Homesickness strikes on Sundays without a roast, but one British expat in Thailand has found solace in a surprising locale. Julia, a TikTok creator known as @awaywithjuliaa, has captured UK expats' hearts with a viral video showcasing her quest for authentic British fare abroad.

Living in Thailand hasn't dulled Julia's cravings for an English roast. In her latest TikTok adventure, she invites viewers to join her pursuit of the perfect Sunday dinner, hoping to compare it to those back home in the UK.

Setting the scene from a quaint restaurant with outdoor seating, Julia’s enthusiasm is contagious. "I’m so excited; we’ve ordered loads of food. The only reason I came here is because I’m missing England so much," she shares.

Her journey starts with a classic: fish and chunky chips, accompanied by Heinz gourmet malt vinegar. “The first dish has arrived; look at that,” she exclaims, praising the flavourful, golden chunks.

The culinary tour continues with an impressive Toad in the Hole, featuring a giant Yorkshire pudding packed with mashed potato, peas, onions, and sausages. “Wow, that looks unreal. Julia remarks, "I got the gravy, yum," as she marvels at the generous portions of the dish.

The highlight is yet another oversized Yorkshire pudding, this time filled with roast chicken, crispy roast potatoes, carrots, and cauliflower, prompting Julia to declare, “Thailand does it better than England.”

Her video, cheekily captioned, highlights the allure of Thai roasts, claiming they’re “10X better and cheaper.” With over 57,000 views and 100 comments, the clip resonates with many, including expats long deprived of their beloved Sunday rituals.

Viewers expressed their envy and anticipation. “Food looks banging for the price; have fun,” one enthused commenter noted. Another chimed in eagerly, “I’m coming in August; I can’t wait!”

Sorry but that fish is dripping in oil and the chicken doesn't look good at all. The other dishes look nice. Where is the roast beef? Years ago there was a place in Jomtien that did a very good Sunday dinner and cheap. It was his way of giving back to his expat customers but ofcourse greedy people abused his generosity by gouging and only buying a glass of water. Eating and leaving. It was a very good little bar.

All this food looks both unhealthy and disgusting.

British simply can't live off the land and eat Thai food.

The woman doing the expose is clueless as to how unappetizing it all is. Obviously, being British no idea what good food is

The Sunday carvery. An excuse for overweight, pot bellied men to eat bland, fattening food and gain even more weight. Genius.

Just toss it in some batter and then deep fry in dirty oil

The same people that decry how unsanitary and unhealthful Thai food is. This is just a ruse instead of being honest and saying you live in a country in which you cannot eat it's food - despite it being one of best in the world.

I can't get over how awful that food looks ...!

😜 As someone not blessed with the English palate, I can’t help but wonder: do people miss that food out of nostalgia, or just because they’ve never met a proper Pad Thai?

Give me a roast dinner any day over the over-rated Pad Thai (which most Thais don't eat anyway).

Phad Thai. That's not really even Thai food.

Imagine you'd take the roast over all Thai food. That was precisely my point.

Cholesterol thru the roof, onset diabetes 👍🤷

I know the owner very well at Annie's Restaurant in Chiang Mai, the roast beef or lamb roast dinner is excellent. Packed every Sunday with people from all over the world enjoying the roasts.

Packed with tourists that can't eat nor enjoy the native foods of the country they are holidaying in.

Where is the roast?  None of the photos showed anything worth leaving the house for.

That's all she could afford.
