Former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and his wife, Yaowapha Wongsawat, visited Thaksin Shinawatra at Klong Prem Central Prison on the morning of October 6 to offer moral support as he awaits a royal clemency decision. The visit marked the seventh time Thaksin has received family visitors since the Supreme Court ordered his return to prison on September 9 to serve a one-year sentence.

Somchai, who is Thaksin’s brother-in-law and also a former prime minister, arrived with Yaowapha, Thaksin’s younger sister and Thaksin’s lawyer, Winyat Chartmontree. The couple spent about 20 minutes with Thaksin before departing. Thaksin’s children were not present during the visit.

After meeting Thaksin, Somchai told reporters that the former leader “has resigned himself to his fate and understands that this is just a temporary stay here.” He added that Thaksin appeared to be in good spirits and that their conversation focused on encouragement and family support rather than his pending clemency plea. Yaowapha declined to comment to the media.

Winyat confirmed that Thaksin’s clemency petition remains under review by the Justice Ministry and refused to discuss the matter further, saying, “I have no comment on that, as the justice minister has the authority to review it.” The lawyer did not specify whether Thaksin would accept the decision if the plea were rejected.

This is Thaksin’s second request for royal clemency. His first petition resulted in His Majesty the King commuting his original eight-year sentence, imposed for three corruption-related convictions, to one year. Despite the reduction, Thaksin was transferred to the Police General Hospital on the night of his imprisonment on August 22, 2023 and did not spend any time in a regular prison.

The Supreme Court later ruled that because Thaksin had not served time in custody, he must return to Klong Prem Central Prison to complete the one-year sentence. As of October 6, there has been no official statement on when the royal decision regarding his clemency plea will be announced.

Yeah I vaguely remember they got divorced, and I remember some scandal about a Bangkok land  deal she was involved in , then she just seemed to disappear, I wonder what  sort of settlement he paid her?

The land was on Ratchadapisek Road, Allegedly worth billions, went for a song,

Someone tell me if I am wrong, but wasn't his sister Yaowapha really overweight in the past? Not trying to be rude to her, but I read years ago that she wasn't considered attractive enough to enter politics.

I don't want to know

In the case of this family, YES

Somchai was another Thaksin puppet prime minister who also didn't last long. Six relatives failed to last a single term.

Thaksin now looking for another puppet  amond his relatives before the next election.

Who will he con to be his fall guy next time???

I'm guessing they didn't have to wait for 5 hours like my girlfriend did when visiting her uncle...

Did they all get an internal probe ? I'll bet they didn't even get a pat down..
