Yes. At 50, single dad with four kids,  I really had my heart set on marrying a per-menopausal, overweight mother of three......but as they kept knocking me back I had to settle for a 23 year old Thai

Whether it’s due to age, appearance

Crikey, walk down soi Buakhao on any day.

Full of loser foreigners, most with a serious health condition, disability or worse.

Can't get a woman back home.

Exactly. One of the reasons I relocated. Im too old to be lurking there all the time and for old guys getting around, the Big Swamp gets tiresome. The government is a joke and their immigration system is a pain and the ass, crazy enough to have a dedicated forum! And then the air sucks. And Ive seen all the temples. And transport in the boonies is a pain, and Im not going to Pattaya

Thats the beauty of Siem Reap. Compact. Land of the dollar store. Pay your fee once a year and see you. No worse infrastructure wise than Ubon or Lopburi. Want to go somewhere, Hit the button, dude shows up in a remork, $1.  Cambodia/Thailand is the perfect combo. Siem is a very cosmopolitan place because of the extreme tourism and there are tons of non perverted things to do, especially if you like to sit in front of an ancient ruin with a smoothie and watch the world while your driver snoozes in a hammock. For gutter crawlers like myself who can still unmedicated make a girl fake one, you can snag one in the Barang Ghetto. And the backpacker chicks...OMG. No shame. But of course, one does want to hit Suk once in a while....

Time wise from my door to Ruamchitt, 6 hours by air. That includes travel to airports. If go road/rail, 9 hours.

If you analogize, NYC would be the only thing in Bangkoks class. 6 hours by car is Vermont or Virginia Beach. Old man can live in Virginia Beach, or Myrtyle Beach or Burlington Vermont and drive to NYC for the big city itch.

When I see the losers trying to use Cambodia as an insult I laugh. Those who know, know. If you go back to Thermae 1, you know. They probably cant afford it,

When I first saw those beer bars down by the tracks (Soi 0) I thought I had died and gone to heaven. And I could drink then too!!!!

I just moved out of Siem Reap back to Pattaya. I was so happy getting the 5 year DTV visa.

I can be a strange guy, but I felt like I was "dying" in Cambodia. I just felt lost and so "drained" by the needy energy of the people. I'm so happy to be outta there. I really turned negative there this time.

I remember a clip of a rock star who visited Pattaya many years ago. He did not think much of it because he was already living that lifestyle in his home country. Sure, he probably liked the visit but it was not a place he would come back to or move to.

One can get women anywhere if you are wealthy. It has very little to do with being in Thailand. Most expats come to Thailand for the increased spending power. With that comes increased availability of women.

I swear I sorta remember that  ....maybe. I want to say US rockstar but something in me says nah British. But I think American. I might have been living there at the time half on half off

I think I recall Oliver Stone visiting Pattaya.

Adding to a lot of the comments, I would have to say that is was also because of the marriage laws in Australia.  After being divorced and financially rap** in my late-40s I vowed to never be in that situation again. Over the years I have known a lot of blokes that got divorced and then re-married - and except for one bloke, they were all divorced again within 5-10 years and financially rap** again. So I saved up my money and looked after the kids and then retired early and looked where to retire overseas. Decided Thailand after visiting most of them and after a few years met a lovely Thai lady - best decision of my life.  But if it was a bad decision I could have walked away with all my money - 10 years coming up - happy as the proverbial pig.  Love the people - hate the Government.

I would guess most senior men move here for two reasons.  Get far away from  their X and the younger ladies.

It was Tommy Lee from Motley Crue many years ago. The clip is still on YTube.

What struck me as strange about it was Pattaya seems like the kind of place he and the band would like.

You missed nothing. It was a dirty dump under the freeway. I refused to go there at the time.

Cambodia was crazy in the early 90s. There weren't any limits on anything. It was barely a country. If you fell there wasn't anyone to pick you up. It's true here and now too - but there and then...there was a loooong way to fall.

Most foreigners were terrified of the place. Cambodia only saw real opening in tourism backpacking in 96-2000

I love the Khmer people, but I'm glad Made it out alive.

Cambodia is a complete dump. I'm sure you feel much better after leaving.

I dont call is desperation, I call it excessive obsequiousness and lack of confidence, as well as the inherent strangeness (to us) of their social relationships. Its easier if you were in Thailand in the old days, before they all started getting credit.

Its like a cruise, we are just passengers and ya like it or you dont. I think the food sucks, maybe because its mostly tourist focused and Khmer food is not very hearty and replete with bugs and frogs.

But the buffets at the Sheraton and Westin in BKK are excellent.

ProTip: Eating bugs doesnt impress City SE Asian girls who arent right off the farm

Aw c'mon. Half dozen times for me perhaps. It was a often a good place to start the night. No rules. I found if I popped in too late the crowd was a bit too unsavory. Not in a good way like old Thermae.

It wasn't the grubbiness for me, but the location underpass. Then again, I was living in Cambodia at the time and did 8 months on Indian subcontinent. Maybe my standards were fuzzy at the time

Loads of other real epic places back then. It was a dump and only good for slumming

For me, it was actually them being too nice.

The best description I can give would be:

Have you ever had a dog who was "too nice", kind of followed you around the house, just behind your leg so you knew it was there, but still not touching you or bothering you in an obvious way. Yet, it being there bothers you somehow because it's always there for some reason and you sometimes want to kick it away or just want it to go away, but you're not sure why it irritates you. 🤣

That's the situation I felt. Just too much attention because people see in me something they want, or just are focusing on me at all in the same kind of happy manner, which seemed pitiful after a time, especially from other men, though I can understand how some people may view it as simply friendly.

Thats their culture. Almost as "nice" in certain ways as Japan

Do you understand the part about the dog and wanting to kick it?

There were some fun bars down there

Is it true that foreign men often move to Thailand because they “can’t get women” in their own countries? Whether it’s due to age, appearance, income, personality, or just bad luck, it seems some might come here to reset that playing field.

Many of this men do think so.

But the truth is a young man without money and career - he is equally uninteresting to women both in Thailand and elsewhere.
Then this man went to Thailand and money appeared in his pocket.
And then he see a lot of interested women.

The truth is that if the man had not left, he would have seen exactly the same number of interested women in his country.

The exception, of course, is pensioners with 20-year-old Thai beauties. This kind of pure love can only be found in Thailand.

Sure, I would never want to kick a dog unless it attacked so we have different personalities.

Am married to a whitey.... 20yrs now.

Only reason why we still married is the move to Thailand... she has a Thai GF that takes care of her needs.... the same GF takes care of my needs.

Play together, stay together.

You couldn't get a woman back home. That was his point. 30 years ago is 30 years ago.

A lot of foreign men move to Thailand at least partly because the only women that they have a chance of being with back home are women their own age. Why would you want to be with a bossy, nosy, difficult 65 or 70 year old woman, if you do not have to? No thanks. Life is too short for that.

These ladies are attractive for their age but I get your point.  I want a wife that I love waking to up each morning. Shallow and a little unfair but just how it is...  I hope none of them see this post.
