A suspected drug trafficker was shot dead by police on 8 September, after fatally wounding a narcotics suppression officer during a dramatic raid on an apartment block in Phuket.

The incident occurred inside a third-floor flat in Soi Yai Chan, Wichit sub-district, where officers had launched a sting operation following an earlier arrest.

According to police, the operation began after investigators detained a suspect with two packets of drugs believed to belong to a larger trafficking network. Acting on information, a team of officers moved in on the apartment building, where they initially apprehended three people, two men and one woman.

However, another suspect had locked himself inside a bathroom. When officers forced entry, he allegedly opened fire with a sawn-off shotgun, striking Pol Sub-Lt. Prajak Thaharnthai, deputy inspector of the Phuket provincial narcotics suppression unit, in the chest. He was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital but later died from his injuries.

Police returned fire, killing the gunman at the scene. His body was found in the bathroom after the confrontation. Forensic officers, public prosecutors and district officials were called in to examine the scene and conduct an autopsy.

Witnesses reported hearing four to five gunshots during the clash. The apartment owner’s son, Mr Chaiwat, 52, said the group had rented the unit less than five days earlier. “I asked for the tenant’s ID card, which is standard practice, but they refused. They told me they’d bring it later after getting paid. Then, during the incident, I suddenly heard what I thought were firecrackers, it turned out to be gunfire,” he said.

Police took the three surviving suspects into custody for questioning as the investigation continues.
