In a distressing incident in Phuket, a taxi driver has been apprehended after a foreign teacher accused him of rape. The 28-year-old African woman reported the alleged assault to Thalang Police on Saturday, 23 August.

The victim recounted that after an evening out with a friend, they ordered a taxi to travel home. Her friend was dropped off first, leaving her alone with the driver. The situation took a dark turn when the driver reportedly stopped the vehicle in a secluded alley in the Sunthon district.

According to her statement, the driver dragged her into the nearby forest, sexually assaulted her, and stole her phone before fleeing. Thankfully, local motorists offered assistance, taking the woman to a hospital for treatment.

Today, police confirmed they arrested the driver at his residence. While he conceded to stealing her mobile phone, he denied the rape allegation. He claimed the woman couldn't pay the fare, saying she was penniless. In his version of events, she undressed to show she had no hidden money, leading him to take her phone.

The incident has ignited an online furore, with Thai netizens demanding the police and media to reveal the suspect’s identity and vehicle registration to protect future passengers. The image shared online shows his face obscured, which has sparked public outrage.

Critics have also urged ride-hailing companies to enhance safety protocols and conduct stricter driver background checks. They stressed that such incidents highlight systemic issues within these services that need addressing to ensure passenger safety.

The ride-hailing app involved has not been disclosed. Meanwhile, police have withheld further details about the suspect and any charges pending against him. If convicted, he could face significant penalties under Section 276 of the Criminal Law, which carries a prison term of four to 20 years and a fine ranging between 80,000 and 400,000 baht (around £1,800 to £9,000).

This case mirrors a similar occurrence last year in Pattaya, where a motorcycle taxi driver raped a passenger. Despite initially evading arrest, he was later cornered by the victim’s friends and handed over to the police.

The Phuket incident underscores the ongoing challenges of passenger safety within app-based transportation services, highlighting the urgent need for reforms and accountability. As investigations continue, public attention remains fixed on the proceedings, with many calling for justice for the victim and improved safety for future passengers.
