number on the back of the Thai debit card to enable online payments.

It also helps just before traveling to call them and let them know where you are going, and the dates.

What for a BBL Debit Card do you have, Union Pay or Master Card? I have a Master Card and can do national and International Online Payments.

Excellent. What's your credit limit?

WISE? Credit Card? Don't be silly.

You can only spend what you have in the various accounts ie DEBIT Card.

- If you have the Bangkok Bank Be1st Debit card take your passport to the closest branch and ask them to activate it for online/international transactions.

- Yes, it's difficult to use home country credit cards without a home country address. They're trying to prevent fraud. Some banks will do it, some will not. You have to call or email them to find out.

- Can I use a Thai bank issued prepaid credit card anywhere in the world? or is it only good in Thailand?

You cannot get a UK Credit Card without a verified UK address.

Once you have the Card, you CAN use it almost anywhere, but most of them charge a fee and use a lousy exchange rate.

Master card. Do you have to ring up the number on the back first?

My Thai bank card would also not initially work for online payments, until it was enabled which was a simple online action.  Just call your bank, it will be done in seconds.

No, never have made a Call to the number. First I have had a Union Pay Card, but was good for nothing. Went to nearest Bangkok Bank Branch and changed to Masteracrd and all was working from the beginning.

some sites are still blocked by card issuers if they are in suspicious locations or have had issues reported in the past so turning on access doesnt always work.

Not all vendors accept Mastercard or Visa. There are also 3rd party verification sites that sit between vendor and card issuer and some of those do not not work.

Same as a This credit card for Farang. You have to deposit 30000bht if you want a 30000 baht credit limit.

If you don't pay full balance by due date you charged high interest even though they hold your 3000 held as security.

I still happy for touch and go convenience to have the card in wallet.

So the farang Thai credit card  is really like debit card ,.

Wise relies on amount of deposit you hold in account.

All good, if you haven't got it you can't spend it. For me just old habit, always previously used credit cards in my business.  I always pay  balances before due dates. Never been charged interest on plate otr over limit payments.

This is the real crime. You can easily get entirely adequate anti-virus software for free. Right now, I'm using Avast on my phone.
