A female student was struck by a bus while crossing a pedestrian crossing in Bangkok, in a shocking incident that was captured on CCTV and now widely shared on social media.

The incident occurred on Sukhothai Road, just before the Wachira Phayaban Intersection. According to a video posted by Facebook user Sansern Ruangrit, the student was attempting to cross at a designated crosswalk when a bus travelling against the flow of traffic hit her at speed. The impact was forceful, violently hurling the young woman through the air before she slid across the asphalt.

In his caption, Sansern expressed frustration and concern:

“Crossing a crosswalk is still not safe. You must look right-left-right carefully, otherwise, you might get hit by a bus driving against traffic. Wishing the accident victim a safe recovery.”

The footage has prompted widespread outrage online, with many once again questioning the lack of enforcement surrounding road safety laws, particularly those designed to protect pedestrians.

A Facebook user named Chutikarn CT, who claimed to be a friend of the injured student, later commented on the post to confirm that the victim is safe and received medical treatment in hospital. No further details were immediately available regarding the extent of her injuries.

The identity of the bus driver and whether any charges have been brought were not confirmed. However, netizens are calling for authorities to investigate the case thoroughly and take serious action to deter future violations of traffic laws.

Local officials and police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. Public pressure is mounting, however, with many demanding improved signage, stricter penalties for traffic violations and better driver training across the country.

I often see vehicles in Thailand travelling in the wrong direction, that's OK it's Thailand but what is weird, these vehicles are travelling at speed.

You're not expecting a vehicle on the wrong of the road but if these vehicles were travelling slow you can adjust.

There is nothing wrong with the crossings.

It is due to the many stupid drivers and the complete lack of enforcement and punishment.

What should happen, but probably won't, is that the bus driver should be charged with multiple offences and jailed for a minimum of 10 years, lose his licence for life, be sacked from the bus company and the bus company fined 19 million baht.

The last line should read, and the bus company fined 10 million baht.

My apologies. I did proofread it, but I missed that bit.

there are actually 2 buses going the wrong way

that's so if the 1st bus misses the girl then the 2nd one will get her, sort of like a back up,

I hope the girl is ok.

I hope both bus drivers are fired, fined heavily, and hopefully lose their licenses. They by no means should be allowed to drive a bus or any other large vehicle ever again.

The famous saying on this forum, something I've been hearing since arriving here...

"Always look both ways when crossing a one day street"....

Clearly, this wasn’t a one-way street, but even so, the bus was unlawfully driving on the wrong side of the road. Yet again, we witness another pedestrian failing to look, seemingly operating under the assumption that it’s safe to cross with disregard for their own wellbeing....  Thats not to suggest its the pedestrians fault, but I could never imagine crossing a road here or anywhere, without checking, checking and then checking some more...

Yes, wrong side of the road, AT SPEED.

If the bus was going slower, much slower they would have seen each other, the accident would not have happened

500 THB fine and a scolding for the bus driver who hit her.  500 THB fine for the bus and cars driving behind the bus the wrong way down the street.

In both driving and cross a road the only defense is to ALWAYS look both way and ALWAYS expect that some idiot will be coming down the street the wrong way.  It's culturally ingrained and obvious is acceptable unless you are caught or kill someone.

If it was my daughter, I would have dragged the bus driver out of the bus and beat him to death. I stopped parking in the designated school parking area, where we need to walk across 3  separate Zebra crossings to get to school, mainly because of how many close calls we've had with motorist trying to hit us inside the crossings. I have had to kick so many car doors, smack several car mirrors with a book bag, and push motorcyclist to a stop too many times (including on the sidewalks) getting to school. I now drive her right to the front door of the school, not taking any more chances. My hatred for Thai drivers and the culture of me-first A-holes in this country who do nothing about it, is well known, and well deserved! The only thing worse is some of the Farang apologists on here who defend Thai bad/dangerous behavior, like it should be tolerated, I hate these idiots more than anyone 🤬

Exactly how I feel, and what I would have done, and yet another reason I won't allow my daughter to live here longer than necessary for us to re-establish back home. I always tell my daughter when I'm with her to look both ways, at least twice, as the drivers here are among the worst on earth, don't care and it wouldn't mean anything to them if they hit someone, let alone killed them. I don't want to get to that point where my daughter is a victim here as it would end very badly for all those concerned.

Interesting charges being that she didn't die. Very lucky. The bus driver of course should be charged. Pedestrian crossings mean absolutely nothing here.

Oops my mistake. I didnt read it just watched the video. Incredible she survived.

Thanks for pointing that out.

"If it was my daughter, I would have dragged the bus driver out of the bus and beat him to death"

Oh no you wouldn't.  That just American hyperbole combined with machismo. Before your road rage got started you would be on your back with a crowd of angry citizens armed with hoes and shoes giving you a good thrashing.

"If it were my daughter I would be in the ambulance; all the way to the hospital" Might be a more appropriate response.

Forget any enforcement around road safety... use your common sense.
