UK digital ID cards - how would it affect expats in Thailand?

Not quite.  Depending on jurisdiction  the law says it is illegal to discriminate on certain grounds eg sex, religion etc.

You can find the full list here:

https://www.gov.uk/discrimination-your-rights

Nowhere in UK law is discrimination on the grounds of what country you choose to live in illegal.

Discrimination is unlawful. You try discriminating against some one who is from a different country and see what happens.

Not all, as per my previous post.

Agreed, nationality is on the list linked to.

Where they choose to stay isn't on the list.

ID cards will not reduce illegal immigration. If an ID card is essential they can and will be obtained from the dark web. I don't agree with that but there will always be a way to defraud the system if that is the intention.

I can't believe the BS that the Government are trotting out to justify this. It will protect out boarders and stop illegal immigration. You mean like a passport should.

It will stop illegal migrants from working. What dumb ass came up with that one? At the moment every new employee has to show their passport, if they have one, to show their right to work. So why are so many illegal immigrants able to find work. Because some employers are acting illegally not doing checks and knowingly employing illegals. How the f*** does digital ID get around that one?

Why? Nothing wrong as long a one knows which country is indexed and which isn't.  While everyone is free to move to an indexed country.

But better I stop talking about this, IMO there is no discrimination while I am painfully aware of the devastating inflation we have had for the past couple of years.

With which countries (a list?) does the UK have Pension Portability Agreements with?

It will do nothing but allow the government to spy and ultimately control you

Israel, the last place on Earth I would want to go to. Japan would be nice but I think immigration might be a bit difficult.

Turkey looks doable.....Lira crashing, easy for access for Brits, lot of English spoken!!!

It won’t affect pensioners only working age

Anyone  who  has paid in should be able to enjoy the benefit wherever they like. NI was not an option and there was no contract.

So guys, I share the frustration of having pension uplifts withheld because of the absence of a SS agreement with the jurisdiction we are in but surely isn't our real issue how to get the new ID issued to us so we can see how to avoid draconian pitfalls that it may lead to?

Does anyone know whether two tier kier plans to have a process for the issue of digital ID cards to foreign nationals in the way a system is in place for the replacement of passports anywhere in the world? Do we have to apply for a card next time we visit? Might it be done on line? Don't we just start by logging our finger prints in Europe & the UK as we have been doing here for a long time. There can't be much new about facial recognition for someone holding a passport can there?

I agree that AI is bound to change the landscape regarding online info and bank accounts but I can't think of a government system that has properly delivered what it was implemented to achieve.

You really could not make this up its 1984 running a bit late. All the surveillance cameras, online tracking and now the proposed digital ID, is just another step down the road of total control of your life. They know everything and you cannot query it, the system says and thats it. We in Thailand, provided you do say anything detrimental about the King, Royal Family and the Government you can say and do pretty much what you like, we have more freedoms here that in the UK, The UK would of course dispute that but its true, the freedoms we once had in the UK have been eroded over time by politicians who want total control in the name of democracy, can't imagine why I left.

Many countries have ID cards, even Thailand and the U.S.A., has it been a problem for them, never heard of one.

With all the foreign folk trying to get into the UK, it seems a good idea, no ID, out you go, or something like that....🤭

Based on what I've heard in the US they have State issued ID cards which are accepted and required by everyone.

If for some reason the Federal Government mandated that everyone must have a central government issues ID apparently this would be a big election issue, they would not have it. No idea why.

With this government they'd get issued with a card on arrival.

Every British person already has a NI (national insurance) number

there is no reason for this Digital ID card scheme.

...edit (except a nefarious reason)

of the things the AI does is sift any social media on the person and look at their bank accounts worldwide. The AI then notifies a tax inspector of unusual detections, such as a Facebook feed centred around Pattaya or large cash movements abroad. The data being processed far exceeds anything a human could perform.

You think people use their real names in social media?

They will soon force 'Real ID'  to use the internet, government services, banking and everything else under the sun.

All of which can then easily be cut off, if you don't toe their line.

Even China haven't managed to enforce Id for internet tracking.

Where?

Not a problem in Asia.

All this talk of digital ID is just a back door way of introducing national ID cards AKA Tony Blair's wet dream.

Legal immigrants already have one through the e-visa system (formerly Biometric residence permit) and have to provide biometric data for such; photo and fingerprints. Same for asylum seekers.

As for the UK state pension and uplift payments, I won't get mine for 20 years. We'll likely be living in a cashless society by then with all payments digitally tracked so no way to circumvent the system 🙃

Then perhaps the card will have their NI number on it to show police, or someone just arrived on a beach.

Do you have a card driving licence, if you have, just throw it away, you probably don't like having it.

It sounds like you have something to hide and don't want an ID card..............:ninja:.............😂

It would be against the law to have a UK driving license while living in another country.

UK DL is only for UK residents.

If you've kept a UK DL you're on the fiddle ...............

Doesn't everyone has something to hide..that's why we have curtains , locks on doors and (mostly)  don't walk around naked

or disclose our full identities on internet forums..for example.

You know its a concept called privacy...I want to protect my privacy as much as possible but it seems big brother governments have other ideas.

So no I don't want a Digital ID  and for certain no digital CBDC's  with Ai spy cameras everywhere to enforce social compliance..but it seems I'm in the minority...'think of the children' and '

it's so convenient' you luddite is the prevailing chorus for now..I hope and wish that will change and fast  or we will all be stuck in the digital panopticon with no escape.
