Sadly not.  These mentally ill Thai apologist types actually get off on seeing other foreigners being attacked.  In their broken minds, the foreigners being attacked are "bad foreigners" and the Thais doing the attacking are good and smart, as they figured out that the foreigners are bad.  The deluded foreigner thinks they won't get attacked, because they are one of the rare "good foreigners" and Thais know this and wouldn't attack them.

Utterly shameful.... and they wonder why tourists are beginning to give Thailand a miss.

It's really sad.  Unless they do something, Thailand is just going to get worse and worse.  I guess those that are peddling the "foreigners are the real problem, stop looking at what the government is doing" line don't care about tousim.

9 really tough guys who would have each gotten the you know what kicked out of them if they tried mano y mano.

Definitely can and does happen Philippines often for no reason other than pent up jealousy

Stay out of local beer bars with local men. Don't drink with them, don't buy them drinks, don't fraternize

OK, I imagine it can happen in Phils (though I've never been there). But any others?

This old chestnut hasn't popped up for a while. It is even the same road!

9-10 locals vs. 1 western tourist is something that only happens in Thailand. It's a Thai thing. Never even happens in Cambodia, China, Vietnam...it's only in Thailand. Just below the surface, Thais absolutely hate farangs. Take your money elsewhere.

Ridiculous comment , They generally do not "absolutely hate farangs"  and those working in such dubious establishments are hardly representative of the general population

Are you suggesting that ganging up with 9 was actually a smart move on their part, in order to avoid injury,

No, just that they are so tough they needed to gang up on hi because they would have received a good wooping in a 1 on 1 fight.

I've been warned on numerous occasions to stay away from these karaoke joints, unless I'm with a Thai person who can negotiate the hazards of these places. They are Infamous for overcharging and I think the minute they see a foreigner the bells go off in their heads. Granted, there's no excuse for this kind of an attack, but I can understand why the disagreement happened in the first place.

I really dislike karaoke to begin with, so there was never a chance of something like this happening for me. I think I would much rather watch paint dry, and maybe I would even prefer to do hard labor, than sit around listening to karaoke.

So he was attacked during daylight hours. 20,000 could be possible after a early morning start.🙃🙃

The news report that I read said that the establishment forced to close as they do not have a license, and they were serving alcohol past legal hours.  They never have a license though, do they?

Illegal establishment busted and finished off by this case.

By one visitor's  "noble" sacrifice?

of course they would come off worse in a 1 on 1 situation , but I doubt a 1 on 1 fist fight with a guy twice their size is part of their job description, However I am not condoning what happened

Taking his clothes off is concerning. In the wild, an alpha male will sometimes "violate" their rival with more then just kicking, while the pack looks on.

so he should consider him self lucky not to have been bummed as well ?

Rare actually. Often get undercharged.

Where is your sense of humor, lol.

Thailand. No such thing as a fair fight here.  It’ll never be one on one.  More than likely because they always lose. The disputes are usually over a barbell was most likely overcharged.

Ripping off tourists seems to be a kind of sport in Thailand:coffee1:

I guess this is how they can afford to pay all these useless so called security staff who are all built like 14 year old kids !!

In Chiang Mai, tensions escalated yesterday as nine karaoke bar workers were arrested for assaulting a British tourist following a dispute over alleged overcharging.

The Mueang Chiang Mai Police responded after a viral video showed several individuals attacking a foreign man outside an entertainment venue. The video, widely circulated on Thai social media, depicted the attackers forcibly restraining the man, identified as 27-year-old Cameron James Wilkins, preventing any retaliation while they searched him for valuables.

The incident began at a karaoke bar on Sri Don Chai Road in the bustling Chang Khlan area. Police confirmed that Wilkins had filed a complaint alleging excessive charges for services rendered at the venue. Reports indicate he received a bill of approximately 20,000 Thai Baht but refused to pay, claiming overcharging. This led to a heated argument with the staff that spiralled into violence as he left the premises.

Upon arrest, the suspects claimed that Wilkins' refusal to settle the bill triggered the altercation. The group, comprising eight men and one woman, were identified as:

  • Teerasak, 24
  • Siladon, 20
  • Narong, 28
  • Apichart, 22
  • Adisarn, 22
  • Sakda, 22
  • Sakda, 18
  • Worrapoj, 23
  • Somsri, 28

The venue appeared closed when reporters visited later in the day. Attempts to reach management were futile as the bar provided no public contact information.

Local residents disclosed that the karaoke bar recently changed ownership and attracted a primarily foreign clientele, often brought in by taxi or baht bus drivers. Neighbours suspected the bar had arrangements with drivers, providing commissions for delivering customers.

Allegations emerged suggesting frequent police visits due to conflicts over pricing, a recurring issue between staff and patrons. Despite multiple complaints of inflated prices, officials have yet to confirm whether they will investigate these claims further.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns over pricing practices and customer safety in entertainment venues catering to tourists. The police have pledged to review the case thoroughly, ensuring justice for those affected and potentially addressing systemic issues in tourism-centric areas.

Never visit a Karaoki bar in Chiang Mai. The greedy owners are renowned for outrageously ripping off farang. Even though the few girlie bars there are overpriced with surly women, it's best to stick to them. If you're looking for entertainment, visit Pattaya.

Nothing good ever came out of visiting a Chiang Mai karaoke bar.

Nothing good has come out of a karioke bar anyware in Thailand or after 2am.

maybe  but the bill for a single drink can only be inflated so much if paid immediately , a bill for 10 drinks paid at the end of the night is far more likely to be loaded up,   Hardly rocket science

???

It depends on how hard core the scam is. Someone could beat and rob you in the bathroom without buying anything and demand money.

Paying as you go probably does not matter much in a sketchy karaoke venue, unless you just want to put them on notice that you are not an easy target. If they want to get you, there is always a way.

Paying for each drink at a time is more likely due to your belief that the scams are billing mistakes or misunderstandings (or something you actually ordered but don't remember).

Personally I would not consider being beaten up and robbed in a bathroom a "scam"  that is a mugging  by anybody's standard

Paying as you go , especially in a place like this is the ONLY form of damage limitation available, you order your drink and  receive the bill immediately , if its over priced or loaded in any way  then the sensible option of paying up and leaving without causing a fuss is immediately an option and probably not too painful financially.

The other option of paying at the end of the night is nothing short of madness, leaving yourself wide open  and giving them the opportunity to repeat the scam 10 fold.   You could still pay up and walk away ,  but in reality and after having had a few too many , a lot of people are far less likely to just accept it and go quietly due to the amount involved,  Either way the consequences  are going to be far more painful as seen above

As a Brit the whole concept of running up a "bar bill" makes me uncomfortable , its plain weird.  Especially when frequenting places of a dubious nature. No bar or pub in the UK operates on such a basis and as such the problem is completely avoided,  Not that we don't have enough already
