Sending large amounts with Wise

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have set up wise on my phone, I have send $20 in the wise account as they have said to do.

The instructions say that to send larger amounts, I need to call them or take a selfie with my passport.

Do I need to do this every time or just the first time.

I am currently in the US, and would like to finish setting this up before I leave in 3 weeks. I would be using this to send money for the Non-O visa.

Am I overthinking this?

Thanks.

I don't have one yet, this is my first time with a retirement vise, the last 30+ years have been visa exempt, no need for an account.

I could sent it to my wifes account, but no way to check it from here.

Beware, Wise seem to be on a mission at the present time to make life for their account holders living in Thailand just as difficult as it can be - if not completely impossible. Along with quite a few others on here I have been asked for proof of my address which I was able to do with the aid of a recent bank statement. But not content with that, they then asked me for proof of my ID through an image of my passport photopage. However, the final coup de grace then came in my case with a request for proof of my right to live in Thailand - which, in practice, only appears to be possible with a Thai driving licence for some mysterious reason.

Since I don't have a Thai driving licence Wise have made it clear to me that they won't be able to verify my account with them to their satisfaction, and that they will therefore be suspending it on 24 October. Needless to say, they have now gone from hero to zero in my eyes at a stroke.

Assuming that your wife is Thai, this might, in practice, prove easier said than done in any event. The problem arises from the fact that Thai nationals' account names can only be officially recorded in Thai script, whereas it is not possible to register account names with Wise in Thai script, as the image below (courtesy of @treetops) shows. So, if you were to record her account name on Wise in the Western format instead, this would result in a mismatch between account names - and, hence, doom any Wise transfer which you attempted to make to her account to failure, in all probability.

Thai nationals' account names usually have the names recorded in BOTH Thai and Latin script. Some clerks seem to be sloppy with recording the Latin spelling exactly as shown on the Thai ID card. I've seen quite a few examples of that when making DOMESTIC transfers from my Kasikorn Bank app, as I get to see both the Thai script version and the Latin script version of the recipient's name in the email confirmations I receive after each funds transfer.

That can cause an issue if there's a mismatch between the name the Thai bank has recorded and the name you enter for the recipient with Wise. There's no need for them to support Thai script. SWIFT transfers don't have the recipient name in Thai script either; that in itself isn't a problem.

Set up your WISE account with an address in your western home country and you will have no problems. If you try and give an address in Thailand you will suffer all sorts of problems.

I'll take the view that you should use your actual residential address. If you use an address where you don't actually reside, you will eventually run into problems.

I will setup with the address I have on file in the US, which is my SIL house. Since we sold our house here, I moved all of my personal identification to her address. I also will be keeping my US phone number with Mint, setup with wifi calling and text, so they can call me if needed. I found the page where they would be asking for id and proof of address , I have been uploading that even though they haven't asked for that yet.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

  • 4 weeks later...

I had to change my phone number because the provider cashed and eeleted a few thousand phone numbers in my area, they cancelled my existing number and issued me another number-just like that-after 12 years having tis number.  Okay after I got over the heebie jeebies, I started changing my phone number, all but two was simple.  then I got down to Wise,  I tried to log on and of course scty code went to old number, so couldn’t log in.  Called customer service and they sent me instructions, up load either Pspt pic, N’tl ID pic, or Drivers license, holding it up below your face for comparison.  Well, I tried 14 times, different selfies, iphone, photo Booth, I think it finally took the last one I sent of a paper copy of my old passport…….still waiting.  I have some money in Wise, think I’ll just pull it out and drop the account, haven’t really used it at all.

This seems to be for those who hold a Wise account card. I have no card, and have not been asked to verify my account despite numerous transactions.

I just had to verify my address on the site, and it seems all is OK, I'll see next month, I guess. My last transfer after verifying my address came in a few hours vs. a few days before.

After several years of using Wise I was asked to verify my Thai address yesterday before they let me continue. Uploaded a bank statement PDF and 5 minutes later normal Wise service resumed for me.  Not sure what @OJAS was referring to ? Was this on subsequent attempts after already being approved with a bank statement?

Somebody in the UK is putting money into my WISE account in a weeks time , the address I had when I opened the account was Shoreditch High street London .

When I double checked my details it comes up as Clifton Street London.

Have they changed address , is something not correct ?

Thanks for pointing that out, mine has changed to the new address like you say. No notification from Wise whatsoever in my case.

I don't (or, rather, didn't) hold a Wise account card.

As I thought that I had already explained, there were 3 separate stages involved in my case, in the following order:

(1) Verification of my Thai address - satisfied through a copy of my latest UK bank statement.

(2) Verification of my ID - satisfied through a copy of my passport photopage.

(3) Verification of my right to reside in Thailand - the coup de grace for me as I don't have a Thai driving licence which, in practice, appears to be the only document acceptable to Wise for this purpose (don't ask me why!). In particular, Wise made it abundantly clear to me that annual extension of stay stamps were NOT deemed acceptable for this purpose.
