Thailand's National Security Council (NSC) has approved plans to construct fences along the Thai-Cambodian border, as announced by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The Thai military will finalize the details, including location and design, based on local needs and terrain. This move is part of a broader strategy to manage border disputes and improve security.

Amidst issues of Cambodian encroachment in Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaeo, Anutin emphasized a balance between legal actions and humanitarian considerations. The Royal Thai Armed Forces will evaluate which legal frameworks, including martial law or immigration law, should apply to these situations. Ongoing negotiations with Cambodia are taking place under the General Border Committee (GBC), aiming to resolve territorial disputes.

Thailand has set specific conditions for Cambodia, emphasizing security measures such as ordnance clearance and withdrawal of heavy weapons. Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow highlighted these agreements, stating discussions are ongoing, with international assistance from countries like Norway anticipated. Cambodia must meet these conditions for a cooperative relationship, as stated by Anutin.

Further diplomatic and military measures were endorsed to alleviate Thai-Cambodian tensions, continuing previous NSC strategies. This includes trade controls and diplomatic efforts on an international level. The Thai government rebuffed a New York Times report suggesting Chinese military supplies were involved in recent Thai-Cambodian tensions, clarifying that the mentioned arms delivery occurred before any conflicts.

Looking forward, both countries continue to engage in dialogue under the GBC framework, focusing on enhancing border security and bilateral cooperation. Thailand remains firm on its conditions for reopening border checkpoints, stressing a commitment to ensuring regional peace and stability.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand approves border fences to address security concerns.
  • Diplomatic talks with Cambodia focus on disarmament and cooperation.
  • Previous international reports on military tensions are disputed.

Yes, what with Africans, Arabs, Palestinians, Indians, Chinese, Mexicans and now Cambodians I don't know what the world is coming to. There were certainly none of those people about when I was a child some 70 years ago. It's just been all downhill.

Yep I agree......Thailand needs to build a a wall to keep the Chinese,Russians, Nigerians out and especially the Indians out.....

But seriously folks.....This wall building will be the biggest hog fest of gluttony and contractor pocket stuffing that Thailand has seen in a long time...

And the wall will achieve absolutely nothing...

In the history of humankind, has building a border wall ever been a successful solution to a border issue?

Great Wall of China.

  • Popular Post

I've walked on the great wall of China for several hundred meters.

I was surprised at how good the condition of the wall and the walking surface is and how wide it is.

That section is up quite high, I was on a small group tour, we took a small simple spiral train in tiny 1 person carriages to get to the top.

Experience of a lifetime. 99% of the visitors were Chinese. Many asked me and the couple of other farang to be in their group / family photos. And many offered to use my camera to take photos of me, many times so that long expanses of the curving wall could be seen in the background.

Two hour trip, to that section of the wall, in a modrn very clean mini van, careful driver, tour guide was a pleasant lady history teacher, perhaps 35 years old, perfect English, from a uni in Beijing and she had well prepared handouts.

Stopped for a good meal (with hamburgers on the menu) at a nice modern clean restaurant, menu is Chinese, Korean, Japanese and English. Great coffee.

Not the great wall: "Genghis Khan and his armies had no trouble invading Chinese territory, for example, nor did various other tribes from the north. In some cases, the invaders may have simply gone around sections of the wall....in 1644, the Ming dynasty was betrayed to invading Manchu forces by a turncoat general who simply let the enemy army in through a gate." Great wall not all that great.... discover mag article

Bridges not walls are required, but that needs leaders.

Read elsewhere it will be made from concrete posts and 5 rows of wire, just a paddock fence

The best part is 6,500,000 baht to lay 5 kilometers of this fence

I need to get shares in the company doing this job :shock1:

Does this mean the two countries have actually agreed a definitive border line?

Only building fences, because bridges would be too challenging?

AI generated picture on Facebook of the Great Wall of Thailand along the northern border with Cambodia.

IMO what a monstrosity crucifying the scenic views for tourists!

Ideal for anti-Thai graffiti.

The one I built around the house and garden seems to have kept any prospective invaders at bay for the past 20+ years.   So the answer is yes
