  • The Brits killed it with fake American accents.

  • After the British copy cat rip-off  came  Psychedelic Rock and Punk Rock, two more British abominations.   The Americans reclaimed rock with Hair Metal, Alternative Rock and Grunge.

  • "What happened to Rock n Roll music"... well, a combination of gay unmanly nonsense that has swept society with silly kids thinking people like Taylor Swift is offering an answer... may I throw up.

Hello? Tina Turner was not 'Rock'. She was a 'pop' idol.

Hello?   Listen to The Ike and Tina Turner Revue where she started.   That was rock and R&B.    Example, Nutbush City Limit.   Man, Ike played a mean guitar.

Hey Yes! Tina Turner "Acid Queen". One of my earliest LP's.

Fabulous choice of earlier rock'roll/blues.

50 years coming up when I saw it on Countdown going down Flinders st in Melbourne. Bloody hell. Fun fact I didn't know - that I heard the other day - ACDC never played that song post Bon Scott.

Man Oh Man! That was music. Watching it again now. Swanston Street?

Never seen AC/DC live. I lived in the wrong places. 🙃🙃

You are moving back to Texas permanently? Did your daughter come over with you or is she a Thai citizen?

Yes, and she was born here and is dual citizen.

An example of a classic imo below. The shuffle rhythm, the catchy riff.

But that's my point.

People don't listen to the lyrics and have no idea what they're listening to.

Midnight Rambler is one of many rock songs that is sick.

A lot of western music (not only rock) is sick.

Pay attention to the lyrics. It's talking about a mass murderer who will slit your gf's throat in the middle of the night.

Did you see me jump bedroom door
I'm called the hit and run raper, in anger
Or just a knife sharpened, tippy toe
Or just a shoot 'em dead, brainbell jongleur
Everybody got to go
If you ever meet the midnight rambler
And he's prowlin' down your marble hall
And he's pouncin' like a proud black panther
You should say, I told you so
If you listen for the midnight rambler
Play it easy, easy, as you go
I'll go smash down all your plate glass windows
Put my fist through your stairway doors
Well I'm a-talkin' bout the midnight rambler
The one you never seen before
Well I'm a-talkin' bout the midnight rambler
And did you see me jump your garden wall
And if you ever catch the Midnight Rambler
Steal your mistress from under your nose
Go easy with your cold fanged anger
I'll stick my knife right down your throat baby, and it hurts

Lyrics are there to show what the musician's thinking, whether it's the singer, another band member or someone who wrote the song for the band, thinking they could express it best.

Some love the lyrics of songs, whether it's a love song, angst against the establishment, to prove a point, share what they went through, knowing others can relate, Ozzy Osbourne for an example, had many thinking he worshiped the devil, when he was a believer. Some songs are there for that reason, to question a belief.

Some, like Fortunate Son, are there to protest the war and it's effect on the soldiers and innocent lives.

Songs are also to vent anger in a safe way. To talk about evil and what they would like to see done, even though it would also mean they were practicing evil if they took revenge against another who was hurting someone.

Many songs are there to make people move, as dance is an expression of how you feel, and the lyrics aren't that important like the beat is. Saturday Night Special by Lynyrd Skynyrd is talking about a man who killed his friend because he caught him cheating in cards, and another shooting his girlfriend's lover in revenge, but the meaning is that they are only meant to kill, and should be thrown in the sea, to get rid of them.

Lyrics mean a lot to millions, mainly so they can relate to what another has gone through in their own life. Some are silly for just that reason. More people listen to lyrics than you would think, for all the reasons above and more. I surely do, and dedicate songs to my girlfriend because the lyrics are how I feel about her, although someone else wrote them.

That sounds like it should be a horror movie, not a song.

Thanks for pointing out more sick songs. I'm glad I never got into Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Just musicians talking about life. What they or others they know experienced, things that happen in life that are good and bad, hopes, dreams and reality. Music is there to enjoy, vent and express. Lynyrd Skynyrd have many excellent songs about life. Life is good, bad and everything in between. Music expresses that in songs.............

And another by Lynyrd Skynyrd that shows how a simple life can be............

And another good song from Neal Casal...............

