No stags or MGB's qualify under this new scheme, you couldn't bring one here.

I had a Stag too.  It did overheat but we fixed it.  It's vital to run the right coolant and don't let the level's drop.  It was a manual and I ruined the diff, I found a Triumph 2000 diff in the scrap yard but the bolt holes didn't fully line up.

I had a 73 Jensen Interceptor, that car didn't like being stuck in traffic, it would have fuel starvation issues.  One of those might qualify to be imported.

Jenson Interceptor. Now we are talking. One of the renovation programmes did an Interceptor.

  • I know the feeling.  I drove a 1973 MGB to/from work for 40 years,  as well as a few cross-country trips in the U.S., all totaling nearly 300,000 miles.  Could not bring it to Thailand (in 2019), so s

  • Just imagine if you had the same feelings for your old woman with as much mileage as a car 😉 or motorbike    is it possible after 20 - 30 years ?

Ticks all my boxes ✔️

Read the regulations. Any vehicle priced under 2m the import duty is assessed on 2m.

Who knows what will happen until someone tries to do it.

(The issue is rules are made my Excise Dept yet you have to deal with Customs)

Can you send a link for that?  The only posts I have seen said minimum value of 2M baht is required for permit.

The article I attached says....

The ride: It needs to be a passenger car, station wagon, or a bus with up to 10 seats. Racing cars are also on the list. (Sorry, no pickups or motorbikes.)

The age: Properly vintage – that means between 30 and 100 years old. Anything over a century is officially classed as an antique.

The import: It must be a fully assembled import with all the proper certification – not in bits.

The price tag: It needs to have a minimum value of THB 2 million.

Nail all four and you’re sorted. Miss one, and you’ll be bumped up to a steeper 50 percent tax bracket.

That looks a bit like Georgie boy in the drivers seat 😂

Classic cars have overtaken art and wine as a passion investment

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1JpbmHxdaX/

In the UK Classic Cars, Wine, Watches are exempt from Capital gains tax as assessed as "wasting assets or chattel".

I signed up to the forum to find out a bit more about this rule. Originally I thought it might be a way to get at least one of my cars over to Thailand, but the discussion confirms my doubts.

One of my cars is a 1995 Eunos Roadster, which is a bone fide classic. Where I am, its not worth 2 million, much like Stags, MGBs, Midgets, Spitfires etc.

image.jpeg.b0c0258ad96f2f841f738ae9ada0c1dd.jpeg

Its a rare model, and I even had it signed by the designer of the original Miata, the late Tom Matano (and I've had a lot of these over the years, including a rare hand built version now in an Italian collection).

image.jpeg.9c6ea2e1be4769531a0103317f8942ec.jpeg

But its never worth 2 million. And for 900,000, I can get a car already in Thailand, and have full use of it. Like this

image.jpeg.f237fba7953fc61f7323e52b4e9bce8c.jpeg

But I wouldn't pay 900,000 for one.

The other car is a 2004 XJ8, which for various reasons, wouldn't be a great idea in Thailand (the NA MX5 is mechanically simple, easy on parts, and very easy to work on), but that's for another thread.

Like many I suppose, I spend time on Thai FB Marketplace, trying to understand what is available and a sensible price (upto 250k), and I find it fairly depressing. I already have a new car in Thailand, so its just looking for a hobby car. Ironically, in the past, I've had a MB 190, a BMW E46, and these are dirt cheap in Thailand. I've had an Alfa Romeo 147, and I see the closely related 156 is available in Thailand for suspiciously sensible prices (maybe I know too much about how they eat through bushings to go for that again).

I'm suprised not more Mk1 Escort 2 door shells are being exported out of Thailand. I know most of these are basically wrecks, but Mk1 prices have gone crazy, and now you can build a new one from scratch, as long as you can get that 2-door chassis plate..... 140k for this rusty heap, but its 2-doors, not 4 doors

It isn't you that decides if it qualifies....

All of those cars meet the 2 million baht threshold. All of them are over 30 years old. One of them might not qualify on the grounds it has a MZR-Duratec motor.

You're splitting hairs, basically suggesting there shouldn't be a discussion on the policy at all. What's "...." supposed to mean? Sticky keyboard?

I suspect the officials here will determine their own value.

What that is will be up to them on the day. It will be generous if the importer is well connected and punitive if they feel like it. There is no meaningful appeal process.

I have imported a couple of 40’ containers from China, got the necessary import licenses, registered with customs for e-clearance and still had issues. They like to delay everything when your goods arrive and stuff you with expensive demurrage, 2 months on one of my containers almost doubling the cost.

It's not a useful scheme for personal import. It’s fraught with risk and you can only use the car on weekends and holidays.

If you’ve never dealt with customs here, don’t, or use a lawyer experienced in dealing with customs and expect to grease a few palms and for it to cost a lot more than expected.

If you have all your paperwork and at the last minute they say “my interpretation of the rules is this car doesn’t qualify” what are you going to do? The appeal process is to that person only.
