In a tragic incident that has reignited concerns about road safety, a motorcyclist has died following a high-speed crash on Thepkasattri Road in Phuket's Mai Khao. The accident occurred yesterday evening near the notorious Coconut Grove Curve, a danger spot feared by local riders.

The victim, identified as 41-year-old Mai Khao resident Samreong, lost control of his GPX Legend 250, colliding with the central median. Emergency services received the call at 5.05pm, according to Police Lieutenant Jitthiwa Thanawithila of the Tha Chatchai Police. Rescue teams from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation’s Muang Mai Branch rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, medics found Samreong unconscious on the tarmac, his motorcycle in ruins nearby. Despite frantic efforts to revive him, he was declared dead on the spot. Traffic was severely disrupted as police secured the area and removed the wreckage. Samreong's body was taken to Thalang Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the precise cause of death. Police are in the process of informing his family to begin traditional rites.

The Coconut Grove Curve is infamous for its severe bend and uneven surface, especially hazardous during the rainy season. Locals warn that even seasoned riders have suffered accidents here, often due to misjudging the turn or excessive speed.

"Everyone knows that corner. If you’re not careful, it will catch you out. It’s taken too many lives already," a regular commuter commented.

Phuket has one of the highest rates of road accidents in Thailand, with motorcycles accounting for the bulk of fatalities. Authorities continue to urge caution, advising riders to slow down, wear helmets, and exercise extreme care, particularly at identified accident blackspots.

Preliminary findings suggest it was a single-vehicle incident with no other parties involved. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage to piece together the events leading up to the crash.

This tragic accident once again highlights the urgent need for improved road safety measures and increased awareness among motorists to prevent further loss of life on Phuket's roads.
