  • Got to laugh Nine on to one. Sounds about right.    Over charging, nah. never in Thailand.

  • The video is described as "depicted the attackers forcibly restraining the man, identified as 27-year-old Cameron James Wilkins, preventing any retaliation while they searched him for valuables".

  • Another gullible naive tourist

the word "like" is neither appropriate, accurate or required ,  just    "  Monkeys"   would have been better possibly preceded by the expletive of your choice

9-10 locals vs. 1 western tourist is something that only happens in Thailand. It's a Thai thing. Never even happens in Cambodia, China, Vietnam...it's only in Thailand. Just below the surface, Thais absolutely hate farangs. Take your money elsewhere.

When you see a lot of smiles you don't deserve, it means someone is hiding something.

Personally I would not consider being beaten up and robbed in a bathroom a "scam"  that is a mugging  by anybody's standard

Paying as you go , especially in a place like this is the ONLY form of damage limitation available, you order your drink and  receive the bill immediately , if its over priced or loaded in any way  then the sensible option of paying up and leaving without causing a fuss is immediately an option and probably not too painful financially.

The other option of paying at the end of the night is nothing short of madness, leaving yourself wide open  and giving them the opportunity to repeat the scam 10 fold.   You could still pay up and walk away ,  but in reality and after having had a few too many , a lot of people are far less likely to just accept it and go quietly due to the amount involved,  Either way the consequences  are going to be far more painful as seen above

As a Brit the whole concept of running up a "bar bill" makes me uncomfortable , its plain weird.  Especially when frequenting places of a dubious nature. No bar or pub in the UK operates on such a basis and as such the problem is completely avoided,  Not that we don't have enough already

Ok I agree, paying as you go is better then a running bill and better then doing nothing. It also makes a lot of sense for guys that order drinks without looking at a menu first.

It's surprising how common that is. You walk in, the barback asks what will you have, and you feel obligated to order immediately. You assume a beer could be 100 baht, but it could actually be anything they want if there is no printed menu when you pay.

Do you find it un-manly to ask for or need a menu before ordering a drink?

Thank you.. You have expressed yourself LIKE a true teacher. I’m not a native English speaker but, I’m sure that the intention of my words has been clear for your understanding and for the forum. 🐒 👍

100% the halfwit poster I replied to. Takes every opportunity to  blindly have a pop at the Brits.

Agreed,

especially regarding his suggestion that the guy should have asked the price up front ,  They would not have revealed their scam on request lol    I don't think that poster has any friends and I doubt he gets out much, so he's well out of his depth commenting here

I wasn't criticising you, and to be honest I would never have guessed that you were not a native speaker, your english is probably better than mine, But then again I am from liverpool

I was just adding a bit of emphasis to your description       no worries

In 2009........That's 16 SIXTEEN years ago, we all knew this scam.   But tourists have no time to check every scam before they travel, and why search for something negative?   I remember around 2019 a Thai friend told me Karaoke is fine if you are in the right province.  I said, I don't care.....it's a scam in Chiang Mai and that's enough.  It's probably the same 'ol scam.  you walk in, buy ONE drink and they charge for music and drinks for all.  if you don't pay, they beat you up.   I have a feeling they really want to beat you up.  lol.

Nobody under 80 is reading this.....but maybe you have to Google your intention with "scam" in it.  example:  you want to jet ski in Pattaya.   Google "Pattaya Jet Ski Scam"

it was interesting (not really) how the best looking girls were in front of the karaoke shops back in the day.   Red Flag number 9208742930847308942743842374.    I'm not a Brit, I don't fall for this garbage.  lol

I disagree. Back in 2003 ahead of  my first visit I bought what was called a 'Lonely Planet'.

It was all in there in the 3rd or 4th chapter long before serious Internet and Facebook, Thai Visa.com etc. Long before I even set my first foot down on the ground in Don Muang airport I knew about K-bars which is why I've never been in one.

(LP also told me about the bridge across to the railway, where I took the train to Ayuthaya for 9 baht. Spent 3 days there marveling at night markets, boat trips, temples, elephants and dragon boat races with a side trip to Lop Buri. An absolutely enchanting way to enter Thailand - probably still is for newbies. Then I moved on to CM for 3 weeks where I didn't scud around K-bars.)

Anyway to try leaving any venue without paying is asking for a good kicking. Call the police who will at least help you 'negotiate' the price down. But pay you must.

