I totally agree, he did nothing for Isarn, he bought them phones and made them use his expensive communications network, fooling them into thinking he was helping them. Oh, and paying the all to vote is his first ever democratic government 555.

Good riddance, and I’m he has been deleted from school history books by Prayud 555

I know but many foreigners say it like Taksin, for example Saphan Taksin BTS station.

Different pronunciation too.

The first letter 't' in King Thaksin's name is the Thai letter ต, pronounced like a cross between 't' and 'd' whilst Thaksin's ' t' ท is soft like our 't'.

Plus the 'a' in King Taksin's name is long, the Thai vowel า whilst in Thaksin's the vowel is  short  ั and sounds ( to my ears) like a cross between a and u, like the vowel in 'done' but shorter!

Interestingly, despite driving the Burmese out of Thailand, King Taksin was executed, some say because of his increasingly tyrannical and paranoid rule.

Whilst no one would argue Thaksin is paranoid, many have accused him of behaving in an authoritarian manner at the height of his powers in the early 2000s!

If my memory serves me right, Taksin made billions by causing the Tom Yam Gung crisis in 97. Not sure if he was deputy PM to Barnhart or Big Jiu. Or maybe Finance Minister.

Bad memory.....

Thaksin was nominated Vice-PM on August 15th, 1997. The crisis started on July 2nd,1997, when the Thai government was forced to float the baht.

lol, you missed out 1996 to 1997.

Thaksin Shinawatra played a huge role in the 1997 collapse. As Deputy Prime Minister he was right there when the economy started to wobble, and instead of protecting the country he looked after himself. Billions were shifted abroad, including his own money, under his watch, and when the baht finally broke he came out of it unscathed while ordinary Thais saw their savings, jobs, and futures vanish overnight.

For years afterwards, everyday people struggled with IMF austerity, collapsing banks, and sky-high unemployment, while Thaksin only grew more powerful and richer. He personally benefitted from the disaster and then had the audacity to reinvent himself as the “savior” of the poor. The truth is that the baht collapse wasn’t just bad luck, it was enabled by selfish decisions at the very top, with Thaksin right in the middle of it all.

I have not missed out anything and provided a source in which you can check this information. He left the Banharn government in August 1996, and joined the Chavalit government only on 15 August 1997

BANGKOK - The Thai Supreme Court has sentenced Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister, to one year in prison for an unlawful medical leave process.

The decision was announced on 9th September at the Criminal Division for Political Office Holders in a high-profile case known publicly as the "Police Hospital Floor 14 Case." The court summoned Thaksin and the Bangkok Remand Prison Chief to deliver the decision.

The ruling requires Thaksin to serve his sentence without counting the period he spent receiving treatment at the Police General Hospital. This marks the start of a fresh prison term for Thaksin, who must now return to jail.

During the hearing, Thaksin appeared tense and was seen clutching his forehead. His daughters, Paetongtarn and Pintongta, present for support, also shared a similar look of concern.

Your source is unprecise and doesn't indicate dates. It also doesn't seem to mention his presence in the Barnhan government.

The dates indicated in the Wikipedia articles are confirmed by other reliable sources. For example:

https://www.britannica.com/biography/Thaksin-Shinawatra

https://www.encyclopedia.com/reference/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/thaksin-shinawatra

There are few digitalised sources from this period, but Thaksin is not mentioned in the first Chavalit cabinet in November 1996.

https://www.afr.com/politics/thai-pm-caves-in-on-key-posts-in-cabinet-19961128-k77fh

But he is mentioned in the 15 August 1997 reshuffle.

https://www.scmp.com/article/207727/chavalit-gambles-all-reshuffle

So different sources confirm the dates indicated the Wikipedia articles.

There were many accusations at the time of Square head and Big Jiew benefitting from Tom Yam Kong, and in fact deliberately starting it by not defending the baht.

Thaksin was surely involved, whatever position he held.

From wiki

Although generally regarded as relatively clean and honest when compared to other Thai administrations, Chuan's government found itself plagued with corruption scandals and rumours. Key cases of corruption included:

  • Rakkiat Sukhthana, Health Minister, was charged with taking a five million baht (US$125,000) bribe from a drug firm and forcing state hospitals to buy medicine at exorbitant prices. After being found guilty, he jumped bail and went into hiding.
  • Suthep Thaugsuban, Minister of Transport and Communications, whose brokering of illegal land deals caused the fall of the Chuan 1 government, was linked to abuse of funds in setting up a co-operative Surat Thani Province.[17]
  • The "edible fence" seed scandal, in which massive overpricing of seeds distributed to rural areas happened. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture was forced to resign.[18]
  • The Salween logging scandal, where up to 20,000 trees were felled illegally in the Salween forest in Mae Hong Son. Some of them turned up in the compound of the Democrat party's office in Phichit Province.[18]
  • Sanan Kajornprasart, Interior Minister, as well as eight other cabinet ministers were found to have understated their declared assets. Sanan was later barred by the Constitutional Court from politics for five years.[19]
  • Chuan himself was found by the National Counter-Corruption Commission to have undeclared shareholdings in a rural cooperative

same same but different 🤣

Haha now you are the one fudging the dates.
He quit his cabinet post (DPM in charge of Bkk traffic)  in May 96 but retained MP seat. There was a cabinet reshuffle after that.
So he was only an MP from May 1996 till Aug same year where he and. His party (PDP) quit the government altogether. Parliament was dissolved in Sept 96.

He was not in government not even as an MP until August 97 which was AFTER the Thai baht was floated AFTER the financial crisis which was in July 97

fyi Big Jiew government only came to being in Nov 97. Before that it was the Banharn government which Thaksin was DPM briefly as coalition partner
