In 2024, Donald Trump carried Iowa’s 1st state Senate District by 11 points. But in a surprise turn during Tuesday’s special election, Democrat Catelin Drey secured a decisive 10-point win, marking a stunning 21-point swing toward Democrats since the last presidential contest.

Drey defeated Republican contender Christopher Prosch to claim the seat previously held by the late GOP state Senator Rocky De Witt. In 2022, De Witt had unseated a Democratic incumbent by roughly 10 points, highlighting just how significant this reversal is for the district.

The upset victory also ends the supermajority Iowa Senate Republicans have enjoyed since 2022. With the new balance of power, Republican senators will now need at least one Democratic vote to confirm Governor Kim Reynolds’ nominees, forcing a degree of bipartisan cooperation.

This race was the fourth special election held in Iowa this year, and the results have not favored the GOP. Democrats have now flipped multiple seats, including one race where a Republican incumbent was ousted 52–48. In each contest, Democrats have dramatically outperformed their 2024 baseline—by 24, 25, and 26 points respectively.

The Iowa trend mirrors what’s happening nationally. According to The Downballot, Democrats running in special elections across the country have been outperforming the party’s 2024 presidential results by an average of 16 points, signaling strong momentum heading into 2026.

The election saw a low turnout, with approximately 7,600 votes cast, representing about 24% of registered voters in the district. This turnout was significantly lower than the nearly 22,000 votes cast in the district during the 2024 presidential election.

Since Iowa is majority Republican, they control 6 of the 7 state offices, Republican likely hang their head in shame and don't want to be seen in public.

That would explain the low voter turnout.

Looks like none of the repubs showed up for the election.

Just keep that attitude, the same as the rural Republicans in Iowa did. You had better realize fairly soon "normal" people, those that were fooled before are waking up. Trumps numbers are plunging as it seems he is both mentally and physically. Could it be Biden 2. 😅

Yep - Wait for Midterms in Nov 2026.   "Surprise Surprise Surprise!"

They usually just lie shamelessly, hate and leave thumbs down emojis on the truth as well as spew racism, antisemitism and general Trump hate. Guess they need something to celebrate.

2400 folks in Iowa (in a county the euros couldnt find on a map) elected a Dem. Therefore, Trump must reverse all his actions and follow the Democratic program exactly. Open the border!!!!!

A win is a win. You have to start somewhere. It was in a Republican district. It sure did get all the Trump fans knickers twisted. Watch. More to follow.

Amazing that MAGA's were shouting from their soap box when they won the majority in the senate, but are suddenly ignorant to the fact that they lost it 8 months late already, while the mid-term elections are still 16 months away.

The bigger irony is that they lost that majority through elections in a predominantly Republican state.

Show exactly how blind they are for a reality that is staring them in the face.

Knickers are twisted and pearls are clutched. All is not well in the MAGAverse.

Do you realize this was an election for state senate seat, not the Senate at the federal level?

My bad for the confusion, doesn't leave out the fact that Iowa is predominately Republican registered voter state, with 50% more Republicans than Democrats.

Shame you don't see the sign on the wall yet.

You can rest your laurels on an out of sequence election with a 7% voter turnout.   Enjoy.

Posting lies doesn't make it a truth.

There was a 24% voter turn out, according to your OWN previous claim, which actually proofs my earlier comment that the 37% Republican voters in that state don't want to vote any more for the lost cause
