The Native Americans were given land of low pastoral and arable value while the settlers kept the best for themselves.  For a people whose very existence was based on a relationship with the land that sustained them this was tantamount to a death sentence for many, and a total destruction of their society with education and other opportunities withheld from them.

That the land later proved to have valuable oil deposits is irrelevant; if it was known at the time it would never have been given to them by the settlers.
