Stop your bike and the dogs will stop chasing you.

When you're trying to cover 30km before the sun gets too hot, stopping every 100 metres for some idiotic dogs is not very practical.

And WHY TF should you have to in the first place?

If you're going to own a dog, you have to own the problems it causes.

Must be fenced in.

Must be locked indoors overnight and never left outside. This is vital.

Barking must be immediately dealt with.

When outside the property must always be on a lead.

Problem dogs is always the owners issue.

If your dog doesn't cause a nuisance, it won't be poisoned.

And the defecating and urinating.

Like I said earlier; I thought it would be nice to cycle around Thailand (instead of using buses) but I found out really quickly that it wasn't nice at all. The dogs would see me coming and crouch down at the best angle to run at me full speed. They obviously do it all the time. It was scary and stressful because the only solution I had was to go as fast as possible, while swiping at them with bamboo, which removed any pleasure from the experience.

In other countries you don’t see packs of dogs, people keep their dog at home. Build fences as every normal person does. For the strays outside, call Soi Dog. They are a pest these soi dogs, and frighten people. Make walking dogs outside on a lead a legal issue. Do it, or be fined and dog taken away.

You might try bringing treats and offering them to the dogs. Becoming friends with as many of these dogs as possible will reduce their aggression towards others. It always worked when I did back in the states. many dogs in this country have never seen affection or love, so all they know is to be a dog.

I've done this for so many years I've come to recognize their charge pattern. You see their head start to bob up and down in unison with your pedal cycles, and that's when the air gun comes out. For most of them, it only takes once and they recognize me as a cyclist to leave alone. There are a few slow learners out there, but eventually they all get it.

I have thought about that since then, but I wasn't on a 'make friends with dogs' tour.

Where I live, the dogs are relaxed and I've never been chased by dogs in the UK or France, so I suspect it's something to do with the people who live in that area.

I've thought about that but REFUSE to pay a "road tax" because this country won't address their soi dog problem.

In western countries. dogs are treated much better and people don't get away with mistreatment of killing animals like they do here. You kill one dog you can go to jail. You will be fined and have a record. They investigate more and don't turn a deaf ear when you complain about these types of things. There's a Rottweiler that stays at my house a lot, who tears into other male dogs like a demon, but he's completely subservient to me, as I've always treated him well. I do reprimand him when he tries to bully the other dogs, but I understand it because he's the one who keeps other males away from here.

It's not going to change anytime soon, if at all, so that's why I offered a different approach. You can't avoid dogs here unless you stay indoors, and making as many of them as your friends goes a long way towards them not only being good towards you, but to others they encounter after. A few treats goes a long way. Dogs have good memories, and if everyone treats them bad, what recourse do they have?

Soi dog foundations spays ans neuters animals, along with inoculating and adopting some out. If the government supported them, instead of the going by only donations and did this countrywide, it would go a long way towards fixing this problem.

It is not enough. A total mindset change is required. The poisoning is terrible but understanding to a degree. They are typically a fkn menace, recreational barking and biting kids etc. If the donkey authorities and naive animistic culture would reign in the soil dog and errant monkey issue, it would not happen. Believe a 2000 baht fine is in place for feeding wild animals but never enforced. Nothing smacks of 3rd world more than packs of feral dogs roaming the streets, no matter how cute and 'humane' the numpties deem it.

True, but there's only so much anyone can do here. At least Soi Dog's trying, but it's still the responsibility of the government to help it's citizens. Also true is a country is judged on how they treat their children and animals.

It's against the law to kill dogs, but is it enforced? Obviously not. I told the local village head about the poisonings here, and everyone in the village knows it's happening, but nothing's being done, even after I pointed out a suspect to him and the Friends of Animals website. They told me if I had proof they could do something, and even if I did there would likely be nothing done, as this is Thailand. Their words.

I see your point but as Happyexpat said, I'm not interested in spending money on dog food.

