How does one know if one qualifies as a true Intellectual?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Here are a few simplistic thoughts Concerning Being and Intellectual:

a.   How would we know if we are truly an “intellectual”?

b.   What is our responsibility to Society, if we decide that we qualify as one?

c.   Might we die an early death, as a result of carrying this burden?

Also, what is the definitive definition of an Intellectual?

Here is just one definition:

“An intellectual is someone who engages in critical thinking, research, and reflection about society, and who uses their mind to work with ideas. They often deal with abstract and complex problems, analyzing them to propose solutions or new perspectives. Ultimately, their aim is to understand the world, question accepted norms, and contribute to public discourse and knowledge.”

IN ADDITION, here is one more definition which, I would say, incorporates aspects of both Searle’s and Noam’s intellectualism….

“An intellectual challenges powerful, established systems by revealing their core deceptions, whether they be technological or political. They use rigorous methods—like a philosophical thought experiment to distinguish simulation from reality, or a deep analysis of public records to expose propaganda—to dismantle the arguments that sustain these systems. Ultimately, their goal is to show that a system claiming to possess true understanding or to be acting on democratic principles is, in fact, merely an empty imitation serving a hidden agenda.”

I hope you might, if you have time today, watch these glorious presentations on Google Talks, offered up by JOHN SEARLE….(I love this one. Google Talks has deteriorated, much, since those good old days of Google Talks.  Searle outdid himself at Google…That Day, for sure…BIG TIME….!!!!!  So, please enjoy the talk, if you will.)

I have no idea how you spend your time, but I have spent most of my life wrestling with conflicting thoughts about the meaning of life, and the purpose, if any, of the Universe, and also the meaning of frogs croaking near my house during the Raining Season, among other important considerations.

Also, even though I do love Sundays, since Sundays are quieter, due to less traffic in my area, still, Sundays are never a rest day for me….My mind is always going a mile-a-minute, intellectualizing, as is my normal bent.

AND-Also, Sundays, for most TV members, provides us a respite to step back and analyse our progress, to date, about the most mundane things. For example: What might we have done wrong during the past seven days?

I love to post Topics on Sundays, too.

Manic Sundays come to us far too infrequently, IMHO…..

So…..

Have a Good One…..FOLKS…!!!!

Also, would you say that you are, at heart, nothing but another intellectual?

I do hope so, since I hate being alone…

Although, I am NEVER lonely, as long as I have my thoughts to accompany me.

Best regards,

Gamma

Important Note:  Very Sorry if being an Intellectual is just …Not your Bag…..though….

James Brown was one of the greatest intellectuals of recent times.

I FEEL GOOD......

Hope you will, too, tomorrow, Sunday morning....

I feel nice,......

Note Two:  Soul is PARADISE......on a Sunday morning.....

... this is not something you need to trouble yourself with if your Sundays are spent posting sprawling, self-congratulatory manifestos like this !!!!! Faux excentricity is massively overrated - it is

  • Who cares what you call yourself or how pretentious you want to sound. We all eat, sleep, sht, fuk, and die. Everything in between is just a blink, so don’t over-glamorize it.

  • How does one know if one qualifies as a true Intellectual?   if one can listen to Rossini's Overture to his Opera "William Tell" without thinking of The Lone Ranger?

Faux excentricity is massively overrated - it is not a mark of intelligence, especially when it’s as obviously performative as your marathon of frogs, Google Talks, and James Brown musings.

Perhaps your next urgent philosophical enquiry should include: “How does one know if one qualifies as a fruit-cake?” - though posting as above is more than enough evidence....

Yes.

But...

Do you understand Chinese?

This is THE Point of this Topic, according to John Searle.

The Chinese Room.

If one is not lined up against a wall and shot, one's claims to be an intellectual sound a little false.

Thank you for this post Gamma...

I love how you go from philosophy, to the sound of frogs, as when I feel like something else than philosophy for a while, and I listen to music, perhaps not James Brown, but frogs, yes.

I just came across some philosophers that strangely have thoughts similar to mine..

I wrote this to my son after listening to these two YT videos..

Peter Boghossian on Critical Thinking, Failing Universities, and Why Debate Matters... Excerpt: " I like thinking, I like thinking about why people believe things, I like..... about ideologies..."

"You sent

Peter Boghossian on Critical Thinking, Failing Universities, and Why Debate Matters... Excerpt: " I like thinking, I like thinking about why people believe things, I like..... about ideologies..."

And strangely, this is what I have been thinking about lately. Why is it that something that appears so clear to me as being the right thing to do, is seen by others as a real bad thing to do....".

So take a listen.....

And unfortunately, your post raised some vitriol again, from even some members that I thought were above that...

During the Chinese Cultural Revolution intellectuals were put to death. Dictators won't allow people to demand rights or question wrongs.

I recently re-watched Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine which deals with this and the restriction of the arts, notably Chinese Opera, which often questioned authority. I'd forgotten what a stunning film it is.

I dont think one needs to be an intellectual but it's nice to have broad knowledge in your armoury.

True.

And, if not at dawn....

Even more hollow, one's claims.
