In a strategic move to enhance tourism and trade links, Vietnam's Ambassador to Thailand, Pham Viet Hung, met with Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat in a high-profile visit yesterday.

The meeting, held at Phuket Provincial Hall, focused on nurturing cultural and economic ties, with discussions on potential sister-city agreements, drawing inspiration from Phuket's thriving tourism model.

Yesterday's gathering, held at 2:30 p.m., highlighted the mutual interest in fostering deeper connections between these Southeast Asian neighbours. Ambassador Pham lauded Phuket's economic growth driven by tourism and smart urban planning as an exemplary model for Vietnam to consider.

The Vietnamese delegation, which was received by key figures such as Phuket's TAT Director Siriwan Siharat and Phuket Tourist Association President Thaneth Tantipiriyakij, emphasised cultural and economic synergies.

Ambassador Pham highlighted the shared history between the two countries and mentioned the recent high-level visits by the Thai prime minister to Vietnam as a foundation for future collaboration.

Governor Sophon expressed keen interest in developing stronger ties, particularly given the presence of over 700 Vietnamese nationals in Phuket, who are integral to the community. Governor Sophon welcomed the idea of knowledge exchange and forming sister-city relationships, acknowledging that these initiatives could boost tourism and economic growth.

The meeting underscored the importance of people-to-people interactions and increasing tourism between Vietnam and Phuket. The discussions involved shared initiatives in sustainable urban development and the exploration of investment opportunities, as reported by The Phuket News.

With both Phuket and Vietnam experiencing rapid growth in the tourism and urban sectors, this visit marks a pivotal step towards formal cooperation. Plans for potential memoranda of understanding, business exchanges, and city partnerships signify an exciting new phase in Thai-Vietnamese relations.
