Immigration authorities have arrested a 22-year-old French national believed to be a key member of an international drug trafficking syndicate. The suspect, identified only as Mr Bachir, was detained after allegedly fleeing law enforcement in France and attempting to hide in Phuket.

Phuket Immigration confirmed on the 25 July that the arrest was the result of coordinated efforts between Thailand’s Immigration Bureau, the Royal Thai Police and the French Embassy. French authorities had issued a warrant for Mr Bachir on charges of possessing illegal narcotics and trafficking. Intelligence reports indicated that he had entered Thailand covertly and was residing on Phuket in an effort to avoid capture.

Following a period of surveillance, immigration officers successfully apprehended the suspect. During questioning, Mr Bachir reportedly admitted to acting as a courier, smuggling drugs and distributing them to clients in France.

Mr Bachir remains in custody while extradition proceedings are being arranged in collaboration with French officials.
