A typically quiet road in Phuket witnessed a violent turn of events when an 18-year-old, known as Thanwa, became the victim of a gang-related shooting. The incident unfolded on the evening of 24 August along Muang Thong-Khao Khad Road, near the bustling Muang Thong Market in the Wichit subdistrict of Mueang district.

Thanwa was reportedly shot in the back while riding his motorcycle and was swiftly taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he remains in serious condition. Charged with the investigation, the Wichit Police revealed that the attack was carried out by three teenagers on a motorbike, with one opening fire before the group sped away.

In response, Police Colonel Somsak Thongkliang, Superintendent of Wichit Police Station, spearheaded a rapid crackdown to apprehend those responsible. By the following day, with evidence gathered swiftly, arrest warrants were issued by the Phuket Provincial Court.

On 26 August, two suspects were formally identified and detained. Wasan, 22, known locally as Bang Seed, faced charges including joint attempted murder, illegal firearm possession, and discharging a weapon in public. Wasan has since confessed to the crime.

The second suspect, a 15-year-old known only as “Name,” was revealed to be the motorbike driver. He confessed to his involvement and was remitted to the Phuket Juvenile and Family Court for further proceedings.

Investigators revealed the suspects were affiliated with the Sap Chang gang, a local youth group notorious for violent activities. Following this lead, law enforcement expanded their operation to six more locations, resulting in two additional arrests.

The first, Bankchat, 27, was discovered with a homemade firearm and shotgun parts, while Rapiraphat, alias Art, was apprehended with methamphetamines. They face distinct charges related to weapon and drug possession.

While investigations prompted further questioning of gang members, no additional charges were filed immediately. Authorities, however, seized four motorbikes associated with the gang and confirmed that legal measures would be taken against the parents of the involved teenagers under the Child Protection Act of 2003, citing a failure to supervise their children.

The recent crackdown not only aims to bring the perpetrators to justice but also seeks to curb escalating youth violence in Phuket. The police emphasised their commitment to preventing further incidents, reassuring the community of heightened vigilance in maintaining public safety.

This alarming incident underscores the urgent need for broader community engagement and effective measures to address the root causes of youth violence. As the investigation progresses, the local community remains hopeful for a swift resolution and new initiatives to protect its youth from similar fates.
