Search for survivors after Houthis sink second Red Sea cargo ship in a week

Ten crew members have been rescued and at least three others killed after a cargo ship was attacked by Yemen's Houthis and sank in the Red Sea, a European naval mission says.

The Liberian-flagged, Greek-operated Eternity C was carrying 25 crew when it sustained significant damage and lost all propulsion after being hit by rocket-propelled grenades fired from small boats on Monday, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency.

The attack continued on Tuesday and search rescue operations commenced overnight.

Two Ships Desperately Tried to Fight Off Houthi Attacks. Help Never Arrived.

For more than 48 hours, two merchant ships in the Red Sea tried to fight off repeated attacks by Houthi fighters who used rocket-propelled grenades, missiles and drones to sink them both, kill at least three crew members and take others hostage. No U.S. or allied warship was around to help.

An officer at Cosmoship Management, operator of the Eternity C, one of the vessels that was attacked, said he desperately tried to get assistance from the British navy and a European naval task force as the fight unfolded. He said he was told there were no ships in the area.

This is a problem that should be addressed by those most affected: nations in the region and Europe. The US should stay out of it. A few months back, President Trump wisely reached an  agreement with the Houthis that specified that Americans wouldn't attack the Houthis if the Houthis left American ships alone.

Looks like the Houthis still have some of those Iranian Bidenbucks left.

I don't care who is responsible. I just don't want President Trump to get the US involved. He did a very wise thing by coming to a mutual non-aggression agreement with the Houthis without including Israel or other countries in the deal.

Which agreement was that? Was it the free for all to attack cargo ships?

On May 6, 2025, a ceasefire deal between the United States and the Houthi movement in Yemen—brokered by Oman—took hold, ending the March–May 2025 United States attacks in Yemen, as well as the wider US–UK airstrikes on Yemen since the beginning of the Red Sea crisis. The Houthis agreed to halt their attacks on US vessels but otherwise would continue their attacks on vessels in the Red Sea[3] and emphasized that the ceasefire did not in "any way, shape, or form" apply to Israel, which had begun launching its own strikes on Yemen.[4]

But, but, but.....trump stated:-

"A little over two months ago, Donald Trump was emphatic in claiming to have halted Houthi militants’ attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

“[The Houthis] just don’t want to fight, and we will honour that and we will stop the bombings, and they have capitulated,” he said on May 6. “They say they will not be blowing up ships any more.

Despite Trump’s confidence, this week the Houthis have sunk two vessels in quick succession on the critical shipping route and shattered months of relative calm off Yemen’s coast".

They agreed not to attack American ships and they haven't.  Greek operated, Liberian flagged ships are someone else's problem.  Let the Greeks or the Liberians defend them.

The rest of the world are getting their wish.  America is no longer the World Police under Trump.  They should have thought about what they were wishing for.

From the BBC article :

The Iran-backed Houthis said they attacked the Eternity C because it was heading to Israel, and that they took an unspecified number of crew to a "safe location".

It is the second vessel the Houthis have sunk in a week, after the group on Sunday launched missiles and drones at another Liberian-flagged, Greek-operated cargo ship, Magic Seas, which they claimed "belong[ed] to a company that violated the entry ban to the ports of occupied Palestine".

Two LEGITIMATE targets for the Yemen army.

Read trump's statement again:- They say they will not be blowing up ships any more".

He did NOT specify which nationality, but then again he often talks gibberish. By the way, nice try at deflection with your response.

Anserallah (Houtis) have been up-front with their demands.

Lift the siege on Gaza and allow a free-flow of aid to the Gazan Palestinians and Anserallah will lift the Red Sea embargo.  When Israel honored a ceasefire in Gaza, the Yemeni blockade in the Red Sea ended.  When the ceasefire ended and Israel reimplemented the blockade of aid to Gaza, Anserallah reimplemented the Red Sea blockade.  Just like that.

Bibi visited the White House recently and the last I heard as of yesterday is that the US will resume bombing Yemen.  But I haven't seen any activity to date.  Guess we'll see.

When the American President is discussing an agreement to not attack American ships, in the context of an America First agenda, the "American" is implied.

Let the Greeks or the Liberians defend their revenue stream.

I'd bet the insurance company isn't even American...  Maybe Lloyd's should get the Royal Navy on the case...

Hopefully the Chinese bring them airdefence systems like they are flying to Tehran

the last weeks.

It will be a good test and learning experience for the latest Chinese airdefence against F35's.

Nice try, but he specifically said, They say they will not be blowing up ships any more, can't be much clearer than that!

That's why we should be staying out of there. Our interventions bring nothing but misery.

Lack of action speaks louder than words. The Houthis have attacked 2 ships and President Trump has wisely refrained from taking any action.

Do the Houthis know exactly what is on the ships they blow up, no, could be something YOU ordered from somewhere, or I ordered, or food stuffs that you eat, or even fuel for your car, so yes, "our goods"....🤗

First off, most of the shipping there is for Europe, other Mediterranean countries including Israel, and the region. So it's mostly for non Americans. Why should America have to play policeman here? If the countries most affected have a problem, let them deal with it. The Gulf States have certainly purchased enough weaponry from the US and others. Why should the USA keep coddling the Gulf States, the EU and other affected countries? Why does it have to be US taxpayers who foot the bill?

I believe the UK RAF was involved with dealing with the Houthis.....🤭

Your USA has military stuff/bases everywhere, your USA even wants to buy Greenland, take over Canada.

They even are messing around off the coast of China, and you ask why should your taxes pay for safeguarding shipping from "Iran".............🤣
