Bangkok Launches ‘Smart Parking’ Scheme to Cut Traffic Chaos

Bangkok has unveiled a citywide “Parking Sharing” initiative that uses digital technology to pool vacant spaces from both private companies and government agencies. The project, developed in partnership between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA), is designed to ease traffic congestion and increase municipal revenue. Officials estimate the scheme could generate an additional 30 million baht annually.

The initiative expands on a Smart Parking pilot that demonstrated significant improvements in efficiency and revenue collection. Early trials included sites such as the Bang Lamphu parking building and Song Wat Road, where technology helped financial returns. Results were presented to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon by DEPA’s Passakon Prathombutr and Thanaphum Sukanjanasiri of Inflite Co. Ltd., developer of the ‘Jordsabuy’ (Easy Parking) platform.

Central to the model is the aggregation of underutilised parking spaces via a single digital platform. This approach aims to maximise existing facilities without the need for costly new infrastructure. Vacant lots from government agencies, for example, could be made available to the public on weekends and public holidays, while office spaces near large venues could serve as temporary parking during major events.

Technology plays a central role in the scheme. The pilot employed Cloud Parking POS devices, portable terminals for on-street fee collection and an AI-powered Ticketless Parking System using number plate recognition for automated access at multi-storey car parks. These tools reduced manual handling and minimised lost revenue.

DEPA emphasised that opening up spaces for broader public use will not only ease congestion but also create more convenience for residents and tourists. The plan is part of Bangkok’s wider smart-city strategy, integrating digital systems into urban management. Officials say full-scale rollout of the Parking Sharing scheme will bring lasting benefits in both mobility and revenue generation.

Key Takeaways

• Bangkok is expanding its Smart Parking pilot into a citywide Parking Sharing scheme to cut congestion and raise revenue.

• The model aggregates unused spaces from government and private car parks through a central digital platform.

• AI ticketless systems and portable payment devices have already reduced financial leakage and improved efficiency.

Don't built everything full with buildings but make leveled parkinggarages too. It is almost impossible to park anywhere in Bangkok or in big cities as every inch of ground is being used for an office or shop and people are not used to walk a few meters...

And indeed let the drivers pay for parking time... It will reduce traffic, less air pollution and the government will make money.. In other countries it is the same.

And fine people who claim parking space by putting chairs. pilons, or motorcycles on the public road.. If they want that parking place they can ask the Government and they have to pay for it every month/year...If they do it illegally fine them not with 300 THB but with 5k or so

creating car parking will encourage traffic, what you need to do is discourage, as other cities, e.g. london has the ulez, and improve public transport options and efficiency.

In a place like NYC, only the rich can drive

I've tried a couple of park and ride places, both times it worked out significantly quicker to drive into the centre myself.

Near where I live they have just constructed an apartment village complex.

14 separate buildings each 5 floors with 9 rooms each floor.

Outside each building is allocated 9 car parking spaces..

That's going to be interesting in the mornings sorting out all the double/triple parking.

"Smart Parking", won't work - people are not smart

then they will launch:

"Transparent Parking, won't work - people are not transparent

then they will launch:

"AI parking", will work - people not necessary

I avoid driving into Bangkok except when going to the office, where there is sufficient space.

Shopping on the outskirts is better. There are also so many places to eat outside the center.

A drive to Nakhon Pathom (30 minutes) for lunch on Sundays is excellent.

Just a spin-off from a scheme intended to ease traffic congestion. How lucky can you get?😋

in the old days ..    like 1980's-you could drive into NYC from Bklyn or Queens and take the midtown tunnel for 25 cent toll

then park on the street for free and go to Madison Sq Garden to watch the Rangers

now the toll is $9.00 "if" you use an E-Z Pass  and forget about the street parking.    a garage will cost you at least $25

then you have t wait until your car is retrieved ,,,

Beer was $1.00 back then .  now it's $16.11    a freaking hot dog that was  25 cents in the street is now $9.20 at a game

..  and the Rangers still suck  .( except  1994 ) I was there for the Stanley Cup win !
