Unathorised transaction

Featured Replies

Earlier this morning, I received an SMS alert from Krungsri bank that a spending transaction was carried out on my account.

I called Krungsri call center and they told me that the transaction originated from Facebook and they informed me to go to the police station to report and obtain a document to take to the bank.

This is a mystery as I have never used Facebook to purchase anything and I very rarely use my FB account.

I have suspended my debit card,

Any ideas.

You've probably been hacked in some way. I'd sort your electronic devices quick.

I was hacked on 2 separate occasions and my bank account was cleaned out.

How is it hacked? They get access to your bank phone app?

Did your bank pay you back?

Hacked just meaning someone has gained access to his personal life in some way.

For me I dont really know how they gained access to mine. Yes both times. They were great about it. Took some.doing though.

Don't know why the bank told you to go to the police. The bank should be able to trace it and deal with it. Bangkok Bank have their own fraud department and are very efficient. Would be surprised if Krungsri didn't have likewise.

Thanks for the replies.

I will shortly going to the police station to report and obtain a document to show Krungsri which opens at 08.30 hrs.

I will post again later this morning.

Krungsri are investigating the transaction and according to the bank, I should receive a refund within 5 days.

We will wait and see.

Not the brightest of banks. Three years ago it took them over two hours to transfer the app to my new phone. Had to do it again two weeks ago, after 45 minutes they gave up cited excuses like have another sim in phone and you changed passport a few weeks ago. When I looked at the phone after they had changed the number on my UK sim. week later they phoned and said it was the passport number change, now works but I don't trust them to use the debit card online.

Three months. Please share which bank that is?

Exactly the same thing happended to me Tuesday night. (3 x Facebook transactions 30,000thb) I called the call centre where apon the adviser told me the debit card had been suspended, straight away. Basically they knew it was an illigal transaction. Following day, letter from the police, then to the bank. Filled in the forms. Told it can take upto 90 days for the funds to be recovered. My advice is remove all your debit card information from All online sites.

This from the bank of Thailand and I quote

'The Bank of Thailand (BOT) has instructed commercial banks to expedite the refund process for victims of credit/debit card fraud and ensure compensation was paid within five business days if the cardholder was found to be blameless'.

I had a similar thing about two years ago. 27K Baht removed from my bank, and I knew it was not me. Got a statement from the local bank and it turned out to be Deliveroo in London.  Rang the head office. They said it would take about three weeks and to call back about then. 7 days later the money was back in my account. KrungThai Bank. First class service, I was impressed.

Truly frightening , call me old school but I won't use "apps" or internet banking here, just the ATM     but that probably won't be possible in the future when "cashless"   has been forced on us all

Another worry is the stance immigration (or indeed bangkok bank these days) would take if a fraudulent transaction took one below the required balance for visa extensions,    refusal of extension , or account locked for 4 months  I would not expect any sympathy from either

the feeling of helplessness would be awful in such a situation

Debit card fraud isn't anything to do with the internet or bank apps, they just need the card number.

Bank apps are the safest system in the world, they need your phone, your fingerprint and your PIN to complete a transaction.

I have multiple Thai bank accounts, but I only have an ATM/Debit card for one of them. In the online banking mobile app I have also made a number of preventive settings on the card itself which will prevent this from ever happening.

1 - I have set the all transaction limits very low for payments, withdrawals and transfer on the card since most of my transactions are usually small. if I need to make a bigger payment or transfer then I temporarily increase the limits in the app and then change it back when I am done.

2 - I have also temporarily disabled domestic online purchases on the card. And international online payments are permanently disabled. If I have to make a domestic online purchase then I temporarily enable the card in the the app for online domestic purchases and then change it back when I am done.

So, withdrawal, transfer and payment limits are all set very low by me on the card. Also, online payments are disabled until I need to make one. Thus, very little chance for fraud to occur on my account and, if it does, then the exposure is minimal with low spending limits set. And all of this can be set or changed anytime be me on the fly in a matter of seconds through the bank's mobile banking app.

It is actually the opposite. The banking apps will allow you to set personal limits on the card and/or prevent certain types of purchases which help prevent the risk of fraud. If you have only a card and no banking app to control what it can do, and the spending limits are not controlled, then you are open to a much higher risk of fraud. So what happened to the OP could easily happen to you too if you are not vigilant and you have online payments enabled on the card with no transaction limits set. If you want to reduce your risk and exposure then start using the banking app and take control of your card yourself.

You are probably right and its just me getting paranoid in my old age  ,

The only times I was scammed was back in the uk 3 times on my debit card  suspiciously each time was within a week of my Thai visa application !    and once on my business account by a german firm setting up a direct debit.   got the money back each time but not a pleasant experience

I don't use my Thai debit card  at all    just in the ATM   I'm definitely  old school  but it works for me

You are ignoring the elephant in the room. If your card number gets compromised, and you haven't disabled online purchases on the card, then money can simply disappear from your account for a large online purchase while you are in bed sleeping, just like the OP. See what I wrote above.

Thanks for the advice and the warning, why  could I not simply go to the bank in person and have them set some limits for me ?  My original ATM card did not even  have a debit card function or an expiry date but I was forced to get the new one when it was eaten by an ATM machine

My guess is that these are self-administered settings for the card and are only available through the app, but you can try asking the bank, maybe they can do it too. That said, a lot less can go wrong if you set these things yourself. What if they make a mistake or don’t get it right? Are you really going to try to hold them responsible later by saying they set it up incorrectly? Good luck holding them accountable if there’s a problem because of incorrect card settings.

And what if you have the limits set low and suddenly need to increase them temporarily for a larger transaction? Back to the bank? Not exactly convenient.

not exactly inconvenient either its only 5 minutes away ,   maybe I'll just destroy the card and use my passbook, but i'm sure you're going to tell me how dangerous that is too

First good idea you have had so far. 😀

Actually, I don't like ATM cards at all. To me they are a liability. All Thai banks also charge a yearly service fee of 200 Baht for each card. So if you have 4-5 accounts the charges can add up. But I have one ATM debit card from one of my accounts because it is handy to have one at times and, as I mentioned, my card is pretty much locked down by me anyway.

But if you setup your mobile banking app then you can use the banking app to do cardless ATM withdrawals. Safest solution there is, gets rid of the card and the annual card fee, and don't need to go into the bank or use your passbook to get cash out of your account.

"Bangkok Bank have their own fraud department and are very efficient". What a load of cobblers. I had around 1000Bt a time taken from my Bangkok Bank account by two different companies from Cyprus and they did nothing about it. I immediately withdrew the vast majority of funds and set up another account elsewhere.

Totally the opposite for me. Dealt with over the phone and then email. Was fully refunded within a month! Cobblers!? Not for me! Then again, I wasn't quibbling over a couple of thousand Baht, it was more like 25,000 Baht! 🤣