Come and see me later on
You know where I'll be
In the shade out by the barn
Where no one can see me
Come and lay down in the sun
Another blue sky
And tell me that you'll be the one
To make my dreams up and

Fly away
With no help from above
I'll feel no pain

Now all my friends were here today
And they were all talking
They had such good things to say
Oh, yes they did
I see you standing by the gate
In silent spirit
It makes me wish there was a way
I could make your dreams up and

Fly away
With no help from above
You'd feel no pain
With only love to guide you on your way
Every day
And when it's over
You will feel no pain

Now I see the world
Through such tired eyes
But I don't know why
But maybe I can trace it to the time
When their dream became my lie
And now it's up to me to try
Try to face up to the truth somewhere inside
Oh, now I've got to try

So come and see me later on
You know where I'll be
Singing these songs out by the barn
Hoping they'll hear me
So go and try to save your sons
While you still have time
And tell them they're the only ones
Who can make their dreams up and

Fly away
With no help from above
They'll feel no pain
With all of your love to guide them
On their way
Every day
And when it's over
They will feel no pain
Feel no pain
And when they're older
They will feel no pain

Not interested in music that isn't correct, no matter the instrumentation. The same for some western music. Some singers don't belong in bands, as they're singing again, doesn't blend well. I've watched the Thai version of The X Factor and America and Britains got talent quite a few times. If you know music well, you would understand.

YOU MEAN YOU MISS PEOPLE LIKE HER

I watch those shows occasionally just to see the good singers and hilarious other ridiculous ones. I rarely listened to radio music after leaving New Jersey in 1985, as I had cassettes to listen to and radio stations always played the same things which got old fast. Much of the best music many will never hear, either stuck in one type or not understanding there are bands out there that are great that don't get the promotion they deserve. Politics ruins it just like in other areas.

Rock and roll is alive and well in the shape of a Filipino family band called Missioned Souls. Check their covers of Highway Star, Whole Lotta Love and their latest Crazy Train played live for the first time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6WRxaC3QME   They have over 200 videos. Some with mum and dsd and some with just the four siblins.

Okay, I get your point. But I'm not diving back into the archives of Buddy Holly or Bill Haily and the Comets either. To me, maybe my age, rock (by that I refer to hard rock and filling arenas and selling millions of albulms to die-hard fans) begins with cream/Zeppelin and goes through the 70's and 80's where it starts to be challenged by other genres like new wave, disco, punk, (and pop music - which expands exponentially propelled by the recording industry and radio). The point of the thread is what happened to rock - I've been giving my perspective from my age group. Late boomers I guess? But others may have different views.

I'm more than happy to listen to Bachata and Reggaetón music.

I guess a lot of older guys get stuck in the past.

But I think the best time to live is now, not 30 years in the past.

Alice Cooper just released a new album.  It's the original band members.  Except for Glen who passed away.

Now it's splintered off into tiny sub-genres.

Please what do you mean by the British copy cat rip off.Does this include the Beatles, Rolling Stones,Deep Purple,Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc,etc.etc.

Of course there are better artists than Elvis now, who make better music

Better artists and better music? Really? And who would they be?

Billie Eilish for a start, have you not heard "Birds of Feather"?

Elvis was an innovator, like the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Sabbath and Stones, but many other artists had (have) a lot more musical talent. His music, like the Beatles, was simple, poppy and easy to listen to and enjoy, much because of the dance rhythms. Many people love music they can move to, which doesn't mean it's instrumentation is the best but just easy to enjoy. There are musicians like Mark Knopfler,(Dire Straits), Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Joe Bonamassa, Mostly Autumn, Pendragon, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan (lyrically), Paul Rodgers, Freddie Mercury (Queen), Kansas, and many, many more who wrote and perform much better, more intricate music than Elvis did.

Some of us grew up with rock music but started going to clubs so we could dance to House Music!

Elvis was a good singer, let's not pretend he wasn't, however, he played no musical instruments to any high standard and never wrote his own music. Nobody in their right mind would say he had the musical talent of a Prince or Elton John or today the Eilish siblings.

That's not saying Elvis was not a brilliant performer and singer, he was outstanding, but he wasn't an outstanding musician or songwriter.

So many worthless and second-rate performers are mentioned above as examples of first-class artists, and so many brilliant performers are not mentioned at all, that I’m not at all surprised rock has long been dead — just like most people who once had the ear to tell gold from fakes.

Mark Knopfler is nobody. Even comparing somebody like him to Beatles is an act of blasphemy.

Poor excuse.  Keith Richard has been dead for 15 years and no one has noticed anything different about him.