20.000 Baht ??? image.gif.91cbe57f2fa6bd6719fa348924cdcbe3.gif

According to a friend, with this amount in Bangkok, you can drink 10 beers, offer 5 lady drinks, pay 1 bar fine and pay the intimate service of a sexy bar-girl in a "short-time" hotel room before taking a taxi to come back to your home and have a good diner with your wife . . .

It really doesn’t; even a lot of the small, <deleted>ty poor man’s roadside karaokes.
Can’t believe this is still a thing-been decades of weekly stories like this.
One would be hard pressed to run up a tab that high in a Tokyo hostess karaoke bar.

And the Police is on their payroll !!

The police have pledged to review the case thoroughly, ensuring justice for those affected and potentially addressing systemic issues in tourism-centric areas. ???

These bars and the fact the police unbelievably cannot arrest anyone, is typical of the corruption when the RTP are involved.

A close friend of mine who owned a bar in Pattaya, Beach Rd near Walking Street once said to me the RTP is the biggest mafia in the world,  inferring almost all the RTP in Thailand. After he told me several stories about the RTP, with regards to his bar only, I was convinced.

In Chiang Mai, tensions escalated yesterday as nine karaoke bar workers were arrested for assaulting a British tourist following a dispute over alleged overcharging.

The Mueang Chiang Mai Police responded after a viral video showed several individuals attacking a foreign man outside an entertainment venue. The video, widely circulated on Thai social media, depicted the attackers forcibly restraining the man, identified as 27-year-old Cameron James Wilkins, preventing any retaliation while they searched him for valuables.

The incident began at a karaoke bar on Sri Don Chai Road in the bustling Chang Khlan area. Police confirmed that Wilkins had filed a complaint alleging excessive charges for services rendered at the venue. Reports indicate he received a bill of approximately 20,000 Thai Baht but refused to pay, claiming overcharging. This led to a heated argument with the staff that spiralled into violence as he left the premises.

Upon arrest, the suspects claimed that Wilkins' refusal to settle the bill triggered the altercation. The group, comprising eight men and one woman, were identified as:

  • Teerasak, 24
  • Siladon, 20
  • Narong, 28
  • Apichart, 22
  • Adisarn, 22
  • Sakda, 22
  • Sakda, 18
  • Worrapoj, 23
  • Somsri, 28

The venue appeared closed when reporters visited later in the day. Attempts to reach management were futile as the bar provided no public contact information.

Local residents disclosed that the karaoke bar recently changed ownership and attracted a primarily foreign clientele, often brought in by taxi or baht bus drivers. Neighbours suspected the bar had arrangements with drivers, providing commissions for delivering customers.

Allegations emerged suggesting frequent police visits due to conflicts over pricing, a recurring issue between staff and patrons. Despite multiple complaints of inflated prices, officials have yet to confirm whether they will investigate these claims further.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns over pricing practices and customer safety in entertainment venues catering to tourists. The police have pledged to review the case thoroughly, ensuring justice for those affected and potentially addressing systemic issues in tourism-centric areas.

I remember my first trip to chang mai i was warned by the hotel mananger to never step foot in the karaoke bars. Full of scammers who wii pad your bill.

So, many people here are suggesting that a 50-kilogram Somchai should settle an unpaid debt issue in a one-on-one fistfight with a drunk sailor from Bristol? In my opinion, the Thai tactic is more than reasonable — gang up on the troublemaker as a community and thereby minimize any unwanted consequences for everyone (except the drunk foreigner).

Time for payback round up a Posse and kick the crap out of these thugs. Hope the scumbags are forced to pay the medical bill along with the compo and fines.

Go alone to a karaoke in a foreign country where you don't speak the local aboriginal language. Walk by the front door, see a daisy showing her crotch, gonna have a good day, get drunk, large bill shows up, fight, beat up by aboriginals, police, mad back home.

If there have been multiple complaints then why the hell is the place still running. Shut it down. And charge the staff for robbery, not just excessive charging.

I've been warned on numerous occasions to stay away from these karaoke joints, unless I'm with a Thai person who can negotiate the hazards of these places. They are Infamous for overcharging and I think the minute they see a foreigner the bells go off in their heads. Granted, there's no excuse for this kind of an attack, but I can understand why the disagreement happened in the first place.

I really dislike karaoke to begin with, so there was never a chance of something like this happening for me. I think I would much rather watch paint dry, and maybe I would even prefer to do hard labor, than sit around listening to karaoke.

I hate karaoke too.The sound of middle age women screaming 'I will Survive' .No thanks.
