The fact that he is ex-military probably has more to do with it than being a teacher.

 

As far as I've gathered, the military is tough on people's mental health and a lot of these guys carry PTSD with them for the rest of their lives. 

 

He's probably lucky he wasn't in Phuket.  Bouncers there don't seem as nice.
