In a major diplomatic breakthrough, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire to end days of intense border clashes, following a high-level meeting in the Malaysian capital. The ceasefire is set to take effect at midnight on the 28 July .

The talks, held at the official residence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya, were convened under his leadership as ASEAN Chair and brought together Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, along with their respective delegations.

Also in attendance were the U.S. and Chinese ambassadors to Malaysia, underscoring the international concern over the escalating violence that had resulted in large-scale displacement on both sides of the Thai-Cambodian border.

Ceasefire Declared Without Preconditions

At a joint press briefing after the talks, Prime Minister Anwar praised both leaders for their commitment to peace, describing the outcome as a “critical first step toward de-escalation and the restoration of regional stability.”

“Both Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a complete and unconditional ceasefire, effective from midnight local time,” Anwar confirmed. “This marks an essential milestone in reducing tensions and creating a path to sustainable peace.”

Prime Minister Hun Manet echoed the sentiment, calling the discussions “very constructive,” and emphasised the urgency of halting hostilities. He noted that the conflict had already displaced approximately 300,000 people across the two nations.

He extended his thanks to Prime Minister Anwar for facilitating the talks, and also acknowledged the role of U.S. President Donald Trump and the Chinese government for supporting mediation efforts. He further expressed appreciation to Phumtham for his “constructive engagement” throughout the negotiation process.

Follow-Up Military and Diplomatic Meetings Planned

To support the ceasefire implementation, Anwar announced that military commanders from both countries will hold an informal meeting at 07:00 on Tuesday, 29 July. A more formal gathering, led by ASEAN’s defence attachés, is scheduled for 4 August.

Hun Manet voiced optimism that the ceasefire would pave the way for hundreds of thousands of displaced citizens to return to normal life. “It is time to rebuild trust and confidence between Cambodia and Thailand,” he said.

I hate Trump....but it feels refreshing, not toxic knowing I can join the ranks of those who hate fascist bigotry, who, unlike Trump, have an IQ higher than 50.

Yes I haven't lived there for quite a while so I don't still keep up with the news. 20'ish years ago they had a big dispute over the Preah Vihear Temple area.

We avoid that like the plague. We use the office in the Surin Central Admin building near Robinson.

What is it about the Kap Choeng I.O. that you don't like ? I use it regularly for my 90 day reporting . Easy going staff and sometimes we have a laugh . In and out of there in 10 minutes .

BTW that bombing in Prasat was really scary . Also the Thai missile launchers made our place shake .

Twas not always thus. Back in the old small building (before the new one was completed) there used to be an unpleasant guy always with his hand out for a bribe. Quite blatant too. After that there was a boss woman for a while who similarly announced that my renewal application would take several days because the big boss was away, but if I paid a 'special fee' I could get it done today. I smiled politely and said nothing then paced up & down for 3 hours outside her window till she finally came out smiling sweetly & showed me my stamped p/p. She was obviously expecting my brown envelope. So my b/f & I took the p/p, waied her politely & walked swiftly to our car.

Yes, last October we went there to the nice new office & found the staff pleasant but a long wait as there were many there before us ... So it's there in future if we choose but the Provincial Govt office is close to Robinsons so easier for us to go there then on to Robinsons for a feed, Tops & Starbucks for a coffee & several bundles of coffee beans. Plus the big & cheap pharmacy in Muaeng Surin as required ...

Thai ownership of a Cambodian casino is just one of many non-Cambodians holding several casino interests there. Malaysian, Taiwanese and Indonesians are all openly involved with the Chinese interests, mainly away from the borders in Sihanoukville.

Thaksin's idea of opening casinos on the Thai side of the border faced considerable resistance here in Thailand. Maybe it was a quid-pro-quo deal with Hun Sen where if Thaksin got the languishing offshore exploration memorandum of understanding (MoU) reactivated, the 'rival' border casinos could then work side-by-side. Unfortunately, the nationalists squashed any notion of taking the MoU any further. So maybe Hun Sen saw this deal, and his promise to the Cambodians, being undone, spat the dummy and here we are.

Cambodia has never claimed Koh Kood. That's disinformation churned out by the nationalists several months back when Pheu Thai suggested moving forward on the old MoU for the overlapping claims area (OCA) that's way further offshore than the island. The Cambodians went on public record denying this false claim by the Thai nationalists.

You dont have to look far behind any war in the world to see the US trying to, or having installed a puppet government.  Its their go to war tactic.

They are trying to destabilise a region that has been generally stable for a while.

They hate the fact that SE Asia is doing so well without them.  They also hate anyone that is mates with China and their belt and road initiative.

They are terrorists, war criminals and absolutely don't give a shiiit about anyone but themselves.

Thailand and Cambodia will sort this out.

The Trump rubbish only led to an inevitable breaking of the cease fire, as did the Asean negotiated one...Which, by the way, the US attended...?? Why??? Last time I checked they weren't in Asia.

C'mon all you Trumpers that even Trump himself rubbishes now he doesn't need you.... give me your best...

Taco had nothing to do with it, in fact the Thai acting PM basically gave him the middle finger.

Did i miss something from prior news here? Why is the acting Prime minister, there?

Where is Thaksin's daughter MS  Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Why is she not there shaking hands in such a very important diplomatic situation?  Like for goodness sake it's a big issue! I must have missed the news from Thailand too much lately. Can someone please explain?

You made my point. Maybe they weren't 'behloden' to the previous one either. In fact maybe they are running their own scheme..from the get go.

wrong: boy are u misinformed!!

BIG money involved in concessions for oil exploration around the Island and many believe this is what caused the falling out between Thaksin and hun sen

here's some links to prove it
https://www.dw.com/en/why-are-thailand-and-cambodia-clashing-over-koh-kood-island/a-71212061

"The island is believed to be sitting atop massive gas and oil reserves. Its exploitation has been on hold due to Cambodia claiming parts of the territory, but now, with the growing demand for energy in both Asian countries, the conflict has been pushed to forefront."

https://thediplomat.com/2025/04/the-thai-resort-island-at-the-center-of-a-simmering-territorial-dispute-with-cambodia/

The resumption of maritime boundary negotiations between Bangkok and Phnom Penh has revived a dormant sovereignty dispute over Koh Kood

Hun Manet, the prime minister of Cambodia, recently waded into the debate, publicly stating that its claims over Koh Kood, which is referred to as Koh Kuch in Khmer, had not yet been lost.

The disagreement over Koh Kood dates back to the era of French colonial rule in Indochina. In 1904, Thailand, then called Siam, ceded the island to France, along with the nearby port of Trat and other adjacent islands. In the Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907, these territories were then retroceded to Siam in exchange for large territories in western Cambodia.

However, Cambodia has never fully accepted Thai sovereignty over Koh Kood. In 1972, Phnom Penh released an official map and normalized its continental shelf with a decree that asserted a claim over the southern part of Koh Kood.

another one
https://pressxpress.org/2025/01/05/why-is-cambodia-pressing-thailand-over-koh-kood/

As Thailand and Cambodia reignite diplomatic tensions over the island of Koh Kood, Cambodia is pressing its case on historical grounds, arguing that its territorial claims were marginalized during the colonial era. Beyond sovereignty, the dispute highlights deeper questions of historical justice and energy equity in Southeast Asia.

The island, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is suspected to sit atop vast reserves of natural gas and oil, making it a focal point not just for sovereignty but for control over valuable energy resources. While both countries have agreed to share the profits in principle, Cambodia contends that its territorial rights deserve clearer recognition under international law.
