A two-year-old girl was rushed to hospital after accidentally consuming cannabis-infused gummies left unattended in her home following a birthday party. The child’s parents have now spoken out to warn others, as they grapple with medical bills and concerns over lasting health effects.

The child’s father, known as Mr M, said the incident occurred on 1 July when a group of family and friends gathered at their Chiang Mai residence to celebrate a birthday. Among the guests was a close friend of the girl’s uncle, a social media personality from Lampang, who had brought cannabis-laced gummy bears to the party but forgot to take them home.

The gummies, coloured and bear-shaped, were mistaken by the young girl for regular sweets. According to the family, the toddler consumed at least 10 pieces, while her grandmother unknowingly ate two, resulting in drowsiness and disorientation.

The following day, the toddler, who was attending a nursery, became sleepy and could not be awakened by her teachers. Alarmed, they contacted the family and the child’s uncle rushed her to a private hospital in Chiang Mai for emergency treatment.

Initial tests did not determine the cause of the symptoms. It was only after questioning guests from the birthday party that the truth emerged. The male guest admitted to leaving the cannabis gummies behind, though he offered only a verbal apology and has not taken responsibility for the consequences.

The girl remained in hospital for two nights. Although she was discharged, her condition worsened later that evening, requiring readmission due to a high fever and auditory hallucinations. Doctors conducted further tests as her symptoms persisted, including hearing voices and low-grade fever.

Mr M has since filed a police report at Hang Dong Police Station and submitted the remaining gummies for testing to determine if they exceeded legal limits for THC content. The family has also incurred nearly 60,000 baht in medical expenses, costs not covered by their insurance, which cited the cause of illness as drug-related.

“This should never have happened inside our own home, the one place a child should be safe,” Mr M said. “We’ve lost income, peace of mind, and most of all, we worry about the long-term impact on our daughter’s health.”

He also expressed frustration over lax enforcement of cannabis regulations and called on the government to take urgent action to control the use of cannabis in food products. “Many of these items have no proper labelling or are only labelled in English. A two-year-old can’t read warning labels. She thought they were just sweets,” he said.

Mr M stressed that he is considering pursuing legal action against the individual who brought the gummies to their home. He hopes their story serves as a warning to other parents and a wake-up call for policymakers.

“I want what happened to my daughter to be the last time this occurs to any child,” he said.

And this is the reason Cannabis should be made illegal again. There are a lot of irresponsible people in Thailand. Poor kid.

Yes, when you say something like that, there are always angry, but time and again it turns out it is not so innocent after all.

Yes and leave the child an orphan on top of everything else. Brilliant idea.

I would like to know where the gummies are from. My experience with gummies is, I can eat a bag and feel nothing, not even a sugar rush.

This doesn't sound true. Accidental poisonings if caused by a drug aren't covered by their insurance plan?

Think they've got their priorities the wrong way around, but then again?🤔

The idiots should have made sure the kid couldn't get near them in the first place.

Edibles destroy me. Someone who I no longer call a friend once gave me a cookie while they were cutting my hair that left me unable to work for three days of hell.

Hope the little one's ok but let's not go down the road of demonizing dope. This is down to carelessness. Not mentioned in the article but I'd bet my left nut on copious amounts of alcohol also being consumed at that party.

I'm guessing that you're an adult though, and probably have something of a tolerance for cannabis. This was a two year old - so little more than a baby, really.

Im guessing they have never eaten a genuine, THC-heavy edible. You wait an exceedingly long time and then just as you think you got some duds, they hit like a freight train,

It has been known for children to drink stain cleaning fluid and die, yet nobody wants a ban on stain cleaning fluid. I wonder why that is. Maybe because in the case of the stain cleaning fluid, they CAN stand the smell?

Local homemade gummies in a tin of 40. THC was 2.5mg per piece so pretty mild, but she had 10 of them, and at the age of two she'd not weigh much more than 10kg.

Yea, what exactly are you trying to say there?

It's just careless and really stupid to put such a powerful hallucinogen into candy. Another really good reason to outlaw weed again in Thailand. Too many irresponsible high flyers getting loaded and not taking care of their children.

Poor child

most kids like eat things that taste good don't you know?

Candy is mostly marketed to kids. Let's be serious shall we?

I would let go of your love of weed. I sure hope it's not an addiction. Addicts will do most anything to keep their dope easily available.
