There's been big news over the past few months of Bangkok Bank accounts being closed down for foreigners in the Pattaya area. Seems to be happening still, apparently because their phone number linked to their bank account hasn't been registered in their name and also for people who aren't on long-term visas over 1 year.

My question are:

1. Has it only been Bangkok Bank closing down foreigners bank accounts?

2. Have any of you had your bank accounts closed down with other banks and if so, what reason did they give you for closing down your bank account?

3. Did your open your bank account in Pattaya or another province?

I've also included a Poll to this thread.

I think the issue here is the bank sees account inactivity, I'm assuming it's inactive due to the foreigners in their home country/not in Thailand.

I haven't heard of issues from expats living in Thailand

Which banks were these accounts with that have been temporarily frozen for foreigners?

It all apparently started with some Bangkok Bank employees opening up many accounts for some Chinese people who ended up defrauding some people, running those funds though those accounts and withdrawing those funds then fleeing back to China. Since then there's been a crackdown on foreigners who hold bank accounts, with many foreigners getting their accounts closed down. Not sure if it's only a Bangkok Bank thing and/or only accounts opened in Pattaya?

There's dormant (inactive) and closed, two different things. Closed is when the balance goes close to zero or below 500THB due fees etc whereas dormant can be reactivated.

If you opened your bank account years ago when on a tourist visa, your account will be frozen until you provide the bank with an updated, non-tourist type visa.

If your mobile phone app is on a phone whose SIM card was bought under a name different (Bob instead of Robert, Ed rather than Edward) from your Passport name (your visa name). In that case, your account will be frozen until you first go to your phone provider, change the name to match your passport, get a letter from the SIM provider, and take that to the bank to unlock your account.

A pain in the butt, but collars and cuffs have to match.

Have friends at work that got their salary account at bangkok bank frozen.

They have to show Thai driving license now.

No, everything is fine. Bangkok Bank asked for my photos a few years ago and I gave them, no problem.

This could be a precursor to another round of visa crack downs though. It seems the bank does not want any liability for money laundering or visa fraud. We will see.

Dormant is as dormant does! 😭. Bank will decide what is closed, not your Funken n Wagnells.

Just complaining because he is worried about his visa.

This is all old news at this point as its been in the news and on forums repeatedly. I guess some are coming to the party late on this issue.

BOT at the beginning of the year started to finally act on mule and scammer accounts by asking to have face recognition set up. As a follow on to verify account validity by matching account phone and names to sim cards. The 3rd level has been to scrutinize "suspicious" accounts, whatever that means and freeze them until account info is verified.

The number of accounts set up by agents for under the table permission to stay stamp services has also been pulled into the mess especially at one of the big name banks, although all banks are upping their security on banking information.

This isn't just for BKK, Pattaya or Phuket but country wide. Some innocent people have gotten caught up in the process but most have been easily cleared although the rumor mill has made this a bigger problem than reality in my opinion.

Only for Bangkok Bank or every bank is implementing this? I have a Kbank account opened up in Bangkok 12 years ago on an ED visa and a Krungsri account opened up in Pattaya 7 years ago on a METV. My SIM is registered in my name which matches my passport and bank account name.

Do the banks consider a work permit to be a long-stay visa of 12 months or over?

I have a Bangkok Bank account for 20+ years, never had a problem.

But.... since I'm physically not living in Thailand now (I live/work in Laos and Myanmar), I'm making minimal use of my Bangkok Bank account because I don't want $$ to be frozen and an invitation to visit the bank in person - which obviously I can't do.

I'm mainly using my Lao bank, UK bank accounts and $$ under the bed in Myanmar....

So people with tourist visas, DTV, ED visa, Elite visa were all fine and had their accounts unfrozen if they got caught up in the process? It wasn't a crackdown to close bank accounts of all foreigners with shorter stay visas?

Sorry, I'm just relaying info given to me. Third hand at best. I really don't have accurate, up-to-date information. But I suppose easy enough to find out before it surprises you.

No, you can get a work permit on a single non-B entry

No it isn't a crack down on just foreigners and if you provide whatever information that's missing they unfreeze the accounts as far as I know and have heard.

Im not sure about your question about closing accounts for those permissions of stay categories.  Freezing account isnt closing them.

For those who do not live full time in Thailand, time to drop the banks and start using Paypal or bank transfers from abroad to pay the bills. I would be cautious and not send in to much money in the Thai bank account that is no longer reliable for honest foreign customers.

Personally I think a mod should either close this or rename the subject as I don't believe any accounts have been 'closed' but temporarily frozen as many previous posters have said.......

OP even states this in a later post but leaving the title up as it is could be considered scaremongering.......

My first trip was in 2004. I was 47.  I immediately was enthrall with the place. I immediately started planning to be able to retire there or at least spend a lot of time every year there when I turned 50.  I have been 15 times over the years.  I never was comfortable with moving any significant monies to Thailand while I was on the sidelines and still working but vacationing in Thailand.  Over the years I have read of so many various issues about monies there, transfers there, transfers out of there, etc.  Some things seem to have gotten easier, more have gotten harder.  Starting with the USA and other embassies stopping the Visa affidavit income letter.  USA having to file FINCEN, my job requiring me to report foreign assets should I deposit visa baht there, or even open a bank account.  Using or not using a bank website, using or not using a phone app.  As I get older I prefer to keep things simple an on auto.  Thailand doesn't seem to be doing that.

No, I'm with Bangkok Bank. Account opened in Pattaya.

... because it isn't an option in your poll.

Aren't accounts owned by those on tourist or DTV visas going to get closed?

A friend of mine had his long-standing BBL account frozen for a couple of weeks.
