A multi-car collision yesterday in Phuket's Darasamutr Intersection underpass caused significant traffic chaos. The incident involved 15 vehicles, leaving one person injured with chest tightness. Authorities quickly responded, leading rescue efforts and managing the traffic disruption that ensued.

The crash occurred at midday on September 22, prompting a swift response from Wichit Police and emergency services. The injured individual was transported to the hospital, but their injuries were confirmed as non-life-threatening. Police Colonel Somsak Thongkliang and Police Lieutenant Colonel Wutthiwat Liangbunchinda led the scene inspection, supported by traffic officers.

With 15 cars involved, the underpass remained blocked for hours, affecting connecting roads and creating long traffic delays. Authorities advised motorists to avoid the area while efforts were made to clear the crash scene. The high number of vehicles and the conditions under the underpass posed challenges in reopening the lanes promptly.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, though police indicated that wet road conditions may have played a role. Evidence of substantial front and rear-end damage suggested a chain-reaction effect. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with vehicles bumper-to-bumper and police actively redirecting traffic.

Despite the congestion, police have confirmed that all vehicles have been removed and normal traffic flow has resumed. However, motorists are urged to drive carefully in underpasses and tunnels, where visibility and stopping distances can be compromised. The Darasamutr underpass, a vital route in Phuket, often experiences congestion, and authorities are currently reviewing safety measures to prevent future accidents.

Key Takeaways

  • A 15-vehicle crash in Phuket's underpass left one injured.
  • Wet conditions may have contributed to the chain-collision.
  • Police are assessing safety improvements in the affected area.

Wet road?

Well, it's rain season, don't you know?

15 cars , meaning 14 cars  driving to close to another like usual.

I have always been suprised that there are so few multi-vehicle RTAs here in Thailand given the high speeds, tailgating and lack of spatial awareness.

The 'chest tightness' was, to me, the result of a driver impacting his steering wheel.

Anywhere else, have at it.

15 vehicles and only one injury?

C'mon.

Only 15, good luck it wasn’t the rush hour.

And that no motorbikes were involved.

"50" kph speed limit..  surley everyone was beying that posted limit .... yeah right !

single lane with concrete barriers   so ?   the roadway does not appear to be wet in the photo...   so ???

I got it, !!!      the white p/u in the lead was probably driving @ 30 kph  and the "possibly" overloaded covered truck driving behind it had a severe case of "Tunnel Vision" and "me first" syndrome  so the driver  thought they could squeeze by on the right between the yellow line and the barrier !

Not allowed in the underpass.  Although they do use it sometimes.

They do it quite often at that one.

We use the one in Chalong quiet a lot, a fair few motorbikes go through there, Some days there is not enough lighting down there,

No shhhhh.... Sherlock !!!...

Might the cause have been cars driving too close to each other in the wet ?? - just throwing that 'wild guess' out there !!!  :whistling:

I thought I was going to be in 'one of these' (pileups yesterday)...

Without any indication or notification of indenting to slow, the car in-front just pulled to the left and slammed on their brakes.

No space for me to go around them as motorcycles were coming in the opposite direction, had to stop quickly.

The car behind was quite close - I was thankful they were alert enough to brake in time.

One wrong moment of distraction, looking at their phone, their latest nostril hair etc... and thats it... Collision.

I'm impressed the car following that didn't hit.

It wasn't wet - I'm guessing thats the only saving grace avoiding incident then.

While that may be true, if everyone kept to the recommended following distances, traffic would literally never move at many places.

They where obviously tailgating as they like to do in Thailand.
