An ice cream vendor was left critically injured after being shot twice during a confrontation in Chiang Mai’s Doi Saket district. The incident occurred in front of Wat Fai Thong on Ban Fai Thong Road, Moo 13, San Pu Loei, on 16 September 2025. Rescue workers from Sawang Samret 603 provided initial assistance before transferring the victim to Doi Saket Hospital.

Police identified the injured man as 56-year-old Sarayut, who had sustained two gunshot wounds to the abdomen. He was reported to be in critical condition when emergency personnel arrived. Officers from Doi Saket Police Station were immediately notified and launched an investigation.

At the scene, investigators recovered a sharp fruit knife and a slingshot, which were secured as evidence. Witnesses told police that Sarayut, who rented a house in Ban Fai Thong village and worked as an ice cream seller, was known to regularly use a slingshot to shoot at dogs on the street. This behaviour had caused repeated tensions in the neighbourhood.

On the day of the incident, 70-year-old Rand, a local resident, confronted Sarayut and questioned him about shooting at dogs. The exchange quickly escalated into a heated argument. According to witnesses, Sarayut then drew a knife and attempted to stab Rand.

In response, Rand pulled a firearm from a bag he was carrying and fired two shots at Sarayut, causing him to collapse in the middle of the road. Bystanders called for help, and rescue services arrived within minutes. Police confirmed they were interviewing witnesses and examining CCTV footage from the area to establish a clear sequence of events.

The case has raised concern among local authorities about escalating disputes between residents. Investigators are determining what charges will be filed and against whom, depending on the outcome of their inquiry and evidence collected. Sarayut remains under medical care in hospital.

Police stated that all relevant items, including the knife and slingshot, are being held for forensic examination. Further updates will depend on medical reports, as well as statements from both Rand and community witnesses.

Key Takeaways

• An ice cream vendor was shot twice after allegedly threatening a 70-year-old man with a knife.

• The dispute began after the vendor was accused of repeatedly shooting dogs with a slingshot.

• Police are investigating and have secured the knife and slingshot as evidence.

Why were the dogs wandering in the road?

Why was the old guy carrying a gun?

Maybe he was angry about it for a while and prepared himself for conflict

Premeditated then.

One has a knife, the other a gun. Just another day in the Land of Smiles

Self defense against a nutter, animal abuser.  Hope the gun was legal 👍

And again, two residents still on the learning curve about the precepts of Buddhism...

I saw a guy with a slingshot once.

Looked like he was trying to take down a bird.

Never been to Lopburi, but I read that you can pay a kid to keep the monkeys away with a slingshot.

Monkeys there can be aggressive? go after your iphone for a banana?

Or do it yourself, I guess.

Not sure I would want to be responsible to taking the monkey's eye out, though.

In this case, looks like abuse, but who knows...

Dogs do hate the ice cream sellers and often chase them. There are nasty dogs attacking people, I also have a slingshot that I rarely need to use when I'm cycling, it can get quite nasty, can even blind some dogs if you have good aim.

That's the main reason I don't cycle anymore. The dog attacks you, you try to swerve, a car comes along, and goodbye Peter.
I've since bought an hometrainer.

Dogs are and remain a major problem in LOS, but the government protects them.

Or, move to China and make a meal out of them.

  • Monkeys, specifically macaques, are classified as a protected species under Thailand's wildlife conservation law.
  • The Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act was introduced in 2014, which includes provisions for the protection of various animal species, including monkeys.

The above is from the Thailand Animal Protection Act 2014, now that said, I have been attacked numerous times in Lop Buri, hit one and a bigger one will come to protect it, I had a collapsable baton and drove him away, but another jumped on my back and bit my shoulder - thru the backpack strap, my girlfriend drove him off and we left the area.  We saw one dragging a baby doll around by the arm, I thought it was a real child, untill we got closer and saw if was a doll.   Evil Monsters they are. but you will be fined if caught hitting one.

Carry an Android phone, monkeys are hiso and will only go for iPhones

This was June 2007, low season, raining no one around. Stray dogs had been a problem at Nai Harn Beach Phuket, one had bit my buddy's small daughter, as well as many people complaining about the amount of these nasty dogs.

Looking at the surf, 7AM, pop-pop-pop, wondering what those sounds were (firecrackers?), I go give a look, pickup truck and BIBs, BIBs shooting stray dogs and tossing them in the bed of the truck. They got about a dozen.
