Well you have now . 37 years in Thailand is a bit vague  ? Which area ?

Still dont believe it. Two on Samui, the rest in the Don Muang area of BKK. Have travelled to over 50 of the Thai provinces including all the southern and eastern ones with beach access. All of those working in the hospitality industry.

RIP Little One - irregardless of what others are saying here - it was not your fault, you were just having fun as all 10 year olds do.  In loving memory, I remain heart broken for you and your family

@marin  yep, more barstool BS.   Would think they welcome the red flags, as beach tourist get bored, and actually use the vendors more.

Also been to most of the provinces (~75), and along most of the mainland coastline and a few islands.   Some never leave that barstool, and know and or been told everything from the other barstool :cheesy:

Many times it's panic that people succumb to, the more you freak out and struggle the worse off you are. Probably what happened here as she sees her family being rescued and she is being carried away. Poor thing, really sad.

Mentioned many times here ad nauseum, the 11 years I lived in Thailand I pulled 25-30 people out of the water, many times they were all boozed up from drinking in the sun, or Thais in full clothing, or people losing their minds thinking they are going to drown.

First thing "chai yen yen", relax. Float in the water, then begin to swim parallel to the beach and out of the rip, then in.

When surfing in big waves the rips are a blessing. Waves break around the rip and it's a quick way out riding the rip.

Quite so. This beach at Kata is well known - as it is to many of us - I visit there annually and have done so for many years. It can be very dangerous.

Most of the time, there are red flags flying at approx. 20m intervals - they are there for a purpose. They also bear a warning sign. The flags are there all year round, on and off.

Even with the lifeguards - many tourists still enter the water regardless of weather conditions, red flags or larger than normal waves. I believe Kata is also known for its undercurrent and rip tide dangers.

Even though she's 18, my daughter will not go in the sea unless I am with her - simply for for that very reason.

Nevertheless, I feel very sad for the little girl and her parents.

We turn our backs for a split second, let our defenses down and there is a disaster waiting to happen.

You can guarantee that this family did not envisage such a terrible tragedy could occur on their holiday.

Very, very sad.
