Your credibility is zero.

October 5, 2025Oct 5 Skipping to the end: except for Nimman, CM lacks expat ghettos whereas Bangkok is teaming with multiple Expat areas my social life is 10 times better than when I lived in Chiang Mai.

October 5, 2025Oct 5 …..And Nimman, CM has a lot of Chinese expats. And worse, Canadians. The OP will miss the free wheeling banter of Pattaya and should stay in his lane.
October 10, 2025Oct 10 A lot live there coz they are poor. They then try to cover up their poverty by saying they live there because its so much better than Bangkok or Pattya, and so are the people. No better, no different.

I thought Chiang Mai would be more expensive than Pattaya ? Is it cheaper for rents , food ,and pay4play?

Would you agree CM has a robust ,interesting friendly bunch of expats ? Do you honestly think a city can change a bunch of moron expats? More likely the city might change...

But it can still be better than many places, so still a good choice. Depends what you want will influence your destination... Pattaya/Bangkok/Samui etc. are great to visit but will eventually send you nuts unless you live just outside of them so can visit when you want to (even if just weekends). If you want quiet and peaceful, then places like Korat/Khon kaen would be okay... but CM is pretty cool and lots of expats choose it. Do your research and visit these places to see which ones takes your fancy. He asked if the expat community was friendly. Not about tourist attractions. The expats there will say hi. Maybe give some chitchat. But same as all Thailand. Most expats are not very social in making friends. Acquaintances at best. You can easily find a place to sit and have a beer and talk to some foreigners. They will not refuse you usually.
October 11, 2025Oct 11 Seems to me after ten years the difficulty is accurate. Starting converstions with a tourist is easy here.

They will not refuse you usually. The topics of conversation are lacking, however. It works if you like to hear people talk. They tend to be the same conversations each time. Instead of the conversation growing into more meaningful topics I have found that people at the bar prefer to move on to someone else and have the same superficial conversation. In other words, they don't want depth, rather just a greeting and superficial exchange. Do you have any theories as to why deeper friendships seem to not evolve very often there? I used to think it was because people were very nomadic moving around, but that does not relate to longer term expats.

I believe people have changed, become more selfish and more untrustworthy Do people "value" friendships anymore ? How many times have you done favours for "friends" only for them not to help you

It's more like just toasting the town and acting like I'm having fun while drinking. Sometimes I will get a whiner who talks about a lot of problems, but it tends to be a much older guy and I put it down to old age. It just seems odd that it's only that when we are talking about people in late middle age.

It's possible that's why many expats don't want to know other expats because of fear of asked to do favours Borrowing money ,lending their car , asked to drive them to the airport etc

Are you actually getting guys directly asking you for favors often? Are they older, younger or the same age as you? In my experience I can see scam type stuff that does not go far, but not outright requests.

You'd be better off to stay in Mopland Oz. But Have fun up there and do send us those postcards of joy. Pattaya is better for sexpats but Chiang Mai has better beaches.
October 12, 2025Oct 12 Popular Post I have lived in Chiang Mai for 36 years. I have always spent most of my time with Thais. I did not move to Thailand to be around Farangs. I have always found plenty of things to do to occupy my time without looking for, or needing, foreign friends. I am 78 years old and have never felt the need to belong to a club. Life is good and I am happy that I live where I do.
