Are you a cheap Charlie?

Featured Replies

Whenever you go out, are you the guy who orders 2 slices of bread, a bowl of soup and a glass of tap water - or are you the guy who rolls up in a swanky car and orders the most expensive items on the menu?

I usually only eat at Michelin star restaurants when in Bangkok, and usually opt for some A5 Wagyu with a nice bottle of Sake/Vino - or something french.   If i'm roughing it - then a Sunday

If i'm roughing it - then a Sunday Roast down the irish pub and a pint of Magners will suffice..

Which Irish pub

I only order what I can eat with my fingers.

Food is important it is one of the pleasures of life. Fortunately, never in my life have I focused on the prices when I eat out.

I order what I want, as opposed to those who search for the cheapest items.

bob, these days Mrs. Smith runs the whole show when we go out. She orders, she pays, she probably even tips herself for the good effort. Out of pure gentlemanly courtesy, I let her do the ordering for me. I just tell her no sausage, because that’s your department, not mine. She’s fine with it, of course. That’s just how I roll. You know, the kind of thing a man does when he’s living the dream as a fully maintained boy-toy accessory.

Bob

Babs back and i cannot say better then ever as it is all repetitive crap as usual.

More like 'thrifty' and prefer 'value for THB'.

Eat whatever I want or in the mood for, though venue may be different and priced much lower.   I have a hard time spending >500 THB for a meal.   In TH, really don't need to, as hard for me to eat 2 plates/bowls of food in the 200 TBH range each.

The real rich are rich because they refuse to be scammed and will not pay the over inflated rates in a country like Thailand. In the first place, anybody who is really rich, will for sure be in another country now, rather then in Thailand.

What the heck are you talking about? Makes no sense at all.

A few points to ponder.

Up to you to abide or not. If you are drunk, kindly read when sober. Thanks. 😂🙏

Quite a few people flaunting their cash in Thailand not because they are rich, but mainly due to the difference in the exchange rate. Thats quite obvious.

Next is trying to pose as a big shot in a restaurant that to in Thailand. This is subconsciously just to get validity and approuval from the waiter and people around.

Observe in those swanky restaurants that overcharge, how sometimes the staff can be snooty and pull a long face,  if you do not order something expensive. Happens a lot in Europe and in Thailand in the foreign run establishments. (top ranking restaurants in Hotels or brands).

They are just trying to make the customer uncomfortable. An unconfortable customer who has a weak character will usually then try to "upgrade" in ordering an expensive bottle or leaving a huge tip. It's pure psychology and they are usually briefed maybe.

Don't consider yourself worthless. If you do not want to spend an arm and a leg on some absurd dishes or wine, do not. No need to pose and act richer then you are be it in Thailand or elsewhere. If you don't like a dish in a post restaurant, complain. Don't say yes-yes just because of the snobby surroundings.

You are the client and you are worth much more then what the snooty broke waiter(ess) or staff thinks of you or others around.

If you just want to order a piece of bread, a soup and water, that is  fine - it could even be more healthy at your age then some fat, oily, staturated grease food or overcharged cholesterol bearing meats.

Don't be like those say in the UK coal mining cities who remove their overalls on Sunday and dress up (just a cliché here and metaphore). As it is the total opposite of what the real rich do on Sunday and choose rather to wear more simple clothes and not get noticed.

Those who are familiar with St Tropez / France (where the yachts docked in the port are no less then say 5 or 10 million for the smallest upto around 100 or 200 million for the others). Watch how the super rich dress, spend and how they walk around in flip flips, shorts and a used polo shirt. And then around them, like flies,  you have the others in their tight shirts and orange pants and white brand new nikies,  trying to pose but who are only the wanna-bees and definately not owners of a yacht or a house.

Society has divided people and the social gap increases. The UK like some ares in the USA, seem very social status conscious.

Fine. I respect that. But usually it is always those who have less that try to appear the opposite.

Keep in mind dear fellow foreigners in Thailand, that flaunting wealth no longer yields respect in today's context. It yields, anger and worse, can put you in danger and get hurt to be robbed in fact. The notion Cheap Charlie does not seem valid anymore. It's more to be a smart and wise foreigner, who does not want to get cheated in some absurd restaurant that is overcharging for re heated western food maybe.

Usually go for the biggest chunk of beef, price not considered.

Tried the Gordan Ramsey restaurants a few times in Bangkok, and out of 3 times we where satisfied once only, and that was the day after the official opening at Icon Siam, and he had personally been there the day before.

Dry-aged Rib-Eye Steak 250g to 2500,- bath disappointed us both, and we could had bought local beef for 280 baht a kg and made it better our self.

So, no more. Better experience at Kai at Silom

Am neither.

Not all farangs, and other foreigners (for example, I have some Japanese and South Korean friends here), in Thailand are rich.

Many came here with meager savings and are dependent of small home government pensions.

They came here, and other low cost countries, to retire as they believed that would have a better quality of life overseas than in their homeland.

Yes, they may be called "cheap Charlies", but they are living within their limited means.

It is a fine line between being cheap and being stupid or irresponsible.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with anyone who lives within their means.

It's the two week look at me wannabe millionaires many of whom are up to their eyeballs in debt that are the stupid ones.
