Tourist SIM

Featured Replies

Hi,

last September when I came for a month I got a tourist sim at the AIS shop on a 50% promotion, I think the full price was around 900ish baht which is steep for one month

can I just buy a starter sim and then get a pre paid amount put on each month?

I will be in Thailand for two months, only use the Thai sim for 4g (my phones 5g is blocked in Thailand for some reason) for use with googles, maps, translate and some web browsing when out and about. just looking for about 20gigs a month of data max

anybody know what options are out there?

Thanks

  • No, the AIS store will sell you the most expensive option they can. Which is how you ended up buying a 450bht tourist SIM last time.   Sim 19bht, 1 month data 200bht https://s.laza

  • Sims usually cost 20-50bht. A 1 year data SIM with free phone calls costs 2100bht Monthly PAYG data Sims are around 250bht/month.

  • so just go into an AIS store and ask for a pre paid sim and have it set up The just top it up at 7/11 each month? thanks for your help

A 1 year data SIM with free phone calls costs 2100bht

You have to ask the shop for the item you want

They won't tell you what's available

Not enough commission

No topup at 7/11 counter.

Is it a decade ago?

Many options available.

Of course you can buy AIS SIM loaded with a typical one month package (200 to 300 Baht) at about every phone booth at shopping malls.

They will usually help you with registering to your name (passport required).

And install the AIS app for you, so you can top up from your bank or Credit/Debit card. Easy.

If just for data, there is a 3 month Marathon Max pack for 590 baht https://www.lazada.co.th/products/pdp-i5024859511.html Then no need to top up at all.

In the service centres and shops, they seem loathe to sell you just a prepaid SIM without trying to force you to buy a 300+ baht package. That strategy may have already failed, but better that you are aware what might happen.

Hence the suggestion to just buy a SIM or eSIM online, to add the package of your choice.

https://www.lazada.co.th/products/pdp-i1487274400.html

The three best all round options are All Together 250, 300 and 350.

Since Altogether 300 sits nicely in the middle, I'll illustrate that one.

All together 300

  • 5G internet 20GB (+15Mbps internet speed 60GB per month)
  • FUP 1Mbps
  • Unlimited free calls to all networks (15 minutes/call)
  • Free unlimited AIS WIFI
  • AIS Play family free
  • Free internet for the first month (20GB) *777*7693#
  • Free internet for 2-6 months (20GB) *777*23002#

To apply, top up 300 baht and enter *777*9272# and then hit the Call key. 100GB per month that then slows to 1 Mbps if you use it up.

If 50 baht means a lot to you, then you can look at the 250.

All together 250

  • 5G internet 10GB (+15Mbps internet speed 45GB per month)
  • FUP 384Kbps
  • Unlimited free calls to all networks (15 minutes/call)
  • Free unlimited AIS WIFI
  • AIS Play family free
  • Free internet for the first month (10GB) *777*7673#
  • Free internet for 2-6 months (20GB) *777*22502#

To apply, top up 300 baht and enter *777*9284# and then hit the Call key. 65GB to 75GB per month that then slows to 384kbps if you use it up.

haha, I used to come and stay for six months at a time but that was about ten years ago.
back then you topped the phone up at 7/11 for pre paid so assumed you still could
only came for a month last year so didnt need to top up

'n the service centres and shops, they seem loathe to sell you just a prepaid SIM without trying to force you to buy a 300+ baht package' that was my experience more or less. AIS, True shops at a mall all tried flogging me a tourist sim, the same overpriced one they sell at airports.

Net Marathon MAX

  • Internet speed 15Mbps, 50GB per month
  • No FUP
  • Open a new number within 30 days

3 months

590 baht

7/11 100% do top-ups. I've been here for 5months and regularly top-up there.

You top up AIS 12-call at 7/11 counter in Thailand?

Wow. You stand out.

Have always (3 times in 15 years) avoided anything branded as "Tourist" and just bought normal sims for around 200 baht.

Whats special about tourist sims apart from the crazy price?

They don't do AIS the last rival mobile network to True.

True like 7/11 is part of CP, biggest of the oligopoly groups that own Thailand.

I decided to pop into an AIS store, to put it to the test. I asked about SIM/eSIM and if I could just take a SIM from them without a package. The answer was no and the question they are tasked with asking, is how long you are staying, in order to determine the length of validity of package to offer. The cheapest, was a 10 Day package, with perhaps 35GB data allowance, for 349 baht 😊 Their 30 day packages were around 1200 baht and 1700 baht. Patently ridiculous.

Better to just buy a SIM card from an independent shop for around 100 baht if you are on foot or just order online for around 50 baht. You can then cross the aisle back into the AIS shop to top it up and then use the code to add the package that you actually want.

I guess they make money from the gullible. There was no sign of the All Together 250/300/350, which would suit most tourists.

My advice would be to take a screenshot of the All Together packages I have posted, into an AIS shop. Much harder for them to refuse to sell you one of their own packages.  Their scam only works when they think you don't know any better.

Online you can buy a PAYG AIS data SIM (65gb) for 250ht ..... which includes the first month.

Then 300bht for each extra month .........

https://www.lazada.co.th/products/free-for-the-first-month-simthai-ais-speed-15mbps-unlimited-internet-access-ready-to-use-free-ais-super-wifi-without-any-restrictions-on-any-package-i4076321083-s18875078646.html?

@BritManToo It's 250 baht for each month after that. It's the All Together 250 package illustrated above. They have the All Together 300 package there too, though not the All Together 350.

You're saving on the cost of the SIM, rather just paying for postage cost.

Another good way to get around the shops pushing customers towards overpriced packages.

My last trip was a few years ago, but I used to get the One2Call, is that still an option?.  Of course I never used my phone for much back then, maybe it is used much more these days.  I am applying for the 6 month DTV before arrival, so what ‘Package” do you recommend, I would use it at least six months a year.  My Condo has its own Cable TV, and I have a TOT Router for Internet/Wifi (that could change as I believe Fiber Optic is available in JomTien now.   If that is the case, then I would probably go with a full package, TV/Inernet/Phone.  Thank you in avance.

@Explorator en Actione The recommended packages have already been posted. One2Call is AIS.

Either one of those or the

Net Marathon MAX

  • Internet speed 15Mbps, 50GB per month
  • No FUP
  • Open a new number, top up 1200 baht and apply *777*7698# and then hit the Call key within 30 days

6 months

1150 baht

Alternatively, if you rarely use your phone, then perhaps a 29 baht package supplying 800 MB monthly may suffice. *777*9512#

For mobile internet I use a second SIM from "GOMO".

It's a no thrill online only service working in the AIS network.

About 1.5 years ago the registration for foreigners didn't work. So I let the daughter do it. Who cares. Whether this has become better?

Last package ordered in April:

110 GB volume at unlimited speed for 699. Valid one year.

For me this an out of the house use mainly. So I will probably not use up the volume before one year over.

They have 100 GB/month one year packages at limited speed.

Etc. etc.

Switch language with hamburger menu upper left.

Stop by a local 7-11.  Pick up a monthly SIM card.  Various packages available starting with a basic 49 baht/month.  You can recharge as often as you like.

@BritManToo Yeah, that's not great. Better to go with the All Together 250 if you want unlimited any network calls.

@NoDisplayName What is a "monthly SIM card"? Which package should the OP choose?  I think the OP needed a bit more than a suggestion to buy a SIM in 7/11. That means they are locked out of buying AIS.
