Giving "loans" to other farangs

Featured Replies

I was just watching a YouTube video on how many expats lose money by lending money to other expats , many they hadnt known long .

Met them in a bar or even neighbours, meeting each other after a few weeks then apparently they bite ,asking you to lend them money because they are going through a tough time

I only had that once in all my trips and funnily enough it was at the view Talay 2B condo building where I befriended a older expat and after a few weeks he tried to bite after asking questions over the few weeks about my financial situation

George he said can I borrow 20,000 baht to pay my rent,I will get the pension on Thursday and pay you back but the landlord wants it today or he is kicking me out !!!

The hardest thing was saying NO to20k  especially as he was crying so I lent him 5k

But his true colours he was still in view talay a few weeks later and didn't talk to me and avoided me I didn't get my 5k back

My question to you is have you ever been "bitten " for loans of money ?

And please may I only get answers regarding farang expats only ,not Thai people asking you !!!

Is there expats you know who do this full time,? Bludging for money ?

Do they pay you back ,I mean there must be genuine ones ,how do you say NO ?

What if they are crying ?

You can't go through life like this.

You may need other company sometimes rather than avoiding everyone and sitting by yourself especially if you retire to say Pattaya

Not everyone will bite for money so you can't avoid everyone just in case

You are so true Sir. No ego issues with the Thais and they have no problem to have a laugh at any silly joke and have fun and not take themselves to seriously as many foreigners unfortunately manifest in Thailand.

With that in mind, I would also apply common sense and a bit of caution on not flaunting wealth around any Thais neither. As jealousy and friendship can very closely interact.

I fully agree with you Sir, Fully. But it's always that one troublemaker who can be somewhere behind that can call for the need to apply basic caution. Of course not all people are bad, be it here, there, or beyond the seven seas !! But one needs to keep at bay in Thailand as you really don't know with who you can end up. It's always the same story...if you have nothing, live in very humble dwellings, you have less to loose and less to wory about. If in the other way say you can afford a bit more, then elementary caution would be sensible...but that's plainly my humble opinion and no offense. Thank you so much.

So you will fall for any petty con trying to extract money from you and you also like to make gay solicitations to other AN members. Is there anything else we should know about you?

Tell him you don't have the money, unless it's a good friend you can trust or you have sympathy for the guy and don't expect the money back.

Only loan someone what you can afford to lose.

I can't imagine giving anyone a loan here.  I have never been asked either. If someone did ask me I would just laugh.

Best answer when someone asks to borrow money: "I'm not a bank."

Agree, 100%.

Hanging around with these guys will bring you down.

Asking for Collateral to guarantee the 'loan' usually nips the crying in the bud.

Hand over something valuable, such as a phone, tablet, notebook, or passport.

This is a popular thread starter here so if the OP wants more experience, a simple search would yield them.

Many years ago I was out drinking with a couple of mates.

Over the years my mates would talk about their friend, always asking to borrow money but rarely pay it back.

This guy showed up at the bar that night, we got talking, my friends went home, my new friend ask to borrow money.

I finished my beer and went home.

Nothing to do with having a good heart. It just makes life better.

You've been around here long enough to have seen the old foreigners who are bald on top and sporting a pony tail. Probably with fresh tattoos roaring around on MB.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