One of my neighbours feeds the local strays so they hang out on the stairs and seem pretty chill.

I know people who feed cats, dogs, monkeys and pigeons. I'm not going to start doing any of that but

each to their own

Give it up, and I will too. I think you are absolutely wrong, and stubborn to boot. I'm not going to persuade you with logic, so you leave me alone and I'll do the same as I happily shoot my way to pleasant cycling.

@fredwiggy Dogs I know get a LOT of affection and love....and still chase people on motorbikes. The Alpha also likes to chase cars.

Opinions eh?

Many people know to just slow down when passing through.

Just offering a way to keep you safer, especially if you're biking the same routes. I've been around dogs all my life and rarely have any trouble. as I try to befriend all of them. I know it's not always possible, as there are dogs that have been taught to be mean one way or another, and those you need to avoid. If you keep shooting them, they aren't going to act friendly. Just sayin'.

I ride exclusively around the Bhakdi Rumbhai Canal. Beautiful, very little auto traffic, lots of bikers and joggers/walkers, it's nice. I see people feeding the soi dogs there and shake my head, but those dogs leave cyclists alone. I only had one that needed to be educated and once was enough.

All the dogs here chase everything, but I'm trying to teach them to stop. I've lost a couple of very nice dogs that thought chasing cars was fun, until they got run over. The problem here is also that people drive too fast in villages, where dogs are constantly crossing roads. and where you should drive slower. People make their own problems. No one can be everywhere at all times, and no matter how well some treat animals, there are always those that don't.

Feral means either gone wild or is wild, meaning living outdoors. I've hunted many times and seen feral dogs in a few states. Dogs no one owned that ran deer down, along with other animals, to survive. The same happens here, with millions of dogs breeding and running loose, all because the original dogs were not spayed or neutered, which was on the owners.

There was a plan by Thaksin to implement taxes. Every owner of a dog was to pay 100 Baht/year.

But unfortunately.....only a plan.

dogs like chasing bikes.

People need to learn to be responsible for themselves. If there are dogs around, then they should learn how to deal with dogs, preferably without hurting them.

Some people prefer to hate than to love. Love is too difficult. For some, it's easier to love than to hate.

Hateful people miss out on a lot of life experience, as they tend to imagine the worst.

Oh right, you're down there. I stayed in Trat for a few months and used to cycle around Sa Sisiat lake. They were just starting to build a cycle track around it but I thought it was perfectly ok without the cycle track.

Where I live the city's on one side and there's a lot of farmland on the other side. In the last 3 years I've only made one dog bark, because I came round the corner a bit fast and surprised it.

It's not easy showing love when there's three dogs chasing after you and trying to bite your ankles.

Your comment reminds me of those women who said they'd rather be in the woods with a bear than a man.

Try showing love to a bear when your head's in it's mouth. See where that gets you.

Seems like somebody on this forum has the mental age of a toddler.

Apparently they just put a thumbs down on all my comments.

Guess I'm done here for another year.

I always think, I'll give it another shot, but then I always come up against bitter, childish people on here.

I thought you were all living in the land of smiles. You'd never know it from some of the posts on here.

Come on.

Don't be a drama queen.

It's a thumbs down, so what.:stoner:

YeahI know I never said otherwise. Many people are totally sick and tired of the dog problem and every so often one of them snaps.

I've traveled to over 40 countries.

Thai people are the nicest, friendliest, helpful, lovely people I've ever met, saying that, some foreigners here are the nastiest, horrible, disrespectful people I've ever met.

You harm a Thai, they hold a grudge, they don't forget.

During covid I rode a bicycle daily, got chased by dogs, at times I'd give them a kick to the head, reflexes but I'd never harm a dog with a golf club, machete etc.

I lived Phetchabun for a few years, at times the girlfriends brother would catch a chicken, head off, chop up and we'd eat for dinner but I'd couldn't watch him cutting it up for cooking.
