A seven-seater SUV carrying 28 undocumented migrants crashed in Kanchanaburi in the early hours of 29 September after attempting to speed through a police checkpoint. The driver fled during the chaos, leaving the passengers behind. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Officials, led by district authorities and security forces in Thong Pha Phum, had set up a checkpoint near Wat Khuean Vajiralongkorn to intercept smuggling operations. At 01.30 officers signalled an approaching Isuzu MU-7 with Kanchanaburi plates to slow down. The vehicle ignored the signal and accelerated, prompting a pursuit.

The SUV collided with a car and motorcycle travelling nearby. The car swerved into a roadside ditch, while the motorcycle was struck and overturned, though the rider managed to escape unharmed. The fleeing SUV driver then lost control, overturning into a drainage channel and sustaining damage.

In the confusion, the driver escaped into the darkness using knowledge of the area, while 28 migrants, 19 men and 9 women, emerged from the wreck and were detained. They had entered Thailand illegally through natural border routes near Sangkhla Buri before travelling by boat across Vajiralongkorn Dam. At Ban Tha Phae, they got in the waiting SUV.

The migrants said they had each paid brokers between 18,000 and 20,000 baht depending on their destination, which included Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram and Chachoengsao. They were handed over to police for further questioning and legal action under immigration law. The damaged vehicle was impounded for inspection and efforts are under way to identify the driver.

29, is that a record?

Do we need to give Norris a call?

Good grief, twenty nine stuffed in a mu7 like a can of mackerel fish and it was the accident that probably saved their lives before losing breath.

Only 28? Did 2 run away?

  • 4 weeks later...

You have to feel for the Burmese, their junta military making their lives impossible to feed themselves and their families yet Thailand continues to support the Junta as does China & India. What a world we live in with so many <deleted> people of which many are in places of power & authority!
